- Sonic Generations is a good game, sometimes it's even a great one. But is that enough for a rabid Sonic fan such as myself?
Just kidding, but in all seriousness, yes Sonic Generations has a fixation with the past that it just can't seem to shake itself of. Does this hurt or hamper the experience?

"Generations came out in the Boom era" no it didn't, it came out in the Meta era, the Boom era is a small sub section of the Meta era that only lasted 2 years, if that.
"Generations is generally bug less, which is great for a 3D Sonic game" 3D Sonic games are very rarely if ever buggy, the only one's you can really mention without going back to 1998 is Sonic 06 and Boom, the rest are pretty much passable in terms of glitches.

Sonic Colors was seen as a major comeback for the franchise, and Generations wasn't a desperate attempt to win back the fans they lost because Colors already did that. Generations was an anniversary game that was riding the high of popularity the series received after Colors. Colors was considered the end of the "dark age" of sonic, where the series was basically failing. Hell, the games after generations, while they faltered, were still successful.
Colors and Gens are NOT part of the Dark Age, they're the end of it, and the predecessor to what I call the "not as bad but still kinda crappy" age
I'm sorry but hearing "Sonic Mania is a better game because it manages to use these old levels to bring new gimmicks and make them original" is WAY too funny
Saying Mania introduces more new things to these old levels than Generations is CRAZY
The reason why I don't replay Mania outside of the 4 original zones is EXACTLY because it is unoriginal, the same level with the same level design as the original with some new gimmicks which are from other games, while Gens not only you have Classic and Boost Stages for games/levels which never had those gameplays in mind but also has new level design for all stages with some parts inspired by the original stages with an all new gameplay, in Mania you have the EXACT same gameplay as the old games and most of the old levels use the SAME level design, but with acts mashed togheter and a small twist on the second act
That’s BS I played the entire game and the game literally adds new stuff to the levels maybe play the entire game before basing your opinion ass hole
Plus it made an even better physics for sonic along with an amazing move for sonic
While act 1 of the levels are meant to represent how the levels originally looked like act 2 of the levels make them better and adds new gimmicks
Like do you remember chemical plant being so bouncy using the jelly or green hill in 2D having the death egg robot as the first boss along with ziplines and an underground sections and level design being based of 3K no I don’t

1) No shit, it relies on nostalgia, that's the entire point. The game is an anniversary title, celebrating the series' history, so of course they're gonna use nostalgia!
2) The game is good because of it's gameplay loop and tight level design, not because of nostalgia pandering. You even admitted in your own video that the gameplay loop is like crack. If this game weren't an anniversary title and didn't have reused stage themes, I'm sure it would still be loved.
3) Sonic Boom came out after this game, not before.
4) You're only sick of Green Hill because Sega kept reusing it in other games that came *after* this one. That's not Generations' fault. It didn't hop on the bandwagon, but rather, it's the game that all the others bandwagon off of
That's....That's the point of generations. It's an anniversary game. Being a "greatest hits" was the ENTIRE POINT. I've never seen someone misread the point of a game this tragically. I'm hoping, PRAYING that this is bait.

I'm sorry, everyone's said it to death but this is the game celebrating the 20th Anniversary, and even in the title itself it basically points out that this is a game that celebrates its past. This is one of the first times the franchise did it before SEGA started actually nostalgiabaiting with games like Forces and kind of Mania, even a little bit in Frontiers.
The way you made it sound is as if they had nothing better or original to do (which in many cases is true lol, for this too) but that's not a fault. This may have been a last resort, but it's not like the "nostalgiabait" you say is present is out of place or a problem for its time.
Games like Sonic Forces and others have that problem because they actually make it obvious that they're desperate, since Sonic Generations did pretty well and they took the wrong ideas to make for games ahead of it.
The way you compare Mania and Generations is also hella weird too, like you act like taking the best from old stuff for a game celebrating old stuff is bad while Mania did the same thing? They do have its differences but you make it sound like Generations does it miles worse. It feels like you haven't actually played the source material it bases itself on because Generations did do a lot of things different in some ways (ironically you used the Chaos Boss clip, which is arguably one of the most changed things from source material)
Some of my arguments may be faulty but I, and as you can tell everyone else in the comments, think yours are too. We can agree to disagree.
No angry mob here! I really liked your retrospective of Sonic Generations. For me I feel the opposite for these games, I won't necessarily like them but I'll still respect them for what they were trying to do. The game did feel like it had a lot of nostalgia but it's like you said they tried to make it work for a new audience too. I don't think I can ever get tired of green hill zone and I do enjoy the distinct zones in Sonic games.

I understand your comments about nostalgia pandering but using Generations was the worst example for this, i think i need to remind you the last time we saw green hill before Generations was in SA2: Sonic's 10 year anniversary game and prior to that game it was Sonic 1, people must review these games through the eyes of their time period. People liked the nostalgia pandering in this game because it was the first time they ever did that and also because Gens is a celebration of the franchise's history.

So you’re saying gens came out in the boom era? My guy it came out in 2011 when sega and sonic team were getting back on their feet, and they had already released colors and unleashed 1-3 years prior which came out 2008 - 2011 😞

Obviously this game is filled with nostalgia it’s looking back at 20 years of Sonic, taking some of the most iconic levels and stages and giving them an update while still being faithful to the original level. This game was designed to be a trip down memory lane

That opening segment was rather painful to listen too.
Generations released in 2011 5 years and like 8 games since the last buggy Sonic game (Sonic 06)(3 of which were 3d with 2 more being on rails 3d) not even counting racing games.
And non of the Sonic Boom games were made by Sonic Team so there is no reason to relate them to Generations and even tho Lost Worlds is the least Sonic Sonic game ever so was it a perfectly functioning platformer. With only 1 massive miss game design wise in 2017 with Forces (2 if you want to count Colors Ultimate).
Like I don't even like the 2010s due to them taking the franchise into a direction that I didn't enjoy but can we please stay somewhat objective here please?
And of cause was Generations all about nostalgia it was a big Celebration of the series 20 year history giving each mainline game presentation with 1 by fans voted on stage.
And mind you again in 2011 when Generations released was it beside maybe Sonic 4 Episode 1 the ONLY Sonic game to really milk nostalgia in any meaningful way. Especially as Secret rings was mostly stand alone, Unleashed tried to distance it self from just about everything else and same is true for Colors Wii. Only Black Knight and Colors Ds had any fan service and even that was mostly limited to minor call backs or optional sub missions.
Like Generations was the first time any new Sonic platformer opened with Green Hill since Sonic Advance 1's neo green hill zone or if we wanna stretch it to zone 2 Sunset Hill in Advance 3 from 2004.
Never mind that if it was just "about what worked in the past" they almost certainly would have skipped Sonic 06 but no it just like Heroes, and Unleashed get the same premium treatment that a Sonic 3 or a Adventure 2 got because it was a series celebration and regardless if the original was good or bad it to was part of the series history that was being celebrated.
And the Mania comparison is just ridicules only Colors and Unleashed had boost style levels and only Sonic 1,2 and 3&K had classic like levels as such did everything else had to be entirely re-imagined in these styles of gameplay. A 06 stage had to be classic-fied and a Sonic 2 stage had to be turned into a boosting extravaganza. Generations did infinitely more as a result with its old stages than Mania which only took stages from games that already played like Sonic Mania and for act 1 even often left large chunks of the original level design untouched with even most of the new mechanics just coming from other classic sonic stages (like Stardust speed way is using Marble Garden, Hydrocity uses Labyrinth elements and Oil Ocean takes from Sandopolis).
So I think its rather obvious that I disagree with you and I hope my point so far made it clear as to why I do.

Bro... it's an anniversary game. Ofc it'll focus of nostalgia. It's probably the greatest nostalgia game we got, besides Maina and maybe Shadow Generations. It's fun, contorls well, and well thought out level gimicks. Sure, there isn't much of a story but should there considering that this is an anniversary game. (Also edit: Maybe make a comment to let people know that you already know. Like people aren't gonna read the description unless you tell them yourselves.)
It's an anniversary game, playing old levels is literally the selling point. saying your sick of green hill makes no sense. the only reason your saying that is because of games like forces and frontiers reusing and those came AFTER generations. and at least try to get the timeline of the games right.

This is just so objectively wrong. Sonic Mania goes by two acts and for classic levels in that game the first act is just a straight 1:1 remake of the original level of that location (green hill act 1 is just original green hill act 1 and 2 mashed together) while Act 2 remixes the level and gives a new design.
Sonic Generation gives a entirely new experience on both act 1 and act 2 while having moments in the level that references the original levels design.
That's literally the point of the game 💀

Being an “Anniversary Title” is mostly irrelevant as Mania had 4 original zones, and SA2 and (to a somewhat lesser extent) 06 were mostly original.
I literally just said that nostalgia was the whole damn point of Generations. And when I say that, I mean it as on it’s own terms even compared to other anniversary titles.

I said this in a reply but I think its generally worth saying without it being hidden under someone else's comment. Sonic Adventure 2 was an anniversary game, did that have to repurpose settings and events for the sake of celebrating Sonic? No, it didn’t. It’s still boring and uninteresting to reuse previous Sonic locations and stitch them together with a story that you’d think came out of a writer’s strike.

There’s a difference between having a cute reference to the game that started it all, and being a glorified highlight reel. I feel like you're purposefully taking the game out of context. When this game 1st came out bringing back old zones in a modern revitalized way was a brand new concept, furthermore nostalgia was the entire point of the game. Despite you mentioning the game did release in 2012 you talk about the game and compare it with others as if the game was released in 2016. It's an anniversary game, it does what its supposed to do and at a time when what it did was fresh and exiting.
in my opinion it doesnt, it ruin nostalgia. i wish the adventure era continued. it has so much more potential, why move away from something that was awesome. i would ve love generation as a adventure game. boost isnt bad, it just something you shouldnt used, if you cant use all his abilities. if they wanna use a boost, it should be from a item box. like the super shoes etc
