- On the latest episode of Off The Post, Toronto SUN Sports Columnist Steve Simmons, Postmedia Hockey Columnist Bruce Garrioch, Vancouver Sun and The Province Canucks Reporter Patrick Johnston and Postmedia's Rob Wong discuss the Maple Leafs decision to relieve Sheldon Keefe of his head coaching duties, how his time in Toronto will be remembered, the wild Game 1 between the Oilers and Canucks and which players have impressed so far in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Needed to fire Shanahan, too. Keeping Shanahan is like keeping the same GM of an underperforming company, and firing the office manager....
Given a goalie he would still be the coach
My choice would be Gerrard Gallant. Look up his coaching record vs. Berube. It's not even close. I mean first year with Vegas ! Check his Rangers record. His personality is also the best fit. I totally agree with Simmons in that Berube winning the Cup with St.Louis was a fluke.
then berube is! welcome to leaf land.
I agree. Gallant is best
I think the Canucks 3rd goalie …. We may not know much or expect much from a young unknown goalie . . But I feel this was an off game for him also . The Canucks have something special here in net , and as a team .
The Oilers shut down after the 4 goal lead. This is the Oilers' modus operandi. This team has done this on a fairly consistent basis ever since Peter Pocklington blew up the last of "The Boys On The Bus" in the early 90s. I know all about the dogma of never embarrass the competition but I've always asked the question "Why the hell not?!" Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Evan Bouchard, and Zack Hyman aren't paid countless millions every season to skate around in their own end or the neutral zone and flick the puck back and forth. They're paid to score, period. I was in Northlands Coliseum for most of the playoffs in 1985, including watching the boys skate around with the Stanley Cup over their heads after their second championship run was finished. I know what a championship team looks like. They could play whatever style was required when the playoffs rolled around and most games weren't blowouts. But they rarely took their foot off the gas. When they did, the other team, more often than not, won. And this was an Oilers team that had the horsepower to come back from 2 or 3 goal deficits in the third period and proved it numerous times. However, most of the time that Oilers squad just went out in front and never looked back. This year's version of the Oilers, for all their talent, does not look anything like the legendary Cup teams. McDavid and Draisaitl versus Gretzky and Messier is not even close. No other current team matches that either. Those Cup teams also had clutch goaltending and this is the real key to winning a Stanley Cup. No team has ever won a Stanley Cup without spectacular goaltending. And I'm not talking about regular season stats or performances. Connor Hellebuyck was great for Winnipeg in the regular season just as he was last year. His playoff record does not match this at all and that's why Winnipeg is out, yet again. Ditto for Toronto. A team may pull off a gritty defensive performance here and there in the playoffs and may overcome sub-par goaltending for a game or two but they won't win a series like that, much less the Cup. It can come from a great hall of fame regular season goalie who ups his game for the playoffs or it may come from a relative unknown rookie who ultimately ends up in the hall of fame (Ken Dryden and Patrick Roy) or not (Cam Ward). It can show up when a journeyman just gets hot and plays lights out at the right time (Mike Richter, not exactly a journeyman but not really a league elite goalie; and Roland Melanson, though Melanson didn't win the Cup he's the main reason the Oilers got to the Cup final in 2006.) Colorado's goaltending is their biggest question mark, game 2 showed that. I will pick Dallas over Colorado so long as Dallas keeps putting lots of pucks at Colorado's net. Otter is better than Colorado's guy in a shotfest. If that series settles into a defensive struggle Dallas wins. What we saw in the Canucks-Oilers game was two questionable goaltenders. Yes, I know defence is important but the goalie is that last line. If he's not clutch you ain't winning the Cup. That scares me and that's why I still think the Oilers have a long way to go. If Skinner, admittedly young and even still green in the playoff cauldron, settles in and steadies his game the Oilers msy gave a chance for the brass ring. But they cannot repeat that first game performance. That was one of the worst playoff games Conner McDavid has played, ever. And they were all huilty of putting it in cruise halfway through the game. The last half of that game was the best the Canucks have plsyed in these playoffs, including their goalie. If the Oilers get their 💩 together, the Canucks will have to match that ladt 30 minutes performance all the rest of the way to have any chance to beat the Oilers.
Where were Brodie and Giodano supposed to progress to? No where, they had topped out. Team defense and the D-core on its own aren't Cup contender material. Works for me.
Steve; put your laptop on a pile of books so its even with your face and we don't have to look up your nose. And you're right about Berube.
it's Bruce Beaufaux
They won't get Berube because they move to slow in decision making
Berube sucks
That's it - that's all they're gonna do. And do you know why? Because the fans are gonna show up in October anyway so why bother? They keep buying tickets and merchandize and unless the changes, the MLSE will not do anything. You'll see tomorrow.
People vote for Trudeau too!
@@davemercer4779 Well, that requires an advanced stage of dementia. No, seriously, only mentally deranged people or people, who truly hate Canada can vote for Trudeau.
Don't give it to the Rangers' goalie yet. Washington wasn't really a playoff team and Carolina is not Dallas or Colorado or Boston or Florida or even Vancouver or Edmonton.
What a incredibly tough path for everyone 🇨🇦🇺🇸😁
To even suggest this wasn't the right move is absurd
Love Rick Tocchet walking the walk 😁🇨🇦🇺🇸
Is this a real question?
Al Arbour and Fred Shero effect 🔥🇨🇦🇺🇸😁
Never know the answer sad to see this guy going somewhere else 😁🇨🇦🇺🇸
This is yet another cover for Shanahan. Keefe was hired by Dubas and Dubas by Shanahan. Shanahan has been there for ten years and has achieved nothing with two top 10% players and the best goal scorer of the generation. Keefe looked like a gentleman and Shanahan is ducking responsibility. Shame on Shanahan.
The Leaf's need to relocate, and re-brand themselves. This team doesn't deserve to wear the Maple leaf on their jerseys. I think the fan, and tax payers are tired of supporting a business that never profits.
What is this, two head coaches, three GMs. What else is this team going to fire to excuse the perfomance of the players? Are we going to fire the equipment manager next?
Zamboni driver !
Crazy 😂Canucks 🔥🇨🇦
