AE5DW checking in. I found you via the RAV4 skid plate video. We just bought a 2022 RAV4 LE for my wife. Looking forward to checking out the POTA content. I've been bitten by the bug. Putting together a FX-4C POTA station right now. 73!

Don! Thanks so much for saying a quick hi, and awesome to hear about the 2022 RAV4 for your wife! I've just had mine for just over a year, and had fun creating this skid plate install video as something different than other SOTA & POTA content. For light off-roading to trailhead, etc. the RAV4 w/ Skid Plate has been great to have, and then the AT tire upgrade this summer helped with the Oregon SOTA roads. (-:. Very cool about being bitten by the POTA bug, and that you're putting together a station right now! Again, appreciate you saying a quick hi! 73, James

Well, you filled in what the LP video left out, concerning the access covers. Great vid...

Let us know if it's more difficult to change the oil with a smaller access hole in the new skid plate and also if it collects more debris with a no cover on access hole.

I just did my install without taking the wheels off, put on 9 inch ramp which gave me enough space to pull both access panels off. Also there is a small open space where another panel meets the front panel and no attachment point for the back panel. You might have a possible snaging of rear panel, Ill try to fabricate a strap to lift that rear point to keep from snagging on road objects. Let me know if you have same concerns.

Thanks for comments, and appreciate you taking the time to share! Awesome to hear your experience below about installing using 9" ramp and having enough space to install without taking both access panels off!

I haven't seen issues with more debris due to no cover on access hole, but I had limited off roads this summer. I have changed the oil a few times, and it's a bit more difficult to find the right wrench primarily to get oil filter off and then tighten. Overall not too bad, but a bit tight especially for the oil filter...

@robertthorn9560 I used 10 in. stainless steel zip ties to attach to a cross support , attaching the plastic back panel to keep from sagging and catching on road debris.

I’m curious how you have installed your radios in your Rav 4. Could you make a video, please. 73, Brian G8OSN / W8OSN

Thank you reaching out and asking about this...I've thought about making a video about radios in the Rav4, and your question will help made a priority. (-: I currently have a "temp" solution with mag mount on roof with Diamond dual band antenna...cable through rear door to Yaesu 500 radio under driver seat...with Lido suction cup mount holding Yaesu head unit to lower left windshield...and extension cable for mic which rests in the middle console. Will have to give more info in video, but wanted to share this quickly. I also have had a 900 mhz meshtastic antenna & device, but will need to rework that in future (-:

@@wa7jnjradio Thank you. I've not installed my radio yet. I plan to mount the antenna on the roof bar. 73 G8OSN.

Nice work. What made you choose this skid plate as opposed to one of the ones from the other manufacturers? Also, if you're looking for an alternative to a magnet mount, you could use the Diamond 412 on the passenger side of the hood, between the hood and windshield. Or, the Diamond HRKS and a half wave antenna like the Comet 680 dual band. I did the latter and it looks very clean. de K6TW

Thank you for taking time to comment, and appreciate your feedback on more permanent antenna install. After having a temp install the last few years when switching vehicles, I do want something more permanent and will have to check out your recommendations. I recently bought the Yaesu FTM-500, DIAMOND
SG7500NMO, and a bracket to attach NMO mount to a ditch light hood bracket. Haven't bought the ditch light bracket yet and may reconsider? For your question, LP came up when searching for skid plates, and I liked the simplicity of their ditch light brackets as well. Also liked the simplicity of install, and opening are working well so far for oil changes. Overall really like it, and have felt much better getting to trailheads the last month or so...and also with new AT tires (-: 73, James WA7JNJ

I have to replace the PLASTIC skid on my '19 rav4 adventure due to A) Mechanics losing and not replacing the bolts (if they even tightened them well after oil service to begin with) and the plastic clips. B) Went thru a water puddle, underestimating the slight depth, at a speed limit (didnt see the puddle til i was right on it) and the pull of the water pulled at the PLASTIC oil door access.
as my toyota is canada made, I can get just the oil door access and instead would need to get the whole plastic skid for $350 before labor....liek WTF.
Came across LP for only $280....AND ONLY 4 BOLTS vs the 10 bolts and clips of the stock one.....like what O_o.
i just need to order the thing lmao....this looks "simple" and fortunately my uncle is a jeep guy, so he knows how to take care of his vehicles.

Sorry to hear about the plastic skid plate, but agree for the price this was a great deal. I do light off-roading and felt much better having this plate, along with later getting AT tires! A few years ago I finally starting changing my oil, and only change I needed was getting a cheap wrench to loosen the oil filter. Overall I've been very happy with this, and really wasn't too bad to install! Always takes a bit longer than you think...but I would definitely buy this again!

A 10mm socket for a drill will get it done a lot quicker and less labor

Maybe if it helps save money for more radio equipment or get to a summit to play radio? (-: I normally just change the oil, but had fun trying a different style of video as I get ready for hiking and Summits on the Air (SOTA) adventures. Also loved that my dad was there to help, and hoping this non-radio video may help others learn about our great hobby! (-: 73, James WA7JNJ
