Elk Mountain Hike in Olympic Nat. Park | SOTA POTA
Second time hiking to Elk Mountain in Olympic National Park, which is a Summits on the Air (SOTA) 8-point summit. The hike is pretty straight-forward with 3 miles and 750 feet of gain total (I've uploaded GPS tracks to the sotl.as summit link below). There is no shade on this trail, so important to have sun protection. The summit is also located within Olympic National Park (POTA US-0056).
For awareness, many hike further along the trail to Obstruction Point...and the SOTA summit is a short distance off trail. I tried approaching the summit this time a bit more from the west/southwest, but the track I have posted to sotl.as below and in the video is the recommended track.
While on summit, I was able to make 2m contacts with activators on other summits ~100 miles away and fun to make contact with a boat ~75 miles away. I was having cell phone services issues and not able to spot this time, but I tried calling on 20m & 40m using the Wolf River Coil antenna this time. The last time activating the summit, I used an end-fed antenna with mast jammed between rocks and that worked great.
When hiking to summits along Obstruction Point Road, please first check road conditions as the road is usually only open a few months each year. If hiking earlier in the season you may also want to check trail conditions. The first time I tried hiking to Elk Mtn, I turned around due to snow on the steep section just after starting to hike. I didn't have micro-spikes with me, and decided to come back later in season with no left-over snow.

Obstruction Point as "Scary" road? This was one of the articles talking about the road... I've driven a few times now, and would recommend going with dry weather, mid-week with less traffic if able and AWD. The road is in good condition, but can be narrow at times and with heavy weekend traffic might be a bit tougher.

    Nice video, good use of the 360 camera and editing. What frequency were you on 2Meters and did you get all those contacts by calling CQ or was that prearranged? I cannot imagine getting all of those contacts on 2M back east here! beautiful mountain and oh my did you have a good weather day! Good to see someone else lug the WRC coil to a summit; I thought I was the only one... hahaha See: ua-cam.com/video/bVD_6JR0__8/v-deo.html Great video look forward to the other installments. Would love to be able to activate a peak on 2M - so much easier! COngrats, great video!

      Thank you Bob for nice comments about use of 360 and editing... I definitely love the 360 for unique shots and still learning how to best use in videos. Fun you mention the WRC, and I felt bad about not being able to spot and make hf contacts that day. I definitely like it for certain situations, and generally don't mind hiking with it or the Elk Log Periodic for 2m/70cm. For 2m contacts I did post an alert, but many of the summits around the Puget Sound area have great line-of-sight and can relatively easily be activated on VHF only if needed. In other parts of the country it's pretty unique to be able to activate with 2m, but definitely fun to hear voices of many familiar SOTA/POTA chasers around the Puget Sound in Washington. The 2m qso's were on 146.52 and 146.56... we''ll also sometime use 146.58, and in Oregon most of the SOTA chasers monitor 146.58. Thanks again for nice comments and VHF questions! Have a great rest of the week! 73, James WA7JNJ

      Of course... Google Earth Studio makes it much easier to actually use for videos! I had to apply in order to use, but went very quickly and they sent a link to use. The interface is much better, and I've started using a standard "Quick Start" views including the "circle" option. After choosing the quick start for circle, I'll input the SOTA GPS coordinates and then adjust a few setting for distance from location, etc. My email is on qrz, and open to chat by phone or zoom if you want to walk through... 73.

    I have to replace the PLASTIC skid on my '19 rav4 adventure due to A) Mechanics losing and not replacing the bolts (if they even tightened them well after oil service to begin with) and the plastic clips. B) Went thru a water puddle, underestimating the slight depth, at a speed limit (didnt see the puddle til i was right on it) and the pull of the water pulled at the PLASTIC oil door access. as my toyota is canada made, I can get just the oil door access and instead would need to get the whole plastic skid for $350 before labor....liek WTF. Came across LP for only $280....AND ONLY 4 BOLTS vs the 10 bolts and clips of the stock one.....like what O_o. i just need to order the thing lmao....this looks "simple" and fortunately my uncle is a jeep guy, so he knows how to take care of his vehicles.

      Sorry to hear about the plastic skid plate, but agree for the price this was a great deal. I do light off-roading and felt much better having this plate, along with later getting AT tires! A few years ago I finally starting changing my oil, and only change I needed was getting a cheap wrench to loosen the oil filter. Overall I've been very happy with this, and really wasn't too bad to install! Always takes a bit longer than you think...but I would definitely buy this again!

      Thank you for comment and question! Short answer is that you can keep your family isolated from other, and when setting up devices for my wife and kids I won't include the public main channel. You can set up an encryption code that you only share with your family, and I've seen a new meshtastic software update will be making messaging even more secure in the future... Link attached is to the Comms Channel video about setting up channels, and I've watched a few times when thinking about how to setup for my family. ua-cam.com/video/2Z8_-EVwizw/v-deo.htmlsi=YIncLIsuSJCcyf6t This link is for channels on Meshtastic site, and AES 128 or AES 256 is encryption methodology (does sound like will be improving encryption in next update for privately communicating with another station that you don't have a shared private channel. meshtastic.org/docs/configuration/radio/channels/ Hope this helps! N1CC award : how many contacts u have to make on each band? All 10 bands have to be on a single day or can I try a different band on a different day from the same park and will get counted towards the award?

    • @wa7jnjradio
      @wa7jnjradio 2 місяці тому

      Thanks for watching and reaching out with question! For N1CC, you only need to make 1 contact on each of the 10 bands for that park and the contacts can be on different days or activations. For nearly all my parks, I got the 10 bands over 2 or 3 activations... (I do still have 2 parks that I can activate together and need to get the last few bands to complete the award...) 73, James

    Before anyone drops another dime on this, they had better get involved in stopping the FCC from selling off the 900MHz band: ua-cam.com/video/dGMg8lwR2lg/v-deo.html I wanted to get started in this for awhile, and finally took the plunge, even just last week setting up a router for my neighborhood. Now it might all be money down the toilet if this goes through.

    Nice work. What made you choose this skid plate as opposed to one of the ones from the other manufacturers? Also, if you're looking for an alternative to a magnet mount, you could use the Diamond 412 on the passenger side of the hood, between the hood and windshield. Or, the Diamond HRKS and a half wave antenna like the Comet 680 dual band. I did the latter and it looks very clean. de K6TW

      Thank you for taking time to comment, and appreciate your feedback on more permanent antenna install. After having a temp install the last few years when switching vehicles, I do want something more permanent and will have to check out your recommendations. I recently bought the Yaesu FTM-500, DIAMOND SG7500NMO, and a bracket to attach NMO mount to a ditch light hood bracket. Haven't bought the ditch light bracket yet and may reconsider? For your question, LP came up when searching for skid plates, and I liked the simplicity of their ditch light brackets as well. Also liked the simplicity of install, and opening are working well so far for oil changes. Overall really like it, and have felt much better getting to trailheads the last month or so...and also with new AT tires (-: 73, James WA7JNJ

    Hi! I am looking into places to camp and found your video. You created a great video! I’m wondering are you allowed to sleep in your car in the parking lot of this trail? I’ve heard that the deer park campground fills up quickly so I’m wondering if the parking lot up there would be an alternative to stay the night.

    You did not provide any evidence at all as to the superiority of the radios you recommend. Do we know for a fact that they are more sensitive? Or was his Baofeng overloaded (experiencing desense) where he was on the summit? Gee, if you could demonstrate a Yaesu FT60 copying signals where the Baofeng fails that would be more convincing than just saying to buy a more expensive radio. By the way, the FT70 is also made in China. 73 de k2xt

    • @wa7jnjradio
      @wa7jnjradio 4 місяці тому

      Hello Rick and appreciate the comment. Purpose of this video was to share what most SOTA activators learn pretty quickly through experience. Being overloaded, limited filtering, direct conversion receive, etc. are definitely things that work against you when on summit and I've experiences through testing and hearing from others. N7KOM has a video about the same topic with FT60 comparison ua-cam.com/video/vkd07g7AmBQ/v-deo.htmlsi=trKQMh2SkQq_lDW_ and at some point I may do similar comparison... since I've had the same experience on summit with Baofeng hearing half or less than what FT70 did. (-: Hope you have a great rest of the weekend! 73, James

    Great video James! I also did my first SOTA with a Beofeng, with a similar experience. Not much of an upgrade but now using a Radioddity GS-5B. Probably time for me to get a better HT. 73

      Thank you, and appreciate you sharing your story as well! Think there's a lot of us who use one to start, and love that we use what we have and learn from it. I was definitely impressed with the FT70 on the second summit due to filtering and more sensitive receiver, especially since I was so reliant on 2m contacts early on before getting general license. Thanks again for comments, and have a great weekend! 73

    Most cheap radios actually are quite sensitive on V/UHF. But if you are on a mountain some of them have transmitters nearby and it will affect a radio with a barn door style front end, like cheap Boafengs etc.

    • @wa7jnjradio
      @wa7jnjradio 4 місяці тому

      Agree... I'm usually surprised at how well cheaper radios are, but better filtering and superhet receivers seem to work better. For me it was good learning to experience, and then compare the radios on my second (and other) summits. Hope you have a great weekend!
