Thank you for the abundance of kind words! My theory is that Garage Fab is relatively new and though I take great pride in creating videos, that makes it difficult to produce as much content as often as UA-cam wants before it starts promoting the channel. I’m not great at SEO at the moment either.
I also can’t wait! I’ve got so many insane projects that I want to share with the world but that will be quite difficult with a day job.

im not really a fabricator but i have two angle grinders. great tool. i would recommend a portable bandsaw, with a DIY stand and a foot pedal! ive used mine to cut so much metal, and it was all about $100. great for knife making.

A few years ago, when I was working at a small manufacturing shop, the boss showed up with a Chicago Electric grinder from Harbor Freight. I killed it in about two days. I told him I needed a Milwaukee. For some sick reason there is something very gratifying from letting the smoke out of a grinder until ALL of the smoke leaves.
Haha! Never done it but I can imagine the satisfaction!
I picked up an electric TRUMPF throatless hand held shear at the swap meet in Atlanta last summer for $80 in the case with the manuals, OMG what a freaking dream. It retails in the mid $300 range I believe. I cannot tell you how nice it is when doing any sheet metal work. The other is my portaband which is great for cutting pipe, tube etc.
I love my Hobart 220v mig and my 220v plasma cutter.
For welding the best thing I can think of is the best helmet and gloves you can buy, you will never be sorry for having either one of those.
I’ve seen those shears but never used one! I hear great things though so I’m likely gonna have to pick one up. Also!!! The portable band Saw is my next purchase. Another thing I hear people rave about. I can think of a few things it would be handy with.
@@GarageFab something I use way more than I thought I would is my 1/2" wide mini belt sander, 18" belt length. The tip wraps prabably a 1/4 roller which allows you to direct a grind and then also lay it down as the belt head rotates..

I would add a drill press and hand drill ahead of a plasma cutter, a nibler and tin snips.

Yes! As do I. Hyper disposable actually. Many will disagree, but the $18 grinder from Harbor Freight is quite good. It doesn’t last as long as some high dollar ones (obviously) but I’ve got backups up the yin Yang.

I've used those plus the cheapy China made ones sold under "King Canada" at hardware stores, sometimes they last years other times they last 4 months. But they're so cheap I don't care. The one tool that's better cheap, just have more then 1 tho. Lol

Not a beginner and mostly commenting to feed the algorithm, good list and dead on with the grinder being #1 and the tin snips being the most evil tool on the planet. I’m an HVAC tech and I still only use them when absolutely necessary, my home workshop doesn’t even have a single set of snips.

The Dantes Inferno tin snips reference is going to give me nightmares! (Brilliant analogy! ) I have only one of the three left and it gets used to cut the tails off of zip ties. I've owned every color iteration of the HF angle grinders with blue to orange to the mighty rust color. Currently have 3 but need one on the shelf too! They have served well and parts were interchangeable. I am surprised at the plasma cutter rating. I have fallen in love with mine as this dual voltage machine on 220V slices through half inch and when I didn't want to wrestle with the heavy 220V volt cord for light stuff, 110V did nicely. I pulled HF and Empire side by side to compare prices. Thanks for the suggestion cause now I don't have to wait on HF sale and items will be deliverd to my door! Really great video!
Believe me Willie, the plasma cutter is by far my favorite purchase of all time. It saves me so much energy, grief, and time. The only reason it was so low on the list was it’s huge price point. I think this video in general was aimed at people just getting into fabrication. Though the plasma cutter makes everything so much easier and faster, you can still accomplish all the same projects without it.
In other words, don’t be discouraged from starting fabrication because you think you can’t do anything without this million dollar machine.

Do you still use the oxy acetylene even though you have a plasma cutter? My tanks got me through when I had nothing else but they terrify me so I hope to never have to refill them.
@@GarageFab I’ll use oxy acetylene when out in the field at work for metal that needs to be scrapped or removed, basically demo purposes. Most recently I used it to heat crane pick points that were bent on a skid, so I could forge them to be square again. Plasma cutter is much safer in my opinion and leaves much nicer cuts that don’t need much grinding or prep work, so if I was cutting thick plate for a fab project it definitely be the tool I’d go with. Would love to own a CNC table one day. Keep up the content brother, I really hope the UA-cam algorithm works in your favor you deserve it!

Hey a regular cordless skilsaw and a steel cutting blade from Diablo works amazing I use a Dewalt 20v and a 6.25 inch blade makes perfectly straight cuts through .25 Wall 2by2 in about 15 seconds
Does that not spin too fast for the blade? That sounds interesting. I wouldn’t mind trying that.
You do such a good job presenting information, it'd be great to see a video on shop air and plumbing.
That’s an interesting one. Also one that might earn me a lot of grief. People get sensitive when you do things that potentially go against building codes.
My air compressor is in the back of my house, and breaker box is in the garage at the front of the house. So I installed 2 inch galvanized conduit the entire length of the house and ran the power cable and a length of 5/8 inch DOT plastic airline for semi truck air brakes side by side through that conduit.
In my opinion it’s far better than PVC but I just predict folks getting upset with the shared conduit for some reason.

Would really like a small stomp shear to breakdown large sheets, but after watching you use the Kent shear in another video I immediately clicked your link and ordered one before I even finished watching the whole episode. @@GarageFab Just tried it ...... man what a sweet way to make some seriously straight cuts. If you need to make a turn or follow a contour and the piece is just too unwieldly for the Beverly, I highly recommend the Makita JS1602 throatless shear. Its just really hard to make perfectly straight cuts with it. Now I have all 3 bases covered 😎

Portaband is great for cutting a lot and it's affordable and not much dust like a grinder. The harbor freight one works pretty good and it's not too expensive
It’s likely I just don’t know how to use it but I found it oversized, awkward and difficult to get accurate cuts. I may have to try again!
The Oxy Acetylene cutting torch, ranks high on my list, first because it is just damn fun to use and some even consider cutting steel with fire a rite of passage into manhood, also in some cases I can put back together what I cut not to mention all the other uses.
Well that explains it! I’m not a man. 😬 I had/have a small mobile oxy/acetylene kit. It was great. But I was scared to death. When it finally went empty, I never refilled it. 😆
I buy them for 10 bucks on sale at Harbor Freight and keep three of them loaded with different discs. They last quite a while
Right!? I guess I’m boujee. I pay the extra dough for the super fancy HF units. I’ve only replaced one since I started buying them. It had a noisy bearing. I haven’t yet seen one let the smoke out!

Interesting. I have -- and love --most of the basics. And I yearn for, but don't really have sufficient use for, the plasma cutter. Small shop and limited job so I can outsource when needed. But the basics are necessary (and a joy to use as the project comes together).

old video I know, so you may or may not see this. I recently was cutting up a 50 gal steel drum and decided to try a carbide tipped jig saw blade. I was blown away. It was easy to control and faster than my reciprocating, and required far less.... lets say safety prep than the plasma.
I see all Sully! I have never heard of a carbide tipped jigsaw blade, but I assure you I will be searching for one immediately! Thank you for the tip. Pun intended.

Great list! I have 8 small grinders with different discs installed so I can grab the one I want for the operation I'm going to do. I also have three 9" grinders for the same reason. What I personally now need is a laser cutter/welder.

I feel you. I’ve been saving for years for a CNC plasma table, but not that I’ve almost saved enough, I think I’d rather spend it on interesting UA-cam projects! Decisions decisions.
@@GarageFab Lessee, there's one with a 1/16" slitting disc, one with a 1/8" disc, onw with a 1/4" disc. one with an 80 grit sanding disc, one with a flapper wheel, one with a 4" wire cup, one with a 4" 3M paint stripping wheel, one with a walter 4.5" flexcut disc. There is actually a ninth one with a masonry disc in it, and it's still on the grinder 'cos I couldn't undo the locking ring, so it's permanent. I also keep a half dozen new grinders in a draw in case one burns out. I have a box full of fried grinders too. A CNC plasma table is something I REALLY want too. But then again, I REALLY want a laser welder and a Bridgeport milling machine an'... well, you get the picture. Space for me is also at a premium.
Have you tried the 3M Cubitron II disc yet? OMG It’s a miracle disc! I think I’m going to have to do a video on it.
Yup. Space. Wish it grew on trees. Hopefully sometime in the next 10 years UA-cam will pay for a slightly larger shop and then the collecting of fancy tools will begin.

Bro. Buy one just to test. It’s certainly NOT for detail work. But if you want to flatten welds really fast, sculpt heavy plate or remove mill scale easily… I promise you’ll be thrilled.
It doesn’t create metal “dust”. Instead it shaves off metal strands that resemble steel wool. And the 80 grit flap discs I bought last a really long time as well.
I wish I could get a sponsorship from 3M. I would hype them up like crazy.

I have a bunch of different cutters for metal ...but my most used one is the same as you ...a grinder...I dont know how many I have worn out but I have some old air ones that work perfect yet..but I have a big air compressor also. For the people that dont use them a lot the 110 ..4. 1/2 inch by Harbor Freight is the way to go.
I've had the same 2 Dewalt 4"-1/2 inch grinders ($110 each) for the past 5 years and I only use one. The other is in a drawer. I have a 5" inch Dewalt grinder ($160) that I also use and it is 4 years old. They are my most used cutting devices. My number 2 is my milwaukee bandsaw because I work with pipe. My number 3 is a Reciprocating saw. Mainly used when I demo or when I use cutting blocks for stainless tube. I have the plasma and oxy fuel torch in the same position because they are both time consuming to setup.
Tell me more about cutting blocks! The first thing that comes to mind is a miter box.
I bleed yellow as well. Until recently everything I owned was DeWalt. If you watch for any given time you’ll see them. I haven’t had the luck you have though with the grinders. Maybe I mistreat them! 🤔
Yes, truly the black and decker 4.5” angle grinder gets a workout in my shop. It seams strange as when the brushed wore to the point of failure, I didn’t think it would that hard to find them. Somehow I ended up in the UK on eBay from a guy who had excellent photos and dimensions while listing model numbers they fit. I quick found the identical shape, size and fit even though it did not list my model. I bought a pair, came in two weeks and had it running in minutes. I let him know to add my model to the list as they were not sold in the US. Planned obsolescence will have you tossing a good tool in the trash because you can’t find a $6 part set.
While “Roto-Zip” hit the market as the tool to use on drywall. But many bits fit the collet. Quickly they had a flex adaptor that is 4’ long. It uses basic speedometer cable. As a retired ASE Master tech, I use to fix these by greasing after a good cleaning, cut to length and crimp on a new end. Sold by Bosch, I called customer service to but a replace cable. “we don’t have any to sell!” Seriously? What about the two warranty centers, one in Canada? I am sure they had a box of 50-100 cables on hand but not in the retail inventory. Should have waited a few years to purchase a Dremel Brand. I tried to make a clamping-shaping fixture with little luck. It sits idle in my canvas bag with a note not to purchase. I have seen older new parts inventory destroyed and tossed from warehouses with new GM parts. When a warehouse buys 2 million in cost of parts per year, they will bend over backwards to make them happy, while new GTO, Camero, HEI distributors hit the trash, it brings a tear to my eye!
I am know longer employed after tearing a rotator cuff stacking a rack & pinion for return while 5hrs from home, drove home after seeing a Dr. the next AM at 8:15, told to go home to seek a surgery. Worked two weeks finishing paperwork, having the surgery and getting that phone call with no explanation, but my position was dissolved. Good to excellent reviews, higher numbers than 50 others and on the road 243 days per year in 7 states. Done.
If you reach this point, injured on the job, workers comp will drag their feet until 2 days before court date. If you file for SSD and get it, they take your settlement!!!!! Just be warned.
That’s a whole lot of unnecessary roughness! I’ve been a mechanic for only 15 years. I’m hoping UA-cam will be my retirement. I don’t ever plan to quit working, but I do plan to quit working for other people. Imagine building whatever you want when you want and getting paid for it. Sounds like a dream. You left one out ! I often see you drilling with a bit I am unfamiliar with. It is very wide at the business end. I can't afford a plasma cutter. I'm still spend gazillions on parts. So what kind of drill bit is that ? When I have to cut tight corners in thick metal, I drill the entire piece. I could send you a photo but don't know how . Drilling takes forever in thick metal but it's a hobby, right ? So forever is acceptable. I enjoy the hobby. But I'm eating bits fast. As always, anxious for your next vid. I am hoping to do a cantilever rear suspension in a 29 Tudor utilizing my coilovers. Cutting the cantilevers will be especially fun. If I start yesterday, I should be done in 2033 !

I actually use my 3 inch air grinder with a bad dog cut off wheel. It’s got a lifetime warranty no matter how much abuse you give it. I’m kinda partial to my air tools.

Yeah, I often find things that a lathe would help with. I’ll get one eventually, but probably not until I get a little more space.

I’ve got 5 big projects planned for this channel and 4 of them are mini trucks. So there will definitely be a few more mini truck vids over the next few years. I just got some link bar and watts link bushings that I ordered over a month ago so I can finally get back on the Max. There will always be the shorter fabrication related videos in between to fill the gaps.

In terms of cuts-per-dollar, it can not be beat! 🙌
Regarding the angle grinder -- Would you list your preference of disks? I looked at empire and there is quite an assortment.
I really only use a few discs all of which are 4 1/2” I use the thinnest cutoff wheel Empire carries which is a sixteenth inch thick. It cuts really fast and removes less material but it wears down pretty quickly as well.
I stock 40, 80 and 120 grit flap discs and I recently discovered 3M Cubitron II flap discs which are incredible at shredding metal quickly but unfortunately they can’t be purchased from Empire at the moment.
The only other discs in my shop is some cheap wire wheels that I got from Harbor Freight which come in handy when removing rust, dirt and rubber coatings etc.
I don’t use hard grinding discs because they just scare me and they don’t work all that great so why risk an exploding grinding disc to the face?
Tin snips do suck, but they're way more useful if you're doing sheet aluminum work, and particularly *thin* sheet aluminum work, such as on an airplane. I'm a big meaty dude, and I *have* used them on steel... but I'd strongly prefer not to. ;)
But if I need to make a precise shape out of .030 aluminum, I'm probably reaching for the snips.
I imagine your familiar with the Beverly Shear? Ever since I got that, I haven’t touched a tin snip since. Thank goodness.

Harborfreight has Bauer electric shears for like 54 bucks and they are awesome. I never needed a set cause i always had a 10 ft shear at the shop. but now that im a home gamer......they beat the shit out of a jigsaw or composite wheel.
I’m happy with all the Bauer stuff I’ve gotten so far. If I didn’t have a set already, I’d definitely give them a shot.
@@GarageFab i bought them recently for this skoolie im building. 300 bucks for the makita set just wasnt happening. but these things rock! oh and you can def cut circles and free hand shapes. Down to about 6 radius with ease never went much smaller...though im sure theyll do it.

Hey Brian! What do you mean by portable? I’ve been considering investing in the Maxjax lift for my low-ceiling garage. You can unbolt it and roll it out of the way though I’m not sure it qualifies as “portable.”

Haha! I don’t recall where I ranked it. I also hate them. However if I remember correctly my ranking was based on cost vs the tool’s capability. Which should’ve put it somewhere near the top.

I’m with you. My toolbox at work looks the same. There are a few things that HAVE to be high quality. And many things on which Harbor Freight tools will work just fine. 👏
how would you rate evolution saws in your experience?
I use a big mixture of wood & metal & was thinking about getting thier compound mitre rather than just the chop saw.
It's marketed to be able to handle the smaller metal that I use. More of an unknown brand over here though
10 out of 10. I would certainly recommend it to a friend. It’s fast, it’s precise, minimal sparks, and it’s affordable. If I had one complaint it would be that the blades are expensive to replace, but after learning that they can be sharpened, this is barely a hassle either. Oh, and I cut wood with mine all the time.

It has a movable fence for mitre cuts, but the blade only moves up and down.
Hey bud I got a shop bagging my 51 merc he 4 linked and bagged it but now it's higher than it was when I took it to him at its lowest point when deflated went to look at it and noticed when it's dropped the rear suspension is hitting the body can you give me some ideas on what he needs to do to lay it on the ground would realy appreciate any help and thank you.
