I really like Lindsay and her overall work (The A-Word was great). I like her point of view of things and I like the fact that she disects her nostalgia and not only loves it. And YES. I really apreciate that Lindsay does her reviews in "plot" "characters" etc sections. Whenever a reviewer on the internet does a review following the movie they mostly are JUST summaries of the movie with some little moments of nitpicking. When you talk about structure and themes you are actually reviewing a movie. Thanks for all the content Lindsay, if you ever read this.
Oh yeah. I mean she started off closer to Doug's style and then evolved into her own thing that has culminated for years into what she does on her channel bow. Lindsay is hugely intellectual and analytical in her film discussion, with all of her videos being heavily steeped in film theory and societal context. Doug doesn't have the film studies background Lindsay has and so makes all his videos steeped a lot more in his own opinion and the impact the film had either on cinema itself or on the legacy of whatever person, franchise, etc. the film is representing. It's a lot more about the movie itself and what it means in a self-contained context than Lindsay' s format that is more about the technical craftsmanship of the film and its meaning in a larger societal context or technical filmmaking context. Their work is very complimentary actually. For a perfect comparison, check out their videos on Disney villains that coincidentally came out around the same time
First review of Lindsay's I watched was RENT, which I hated because it's one of my favorite movies and musicals. But once I've watched some more of her stuff, she's a smart, incisive reviewer.

As a film studies grad too I get where she's coming from a lot of the time - context is a string to a bow but it's good she knows not to overstretch it.

Where'd you hear that? I saw I stream conversation between her and ContraPoints and she brought up Doug Walker. She said they hadn't talked in a while, and that she doesn't like his politics ("milquetoast liberal centrism" as she put it), but I didn't sense that there's any animosity between them.
I'm a big fan of Lindsay and Red Letter Media, and I disagree with her pretty strongly when she says at 4:35 that they sometimes say sexist things. Sometimes Mike at RLM says jokes that make me cringe (talking about Kirsten Dunst he said "I'd like to put my Dunst in Kirsten's Cunst") but I don't think they're really sexist so much as crude. I don't think that's sexist any more than it was sexist when Lindsay reviewed Labyrinth and every time she saw David Bowie's tights she screamed "Package!" It's sexual humor, sometimes crude, but not sexist. Generally they're appalled when they encounter sexism in one of the movies they review, and in one case I remember them all being really angry at the exploitation of a girl in one of their Best of the Worst episodes.

Her and alot of other creators had a fallout with Doug and channel awesome, so bad an open letter was sent out documenting quite the dysfunction and subpar treatment they received by Doug. Lindsay Ellis doesn't really talk about it, she's too much of a professional, but theres other 3rd party youtubers who have covered it in videos.

I was totally shocked by the response to her Dune review, since I've never met a single person who didn't think that movie was total shit. Still the most disappointing adaptation I've ever seen.

The main issue with the film, was the really bizzare/stupid art direction, mainly to do with the space-bending Guild Masters, and the Harkonens, none of which was freaky looking like that in the book. The other problem is, the story itself is very intellectual, and slow burn, and it's certainly not going to be for everyone.

You're right, the bizarre imagery is what really ruins it, but what I also couldn't stand were the damn voice-overs. They were so awkward and clunky. Between that, the ridiculous costumes (Sting and his speedo being the worst offender), and Baron Harkonen zooming around the room on his anti-gravity suspensors, I spent way too much time laughing when I shouldn't have. The book has a lot of dialogue and a lot of inner monologue, which just doesn't translate well to the screen. They tried to get around the inner monologue with the voice-overs, which I didn't think worked at all. It wasn't quite as bad as Harrison Ford's narration in Blade Runner, but it was bad enough. It so often just came off as melodramtic and/or silly. Kyle McLachlan really was perfect as Paul. It's just a shame he had so much other crap stacked against him.

Lindsay is fantastic. She's so witty, so charasmatic, so charming and so insightful. It really makes me angry that people are hostile towards her.

I saw I stream conversation between her and ContraPoints and she brought up Doug Walker. She said they hadn't talked in a while, and that she doesn't like his politics ("milquetoast liberal centrism" as she put it), but I didn't sense that there's any animosity between them.

I'm a big fan of Lindsay and Red Letter Media, and I disagree with her pretty strongly when she says at 4:35 that they sometimes say sexist things.
Sometimes Mike at RLM says jokes that make me cringe (talking about Kirsten Dunst he said "I'd like to put my Dunst in Kirsten's Cunst") but I don't think they're really sexist so much as crude. I don't think that's sexist any more than it was sexist when Lindsay reviewed Labyrinth and every time she saw David Bowie's tights she screamed "Package!" It's sexual humor, sometimes crude, but not sexist.
Generally they're appalled when they encounter sexism in one of the movies they review, and in one case I remember them all being really angry at the exploitation of a girl in one of their Best of the Worst episodes.

What happened to the channel with Lindsey’s Nostalgia Chick videos? I had never seen those and they are amazing. It seems like they were all taken down for some reason. The Vintage Lindsey channel is still there but all the videos are private. Why?
Her and alot of other creators had a fallout with Doug and channel awesome, so bad an open letter was sent out documenting quite the dysfunction and subpar treatment they received by Doug. Lindsay Ellis doesn't really talk about it, she's too much of a professional, but theres other 3rd party youtubers who have covered it in videos.

I like her new work as well of course. But I really loved some of those early videos like the "Dark Nella saga". They were the kind I could watch multiple times but it seems they were up for a week or so and then went away. Anyway, thanks for the explanation, that is too bad.

I was totally shocked by the response to her Dune review, since I've never met a single person who didn't think that movie was total shit. Still the most disappointing adaptation I've ever seen.
I actually kinda liked it. Its one of my guilty pleasures ...
+SpamWarrior3000 The movie isn't total shit. The acting is, and the actors, are fantastic. The main issue with the film, was the really bizzare/stupid art direction, mainly to do with the space-bending Guild Masters, and the Harkonens, none of which was freaky looking like that in the book. The other problem is, the story itself is very intellectual, and slow burn, and it's certainly not going to be for everyone.
+poopmaster13 Honestly, I think Dune is one of those books that's practically impossible to film well. You're right, the bizarre imagery is what really ruins it, but what I also couldn't stand were the damn voice-overs. They were so awkward and clunky. Between that, the ridiculous costumes (Sting and his speedo being the worst offender), and Baron Harkonen zooming around the room on his anti-gravity suspensors, I spent way too much time laughing when I shouldn't have.
The book has a lot of dialogue and a lot of inner monologue, which just doesn't translate well to the screen. They tried to get around the inner monologue with the voice-overs, which I didn't think worked at all. It wasn't quite as bad as Harrison Ford's narration in Blade Runner, but it was bad enough. It so often just came off as melodramtic and/or silly.
Kyle McLachlan really was perfect as Paul. It's just a shame he had so much other crap stacked against him.
