By far the best version of 'Come Back' in existence. I strongly believe that this version comes from the "Hourglass" period or right after, because it shares a lot with that record. As far as I'm concerned, this is the only version I listen to, since it leaked on the internet. Put this one on the official tracklist, together with the sublime 'Ghost' and the underrated 'Oh Well', take out the much inferior official version of 'Come Back' and other much weaker songs like 'Peace', change the order of the songs, and you'll find out how great SOTU really is...
This was the version to go. Unfortunately, the band was locked in production and the song went through overproduction. You can see in "Sounds Of The Universe" documentary on DVD that they had spent an entire era changing this song that was perfect to begin with. I think DM should record a "Revisited" version, based on this. It would work just fine for the next album bonuses.
This is great but I also think that The sounds of the universe version is superb. In fact I really can't understand why people are so dismissive of that album as a whole. I think Depeche Mode fans have been so spoilt over the years that their expectations have become unrealistic.
I remember this early studio version was out a month before the album and I remember saying to myself if this is what the album as a whole is going to sound like its going to be fantastic. Then i get the album and the version of this song I heard.. I was so disappointed.. I felt so robbed.
I guess when Playing the Angel recording sessions started, Dave Gahan wanted some songs his way - "I Want it All" showed that Gahan was not a skilled writer. "Suffer Well" was redeemed for its industrial vibe. The only good shot was "Nothing Impossible" that was the final perfect product when you listen to the demo on SOTU. Violator formula worked so well: Gore writing songs, Wilder crafting them with such authority - the result was each member in their full potential. So with Alan Wilder gone from production and his mastery on turning good tunes into masterpieces, "Come Back", went through a lot of phases ending up into a chaotic way (endorsed by Ben Hillier) that pleased Dave Gahan. Gore must have thought "I hate being in these situations that call for diplomatic relations" -- because this tune, the original demo was something stellar. Anyways, SOTU is the weakest DM album in DM catalogue, unfortunately.
I heard an early rip of the album & this was the only song that was different on the final release....why oh why they chose that growling thing over this cut is beyond me...this is waaay more Mode imo

this is the song where overproduction made it better as a final product i can assure that
True. And I also think "Fragile tension" should have a completely remade chorus. It had such potential.
I prefer this version to the ALBUM VERSION any day! When I first heard SOTU I described as too noisey The entire was sadly over produced.
This was far better than the final version
This version, of course in my opinion, is much better than original version from the album.
It is, definitely !

SUPER :) my favourite COME BACK version
This is good. I also followed your link to the original version of come back, so good.
This was the version included in most digital downloads of the album, initially. A much better version.
I prefer this version
Best version!!!!!!!!!!!
Best version of this song. Still I'm wonder why they chose different version on album.

Yes, this was first leaked online. The deluxe version of SOTU has a demo too but it has additional sounds. I prefer this one.
