High difficulty seems to polarise audiences. Zelda II lovers adore the game for its high combat difficulty whereas haters loathe it for the exact same reason. I wonder if a mentality for acquiring skill through discipline divides these players
I don't think it's all about discipline. I personally play games because life is hard and I need a break doing something that is not hard. So I usually put my games anywhere from normal to easy. I used to play on hard mode and legendary modes and stuff. But.... I just want to escape and live the fantasy world and enter a new role. dollores, I disagree about it being the best, even though I liked so much about it. It did set the stage for so many future innovations that gamers love and adore. For instance the expanded sword skills from twilight princess would never have existed without inspiration from the excellent combat system of Zelda II.
Currently attempting to play all LoZ games according to the “timeline” and this is the one I just couldn’t beat. This is the exact video I was looking for to put my mind at ease with skipping this one!!
@@koichidignitythief7429 Well, duh. I'm older than Zelda 2. I'm just saying that from a story and lore standing the sages came first and the towns were named after them. There are also more towns than sages, with the two towns of Kasuto in particular being a mystery as to where the name comes from in the lore. Programming-wise there is no mystery at all. It's a name they used.
Was obsessed with this game as a child. It took me many years to finally beat it too. Allot more than it took me to finish the original Zelda...dark link was a total prick!!!
Well what happened to princess Zelda in the first game if this Zelda is an ancestor? I never understood the story lines after the first game and I grew up playing these in the 80's. I really enjoyed the cartoon series that came on Fridays on the Super Mario show in 1989
When I was young me and my older brother played this game alot, he manage to complete this game, I loved to see the princess wake up again, I was happy.
For many, Gooma (5th palace) is the 6th and last crystal, because you need to max out your lives there (falling brick room) before you go to the great palace.
Recently finished Breath of the Wild (Late, I know) and it was my first Zelda game so here I am trying to understand more of the Legend of Zelda's origins, stories, and lore. Thanks for the video!
This was the first Zelda game I ever played. It will always be special to me. Interestingly, the first time I played the original Legend of Zelda, I HATED it...seemed like a kid's game by comparison. I've grown to enjoy it as well...but I'll never like it as much as Zelda II.
Sadly this was glossed over in the review, but also, finding the hidden town when I was young with no help whatsoever for this entire game was pure adventurous joy
I enjoyed Zelda 2 a lot. I beat it when I was in the 5th grade. I never really got into the Zelda games after Zelda 1 and Zelda 2. The games in the 16-bit era and beyond were simply too complex. The same can be said about Metroid. I liked Metroid on the NES, because it was simple and easy to understand. But on the SNES and afterwards it was just too complex and wasn't fun.
Never beat this game as a kid. Was too hard for me. But I got great enjoyment of beating it on my NES MINI a couple years back. Great game. Never knew what I was doing with this game as a child. Yeah, I sucked haha. My fav part of this game is going thru the maze area towards the bottom left. Can’t remember what it’s called. I always enjoyed that area. Hard, but fun. Especially hard if you go there earlier in the game. If you build up a little bit it’s a bit easier. But that’s my fav part.
The Magic Key is NOT in Kasuto. You forgot to mention having to travel to the Hidden town of Kasuto that you clear a forest patch using the Hammer on the overworld map to find it and inside you get the Magic Key, The spell Spell, and a Magic Container.
Link literally just woke up some chick with the Triforce I'm not sure how he saved Hyrule by doing that. The game never said wake up zelda to save hyrule I mean saving it from who? Ganon's dead in this game
Fantastic game! Very difficult, but rewarding. I always liked to jump on top of roofs in the towns, use the jump spell to jump off screen, then turn into a fairy. It causes the game to glitch. Pretty fun. Lol
It was commercially successful and highly anticipated and regarded at the time of release. Anything else would be revisionist history. Besides, Nintendo did make a full sequel of Legend of Zelda on the NES, it's called "StarTropics".
That was a fun flashback to my childhood. This game to me was precious. I enjoyed it more than the first Zelda tenfold. Great video. Hats off to you. New subscriber. Peace!
Yea I always thought that the zelda in this game was just the main one just really unlucky getting trapped by Gannons forces to bring Link out so they could bring there boss back from the dead
I love Zelda 2. I've beaten all Zelda games to date, except those on the Philips CD-i system. While Zelda 2 is by far the easiest Zelda and one of the simplest NES games, it has always given me the most enjoyment. It was also the first game I ever completed back in 1988 when I was 9 years old.
I think link didn’t actually wake up the ancient Zelda, he freed her spirit and went on to live with the present Zelda. In uniting the Triforce he also purified it, allowing Gannon to not be restored for he was no longer bound to the Triforce of power. Impa then told link and Zelda of the sacred realm, and suggested they keep the Triforce there so it would not be misused. So they put the Triforce in the temple of light and sealed the door with the magial sword.
I thought this was going to be a backstory as to why the game was developed so radically different from the first, but either way I enjoyed it. Works as a decent "hands-off" guide for the game as well.
You forgot that there are two Kasutos. I'm referring to the part where you say Link get's the "spell" spell in the same town in which he learns "thunder".
Ridley369 do you know any other winged goddesses that aren’t part of a trinity? It’s hyrule, retconning it to Hylia makes more sense than all the towns being named for sages in a timeline that the hero of time lost to Ganondorf.
@@russellharrell2747 Actually, that makes perfect sense if you think about it. Link failed, so it was the Sages that stepped up to seal Gannon away into The Dark World, making them the famous heroes that get towns named after them and Link a nobody.
D. Snodgrass still strange how all those Hylian maidens in ALttP are the descendants of a Goron, Zora and kokiri, none of which resemble hylians too well.
@@russellharrell2747 Not really that weird as we dont even know if the sages that appeared in the imprisoning war are the same ones from OoT. Assuming they are different who wore cloaks then the maidens could be descending from them do. However descendants also come in many shapes and forms

Zelda II is the best Zelda game and it's a shame Nintendo is too afraid to take risks anymore.
Agree, especially with the taking risks part 😎
dollores, I disagree about it being the best, even though I liked so much about it.
Never realized the Seven Sages were named after these towns.
Other way around. The towns were named after the sages. Ocarina comes before this game in the timeline.
@@Voldine2 I'm talking about from the development side. Adventure of Link came out nearly a decade earlier.
Also, some of the enemies did to. Barba was a mistranslation of Volvagia, and Geldarms are Gerudarms.
I didn't realize some of the town names are also names for the sages from Ocarina of Time.
One of the best NES games ever and the most underrated soundtrack as well
The temple music, my fav soundtrack of all the games.
Late to the party here, but Bagu and Riverman album by DJ Cutman does a great job of remixing some of these songs.
I always wondered why when the three Triforces are used it actives your shield power
This is a very well done video for my faviorite Zelda game
Was obsessed with this game as a child. It took me many years to finally beat it too. Allot more than it took me to finish the original Zelda...dark link was a total prick!!!
I always wondered who the little old man who gives link the triforce was.
This was wonderful. Thank you.
Thank you!
Right on! I have SO many great memories of this one.
For many, Gooma (5th palace) is the 6th and last crystal, because you need to max out your lives there (falling brick room) before you go to the great palace.
Well worth the subscribe on this channel
So that's where the 3rd Piece was !
Recently finished Breath of the Wild (Late, I know) and it was my first Zelda game so here I am trying to understand more of the Legend of Zelda's origins, stories, and lore. Thanks for the video!
botw sucks balls
3:06 the art used here is by the artist Katsuya Terada! he's one of the most amazing zelda artists out there, so please check out his stuff
I have always found Zelda II to be > The Legend Of Zelda, who else agrees?
Kevin Lee You certainly are one of a few.
This was the first Zelda game I ever played. It will always be special to me. Interestingly, the first time I played the original Legend of Zelda, I HATED it...seemed like a kid's game by comparison. I've grown to enjoy it as well...but I'll never like it as much as Zelda II.
A few gripes, but the worst is that you get spell in the Hidden Town of Kasuto, which isn't the same Kasuto where you learn Thunder.
Sadly this was glossed over in the review, but also, finding the hidden town when I was young with no help whatsoever for this entire game was pure adventurous joy
Link to the past was your best video period.
In first 2 Zelda games, you are not fighting against the villains. %90 of the creatures were made by kingdom itself.
Great video! I love Zelda 2!
This is such a great series :D
Cadence of Hyrule in free beat mode is incredibly fun and addictive. Just hearing the old ost of past Zelda games in remix is awesome!
"Handy" glove...
amazing, do more please!
I have to say this video was excellent knowledge details and this game one time and you gave me flashbacks great job excellent video
@6:38 link: I found the kid .....hey you get back!!!
*Attacks*
Fantastic game! Very difficult, but rewarding. I always liked to jump on top of roofs in the towns, use the jump spell to jump off screen, then turn into a fairy. It causes the game to glitch. Pretty fun. Lol
Love these complete story things
It was commercially successful and highly anticipated and regarded at the time of release. Anything else would be revisionist history.
Besides, Nintendo did make a full sequel of Legend of Zelda on the NES, it's called "StarTropics".
That was a fun flashback to my childhood. This game to me was precious. I enjoyed it more than the first Zelda tenfold. Great video. Hats off to you. New subscriber. Peace!
Thanks for watching and subscribing!
Yea I always thought that the zelda in this game was just the main one just really unlucky getting trapped by Gannons forces to bring Link out so they could bring there boss back from the dead
Would've been better imo
That damn Thunderbird got me every time!
My favorite game of the series. Hard? Yes. Different than other Zeldas? Yes. Flawed? Yes. Don't care. Love it anyway. :)
Played this around 1990, don't think I ever heard the story before. Only, 'it's Zelda, but a different Zelda.'
This game was ahead of its time for sure and in meantime was kicking my ass😅
I love Zelda 2. I've beaten all Zelda games to date, except those on the Philips CD-i system. While Zelda 2 is by far the easiest Zelda and one of the simplest NES games, it has always given me the most enjoyment. It was also the first game I ever completed back in 1988 when I was 9 years old.
Zelda 2 is underrated
I think link didn’t actually wake up the ancient Zelda, he freed her spirit and went on to live with the present Zelda. In uniting the Triforce he also purified it, allowing Gannon to not be restored for he was no longer bound to the Triforce of power. Impa then told link and Zelda of the sacred realm, and suggested they keep the Triforce there so it would not be misused. So they put the Triforce in the temple of light and sealed the door with the magial sword.
Uh...did you watch the end, where she got off the bed and kissed him?
That’s a ghost kiss
Good breakdown, thanks.
Thanks John, glad you liked it
Great video, man.
6:27 Link, what a stud
I thought this was going to be a backstory as to why the game was developed so radically different from the first, but either way I enjoyed it. Works as a decent "hands-off" guide for the game as well.
You forgot that there are two Kasutos. I'm referring to the part where you say Link get's the "spell" spell in the same town in which he learns "thunder".
Subbed. Too tired but will binge watch tomorrow.
Love this game and this video was awesome!
love that nes ff7 music : )
Zelda II is amazing
The Trophy is actually an idol depicting a goddess, most likely Hylia.
Very doubtful that it's Hylia.
Zelda 2 is one of my favourite installments. Being a fan of the Wonder boy series, the side scrolling RPG style is my favourite, since not only can your stats help you, it's not some RNG luck, you can beat the game with no grinding.
Is it just me, or do this game's graphics remind anybody else of _Dragon Warrior?_ (the first one in the franchise)
