  • I recreate the golden spike for the 150th anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental rail road. I'm only about about 21 months late... the last couple of years have been hard on me ok.

So to answer common questions that I'm getting:
I went home and filmed getting the spike out then I showed how the spike fared. Once the weather cleared up I drove back out (to some random field in town not to promontory) and pounded it in. Then I chopped it out once again and filmed how the spike fared the second time. Apologies for making it unnecessarily confusing.
The weight of the spike after driving twice was 588 grams. Given the uncertainty in the scale it could be and probably is much less than a gram. Also most of the loss was from the 2nd time in the random field so please dont go trying to pan out the dirt at promontory.

You could conceal it even better by lowering the purity to 14k or 10k, but you would need more spikes. You could also make an alloy with copper, giving it a rose color. I feel like the best way to conceal gold is to make wire with it. Not only will it be hidden, but it makes a great conductor, so you can use it around the house for things like you’re speakers.
