I would enjoy hearing something a bit more about how you'd imagine yourself wearing it--seasons, times of day, occasions, moods, weather, in what company. I appreciate your extensive aesthetic assessments of the smell as smell, but it is after all made to be worn, so it would be very helpful to hear more on that score.

Interestingly, I don’t think we imagine fragrances in those terms so much. This is one of the reasons we do fewer seasonal lists, or any lists. Not that we don’t imagine wearing. We certainly do, and we talk about how they would make us feel, but we rarely think that these qualities restrict them to a certain environment or mood.

@@WaftsfromTheLoft I respect and understand that! It just causes me a bit of cognitive dissonance, though, that you praise some fragrances so highly yet rarely if ever comment directly "This is one I like to wear, this could be a regular if not 'signature scent' in my personal inventory," or, even, "While this is an exquisite fragrance, I couldn't wear it because it's just not 'me.'" (I have had that experience: "love it, can't wear it," as I imagine you have). I come away therefore with the impression that we are appreciating smells for the smells' sake, much as one would revel in (or not) the fragrances wafting from flowers in a garden, which is fine...except these aren't flowers in a garden but perfumes made for wearing. So that's the component I feel missing. I.e., would you wear it? Do you wear it? I'm not so fixated on the question of fine-tuning environments, occasions or seasons; I simply mentioned that as typical of the language in which people do indeed discuss these things, as helpful to imagining (as imagination is all we have to go on when discussing olfaction via a two-dimensional screen) how the fragrances would strike us.

We certainly do say when we enjoy a fragrance but wouldn’t wear it (there are a couple coming up where we say that!). We’ve certainly said in the past that a fragrance could be a signature scent (although, in reality, this is a complete impossibility). I suppose our approach to fragrance is not normal. I think of my collection as a library. Often I just dip in for reference. I might sit at my perfume cabinet and smell caps. Or settle down for the evening with a few bottles and test strips. Many of my favourite fragrances (and this is particularly the case with some of sultan Pasha’s attars) I enjoy most at home alone. I appreciate that this is not normal, and not to everyone’s taste. But we are just trying to be honest. It’s self-indulgence, really.

@@WaftsfromTheLoft 🙂 Well understood! I appreciate your taking the time to reply so thoughtfully! One I loved smelling but could never wear was Thomas De Monaco Raw Gold. I agree about signature-scent-impossibility. There is just too much out there to love to go "signature".

This particular fragrance is only to be worn August 12-18th between 5-9pm EST, while on a third date, if it includes dinner. In the Northern hemisphere of course.
      In the Southern h…😂🤣.
All jokes aside, I do know what you mean…

As soon as I smelled it, it took me straight to Chanel No 5 Parfum. It smells so similar to my nose. My mother still wears that version and this smells so close to that

That feeling of being silenced by a perfume is a rarity for me. But so satisfying. Almost like soul food. 🧡 On the other side of the spectrum, I sampled Hermes' new Un Jardin a Cythere today and what a flat, queasy flop. 😐 Like expired hand cream. Or playing a barfsichord. I think I just invented a new instrument. 🤢

Interesting that you guys said the osmanthus you tried smelled like stewed fruit. I have a french osmanthus absolute i got from a really reputable vendor and the smell for me as a sharp, very bright peach like floral. I always associated the smell with bright yellow beaming rays of sunshine.
