Hi Ian, the first car is an Opel Manta, probably a "400" (or at least the 400-trim), same platform as the Opel Ascona @ 8:03. This was not a bad platform at all - Walter Röhrl won his 2nd Worldchampionship in one of those against the mighty Audi Quattros in 1982. These Opel are still a popular platform because there are still a lot of parts around, they are easy to maintain and repair, AND some nice real-life hacks like makeshift 16V-heads (!!!) made out of 24V-heads for performance! I kid you not! Go to the scrapyard, find an Opel or Vauxhall Senator "B" 24V, take the head, CUT OFF the last 2 cylinders, plug the "surplus" Water- and Oil canals, regrind the camshafts, and there you go - >260 sturdy HP with the 2,4l-4cyl.-block. You don´t even need to buy the expensive historic Weber-DCOE-carburetors, the cheaper Dell´Ortos will do! Cost: Next to nothing!
If you see snow and darkness in Finland, that doesn't mean it was night. ;) You see, today the sun was above the horizon in the Helsinki area from 09:23 to 15:26 and Rovaniemi (around the Arctic Circle) had the sun three hours "above" the horizon from 10:52 to 13:52. Helsinki is approximately as north as Seward, Alaska. If Anchorage, Alaska was in Finland, it would be roughly a 70-minute drive from Helsinki using our winter speed limits (100 km/h) on the motorway.
Rally in the snow, in dark.. It's actually easier than in the summer, first of you have information of every corner and obstacles down to every 10 meters from the co driver. Regarding the winter conditions, we have had lots of snow since mid November here in all of Finland and this past week has seen very cold weather: around -20 degrees C (-4 F) here in southern Finland, in the north below -30 C (many places below -35), and the record for this winter so far is -38.7 C (-37.6 F) yesterday in Ylitornio. Also very cold in northern Sweden. Feels a bit like the north pole.

Falling into ditches: You get sucked in because, well, it depends on how far in you are, the angle, your car width and setup. But if the wheel out of the ditch loses traction and your car can't shift power away from that wheel then the differential send all the torque to the free wheel and now all your drive power is gone. It's usually the front of the car too so half your steering is gone as well. Then there's gravity pulling you down. If you're lucky you get a bit of streering when you're wheel hours the opposite side of the ditch, if you're lucky momentum climbs the ditch, levels the car and you get your power and steering back. Or you have enough steering to get the ditched wheel to climb the side next to the track and same effect, level the car and regain power and control. And that's all of you don't beach it on the edge. Mostly it's about having enough momentum going in get out again.
Even the hobbyist rally series is insane, my dad and his friend returned to the hobby after 20years and are almost back to their best. Winning many northern parts of the rally in senior class but losing some southern parts because those are alot straighter and faster bmw´s win on the straights but lose on the more challenging parts at the northen rallies
if you want to make a whole holiday out of it, i´d suggest going to Norrlandsveckan first up in northern Sweden (three Rallycross events). Then head to the Finnish World Rally Championship in Jväskylä Finland. in 2023 they also had a Legends race at the horserace track in Jyväskylä the same weekend. Somewhere near those dates there also a three days Folk Race(jokamies) racing event up in Pello which imo is the best folkrace event in Finland.
I started to learn how to drive on the ice of a lake when I was 16. I got my drivers licence when I was 18 years old. It was legal to drive on ice underaged without the licence back then in the 1980’s. I have to say those hours and experience on the ice with a Lada 1200 has saved me many times from spinning in the winter months on slippery roads. And I’m not afraid to drive in any weather conditions. The reason how a rally driver knows where to drive in the darkness of the night is that he/she has a ”map reader” go-driver who reads coordinates where the road goes during rally. A good go-driver is as important as the driver herself. 😊
0:53 opel manta, 02:32 toyota corrolla AE 86 (ultimate begginers drift car whic in good condition is almost impossible to find and good ones are priced astronomically high-great at handling for begginer drifters-only 100 HP), 03:14 Toyota starlet, 03:40 subaru justy, 05:02 ford fiesta, 7:33 honda civic, ....generally as european car guy- mostly only full throttle saves you on snow.😁
I remember when there was a Lada recall here 🇹🇹, can't remember the reason but some owners opted to repair them themselves. There was one painted champagne red, barely legal tint and nice rims and the owner was about his music so you'd hear it before seeing it!
Lots of different levels here mate. You've probably got many different groups and drive levels including front wheel drive, rear wheel drive and then the top levels with the All Wheel Drive. Fun to watch and a lot of skill involved no matter what the level.
Opel Manta used a lot in the 80s. RWD and couldn't stick to the big guns but cool car. Also fun fact: Hyundai Rally1 in the thumbnail like all three of them launches harder on a runway than an old V8 Red Bull F1 car. F1 car of course catches up and passes real quick. Proof on Red Bull's channel. Msport Ford used there instead of the Hyundai but same thing.
Finland is the cradle of great drivers. They learn from the age of 16 how to drive and race. No wonder. And it's air. Finnish air is clean and breathing is great there. Go there sometime, your lungs will feel the difference.
To be fair, a good part of the year, you don't have much of any choice but to drive at night in Finland. That far up north, a good chunk of the year a day is nothing but twilight hours and black of night.
If you like the older 2wd rally cars you must take a look at Tim Liljegren driving a yellow volvo 240 with around 290hp and also his teams volvo 940. He also competes in "folkrace" and he is a beast. Strangely enough, rally on snow is quite fast. With the right tires, the snow isn't that slippery, and because the walls of snow kinda keep you in track is you mess up the pilots don't hesitate to flat out. Mud is another animal though. ^^
Coming from the Austrian Alps, i never got how US americans can possible not LOVE to drive on snow. It' the only good thing on winter! :)) There's even a german commercial, where the guy with the Audi Quattro goes outside with his car key and sees the snow on his yard, takes a shovel and puts it from the yard on the melted driveway to make a solid Ice Rally track, before he drives away^^

Seriously - what motorsport could have that happen without actively killing spectators and possibly even drivers? F1? No. NASCAR? No. IndyCar? No. Touring Car?
I love how there is applause from audience and then there's sarcastic applause from audience.
Greetings from Finland! We are a Rally nation.
The King of Rallying Juha Kankkunen - with pure engine sounds. Check that out, pure gold
To be fair, a good part of the year, you don't have much of any choice but to drive at night in Finland.
That far up north, a good chunk of the year a day is nothing but twilight hours and black of night.
First car up is an Opel manta, I still run one of these in the UK, admittedly a resto mod with a 3.0 six in it now.
If you like the older 2wd rally cars you must take a look at Tim Liljegren driving a yellow volvo 240 with around 290hp and also his teams volvo 940. He also competes in "folkrace" and he is a beast. His videos are mostley in Swedish but the vids are amazing and how he can be at the top with the 240 is actually crazy.
Great english video about folk-racing: ua-cam.com/video/Cr1GdqIjqyU/v-deo.htmlsi=x81wBiY7wtXcJyQu
I have in 1997! With my BMW 318I (1986)on the "Randmeer". Driven. And of course also played! That is between the province of Utrecht and the province of Flevoland. I live in Spakenburg, the Utrecht side. And I just drove down the "DIJK". After I saw a Mercedes-Benz with a trailer driving on the ice. Truly a whole day of fun!
First car was a Opel manta its a German brand and this was a 80,s model
1:40 It's hard to tell.
There is a saying.
Finnish summer is short, but very little snow.
You a Scania guy? Bruce Wilson has some Scanias is the US somewhere in Florida I believe. He has a growing youtube channel too!
It's a Manta (Opel) - THE car in thee 80's for guys with their hair like front practical and rear beautiful^^
Hahaha! Great! Best description for a mullet i ever read!
@@Hartmut-oo5ts Adidas Jogging High, a mustage, rolled up trousers with white socks and a fox tail on the antenna also were a must for every Manta "pilot" 🤣
Last vehicle was music to my ears
Last one sounds like it has a motorcycle engine.
it does.
It was basically a quad bike with a plastic body.
First car is an open mantra. A version of the car is a cult legend in the N24 (watch one, its epic!)
A lot of old escorts in there, old evos and pretty much anything with wheels! I'm about 20 miles from Goodwood. Always welcome to crash on the sofa if you're ever over here for it!
Lol
4:24 There's another Škoda in the view, this time not on rubber wheels. The train in background was produced by the other Škoda brand, based in Pilsen (Škoda Transportation). But hey, for us, Czechs, it's Škoda after all
1st car was an opel Manta, you should look up Ari Vatanen "Dear God"
At the Nürburgring you are allowed to drive your private vehicle around the race track, there are many videos about this.
You can see lots of amazing old cars in Hillclimb events .
Hello my Friend👋🏻👋🏻. The car in the first minute is an Opel Manta, Europe-GM Brand.
There is an 2.0L(~122cubinch) atmospheric engine with approx 280-300 HP, it revs till 9’000 RPM.
Greats from Luxemburg 👍🏻👍🏻
7:20 LIINA PERSEESEEN! :D
8:10 I was wondering how long it's going to take until you stumble into Kartcross (there's also Rallycross... just saying...).
I kinda dig the Kartcross-Buggys, they look like a lot of fun - and seem to be relativly "cheap" (in comparison to other (dirt)racing...).
1st: Opel Manta B (Second generation Manta 1975-1988).
"Dam that was clean" Hayden Paddon (born 20 April 1987) is a New Zealand rally driver. He was PWRC world champion in 2011 and won the New Zealand Rally Championship in 2008, 2009, 2013, 2018 and 2021
I still would love it if you reacted to more Scandinavian classic (as in using classic cars) rallying. TONS on the 'Tube, especially from Sweden and Finland.
You should react to finnish 80s -90s rally, ive watched vhs finnish rally since i was 1 yr old and yet to this day it never fails to entertain
You should see the jumps, it is absolutely crazy to see flying rally cars
Have you done Rallycross yet?
hey i really enjoy your reaction vids about europe from an american perspective and i dont know how about others but Id like to see a video about the US and your car culture like idk maybe show us some nascar etc. thats something “exotic” to us and I think it would be an interesting idea for a video. all the best man
There's nothing better than sitting inbetween some trees 11 AM in the snow, with beer and a disposable bbq, watching a car flying by on roads ment for horse sleds every 15 minutes. AND, it's very likely to be a huge party in the town any rally ends in, with a whole chunk of people who started drinking way to early in the day 🙂 Just great events for every one.
1:39 It's regular Finnish summer day🥵🥶🤧😎🤣
I wish every team had Drone flyer back in the car trying to follow the car with camera to film it go.
You know it would require iron stomach to handle being blinded with first person goggles on trying to follow the car you are in feeling the G-Forces 🤣
First car Opel Manta, was kind of cult car in the 70s rear wheel drive coupe, even had a famous cult movie called Manta Manta!!! and one of them still competes at 24 hours of Nürburgring and has a lot of fans still
3:38 the Citroën in the clip 3:21 was a Citroën C2, i have owned one :)
has he heard about that one finish dude that is seen in countless rallies he runs upp to most accidents always first with a rope in hand. hes a legend. jimmy broadbent did a video on him " where ever this man goes, massive car crashes follows." he is in this video to has a funny hat on him. he is in this video to.
First car was a Opel Manta, oldtimer. I had one and i loved it.
The second "cool" car was a toyota corolla '80 model.
Love finnish ralllycars. They are just a little more extreme. Spesially the bmw's and the toyota's. You should check out Ilmo Lario's insane bmw m3 Rally car. 400 hp😮 10 000rpm😮. See the video Pirelli Bmw, Ilmo Lario do some heavy powersliding. And the sound is sick. 😊
Weird that a yank don't know a Sierra When he see one sliding by.
Creator JPeltsi has good compilations of finnish rally with a descent mix of new cars , classics , crashes and power slides.
That first car is opel manta, one of the most legendary rally cars
I find it funny how excited he gets over škoda when the brand is pretty much a common mans car.
0: 51 Opel Manta B ``european pony car´´
Judging by your face at that last exoskeleton car, you should really take a look at the Ariel Atom.
In fact, all small British sports cars.
Like a Triking Type 4.
Pembleton T24
The ultra low produced numbers kit like stuff.
I especially like the Triking, which, when taken to show off to Colin Chapman, was promptly atolen by Mario Andretti. 😂
After several hours he returned, Tony Divey, the designer and builder of said _prototype,_ was most glad it hadn't killed Mario.
The first car was opel manta, those were in group b also!
The many jokes we had about Skoda in my youth...
Why buy a Skoda when you can walk.
How to double the value of a Skoda? A full tank of gas.
Why are there heaters in the back window of a Skoda? To warm the hands of whomever is pushing it.
OK, that 7:22 "Liina perseeseen" caused me to spray my screen, luckily just water.
0:55 a legendary Opel Manta B
The first one is the Opel Manta B of the early 80. Second was Ford Escort Mk3 I guess - also from the 80s. Nothing fancy after all - but still rallyed on "Veteran" events.
it wasn't at night. although it was dark, it was a normal winter day in the north, the sun doesn't rise there
You asked "how they can see in night?" You really have to trust your co-driver and listen the notes you hear your co driver. Thats it!!!
If you make mistake you make mistake... then you are middle off the forrest or bottom on the hill or stuck on the snow... That's rally!
Finns begin driving still in dippers...
0:45 OPEL MANTA (maybye "400" )
The first car you didnt know is an Opel Manta from de 70s-80s, the second one is a Toyota AE86 levin, the therd one is an Opel/Vauxal kadet and the white hatchback yo misscalled as a Volvo is an Opel Corsa
7:27 - That's because no other motorsport allows the spectators to storm onto the race track.
Seriously - what motorsport could have that happen without actively killing spectators and possibly even drivers?
F1? No.
NASCAR? No.
IndyCar? No.
Touring Car? No.
You can do it in rally because it's not a simultaneous race, whereas almost all other motorsports have competitors race at the same time.
7.22 "Liina perseeseen!" I laught so hard that I started coughing and almost choked. Helping with such devotion.
What he says means roughly "pulling string in ass."
Speaking of rally, I can't seem to locate your first reaction to rally. The earliest videos I can find, seems to be the second or more reaction, because of what you said, and your reaction.
Maybe the first has been deleted, or just had its status set to hidden, or private.
"liina perseeseen, jeee"😂
Literally everything hits different in Finland 🇫🇮❤ no niin
Hey man you cracked the code finns come hearding when you talk about us😂it's rally tho it's deserved
Wanna find a new (old) car? Check out Datsun 1200. No longer manufactured but in Portugal they still race them
You should check out how rally snow tires look, you will be suprised 😅
Rally is race, where viewer can take part in race. Help racer to go on.
No clips of the crazy jumps? Finnish rally is all about air.
There is people with balls and then there is people with rally in snow and dark of night balls
Rally Sweden starts on the 15th of February.
love your face at the last one
Hello from Finland 🇫🇮
