Surface modelling is a technique in SolidWorks that allows you to manipulate the surface of a model. In this webcast, we learn how to do this by using lofts, sweeps and splines. The applications of this technique are countless - from consumer product design through to aerospace, surface modelling is a very powerful tool.

I know it's a few years old, but thank you for this excellent tutorial. Especially for making the reference images available, as this makes it possible to follow along and repeat your steps, pausing the video as-needed. An excellent way to learn and much appreciated.
only 18.5 minutes in and this has already filled in SOOOO many blanks.. thanks for posting this (over 5 years ago)
tried and couldn't complete this video tutorial last year. I'm back to give it another shot! #letsdothis
superb ! I've learnt so much, the single most informative video on solidworks I've ever watched. I'm sure I'll need to watch it multiple times though : it feels a long time till I can work my way through this stuff without help, yet you make it so clear and explain the "why" of each stage which is half the battle. thank you.
Brilliant video Adam. Thank you kindly. Very well explained.
Thanks for posting this over 11 years ago, you helped me a lot . A quality tutorial
This is one of the best SolidWorks videos that I have seen about surfaces. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
I've been searching long time for a good tutorial and I finally found it.Thanks bro !!!
The communication is beyond perfect. Thoughts conveyed effectively on how to model with in depth look at the commands. Overall, very good for beginners. Thanks
This tut was very helpful, had the most info to troubleshoot issues than any other video I've seen so far. Thanks
Very good tutorial with a good surface model example to go along with.
Great tutorial! It's especially helpful that you went over the way SolidWorks makes surfaces with UV curves. Knowing stuff like that can really save a lot of frustration.
Thank You! I am experienced in PTC Creo and now I need to translate my skills into Solidworks. This helps a lot.
How could someone give this a thumbs down? This is a great, in-depth, tutorial on surface modeling in SolidWorks that the creator did NOT have to share. I agree with the other comments. This is a great tutorial.
Outstanding. That's the best SW tutorial I've seen yet. Thanks.
Is the sixth time I'm watching this tutorial and still learning a lot. Thank you very much!
Thanks for explaining not just "how", but "why". Very well done!
I know this is Nine years ago now but thank you. I'm a design student who used solidworks a lot and I want to turn my sketches and blue foam models of a robot for my module into surface models 5 minutes in and I already learnt how to import images which is going to be critical to help me do this. Going to watch the rest of the tutorial now but thanks so much ♥️.
Absolutely the best tutorial I've seen yet!! Well done!
one of the best tutorial. kindly make individual tutorials to explain various surface features
great tutorial! Easy to follow and a great result. Keep up the great work!
This is a great video, I started hating SW becase it is not intuitive and the user experience is not very similar to other design programs, but with this explanation it is easy to understand why many people loves it. THANKS!
At 3.50 you’ll notice that I actually constructed two separate splines to produce the mouse outline, you may find this a little easier than drawing one and using Split Entities. I would recommend making sure that the sketch is hidden when you come to select the edges at 13.00.

Can you help me how to make it fully defined?
@@cridgemcking2471 for some reason they didn't show how to define it...
Very nice tutorial, this helped me so much!
Thank you so much! Finally a good SolidWorks tutorial
One good tip when you are doing the 3d sketch is to have a four view display! That way you don't have to change planes manually ! They are all there for you to see! Much easier
Thanks a lot, very clean and nice demonstration.
Not wasting time. I learnt a lot.
Thank you from America!
Great video, genuinely appreciate it!
Thaaaanks!!!! even in 2k19 you're helping people out. big thumbs up
Thank you very much for this video, it really helped me a lot.
Thanks a lot from the Netherlands. Very useful for my thesis.
So helpful to learn the surface tools, thanks!
A true master class in surfacing.
This is just awesome. Thank you so much for this tutorial!
2021. still super useful and relevant.
Awesome!!! I didn't knew I could add a loft section after I made it!!!
Dude, your video helped me model an ironman mask which was one of the best and most appreciated project in my engg. lab
Incredible tips, greatly appreciated
Very cool. I'm not sure how clean the surface intersections would be if you did a zebra view BUT the video touches on some really cool tools that I didn't even know existed!
you are the best man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
informative without wasting time
Thank you sir. it was exactly what I needed.
thanks for the webcast found it really good keep up the good work.
THANKS!!!!! Best tutorial for surface modeling.
Thanks! This is exactly what I was looking for!
This was great! could you please make one for SW 2021? I wonder if there are any new features and changes or if all this is still the same stuff.
Great tutorial, Thanks
Fantastic, what a treat! Thank-you for your time.
what a useful tutorial ! thanks. please keep adding new ones.
Great tutorial! It was easy to understand and a very good introduction to surfacing. On a side note, how do I make my solidworks look like yous? I mean in terms of having the reflection of the model on the bottom plane, having reflections on the part itself, and having selected faces glow blue. Thanks in advance!
Great video . It really helped me a lot
thanks a lot from sweden been struggling to do this before :)
Amazing work! Thank you so much
I just did it !! Wow it was really hard to understand at the begginning but happy to made it 😀
Excellent working loved it 👍
Hi Tow
The links in the description now link directly to the image.
Thanks

Great tutorial! I think you would have gotten a better, more accurate, line along the top silver sections by using a projected curve by combining a top view sketch and a right view sketch. Then turn it into a 3D sketch by using the convert entities function. :)
Excellent tutorial.
super useful, learned something new
Thank, it really nice clear to understand for beginner
10 years old and still holds up. not bad
I know this video's pretty old now but hoping you can help me here. How does the finished mouse look with zebra stripes enabled?
Working on a mouse myself and I need to have all surfaces perfect but despite following all of the tips in your video, I'm still seeing breaks in the zebra lines, specially at the mirror line of the two halves.
Still one of the best to start from
BEST TEACHER EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice work! i learned a lot from your videos. But can you build a Sq to Rd sheet metal transition in 4 pieces and seam at 4 corners ( .250 inch thick )
Is there a similar tool like "freestyle" which is used in catia present in solid edge ST8?
Awesome tutorial, thanks so much! :)
Thanks a lot from Turkey
amazing tutorial. Thank you very much
Awesome tutorial!!!
Great video, thanks!
Hello There.
I'm having difficult time closing the sketch into a planar surface as shown on 5:20.
After i've made the sketch and followed exactley on the outline of the mouse- i entered the planar surface selction- selected the sketch intended and the it does nothing, it simply stays on the planar surface selection area.
Can you help me with that, please?
Thank you.
Thank you from Tunisia
great tutorial, many thanks
Terrific tutorial!
Thaks a lot from Mexico.
You can now find links to the images used in the description.
this is an amazing tutorial on surfacing thank you, I'm just struggling to import the picture using the sketch picture tab its not usable to you have any advice or a way to bypass this feature to get the picture in to solidworks?
if you wanted one of those splines to be along a straight edge (in one plane ie a fixed distance from centerline but over a curve in another axis) for a certain distance but with all the curves up to that point nicely tangent . how would you do it? i cant find a way to do it without using a line section in between two splines then it wont loft using it .... there has to be a way!!!! am i taking the wrong approach? cant find anything like this anywhere
nice vid,it helped a lot thanks
Thanks for the upload
This is great sir adam rose
Hi, I don't know why but when i select any spline, I cant see the arrows, so I'm not able to play around with spline's curvature. Could you help me find out how to show the arrows? Thanks
for those whom the picture shows black colour after imported in Sledworks, try using snipping tool to save the picture as png and then import it,,cause default windows save is as gif which isnt supported by Sledworks
2014 makes this so much easier! Projected curve eliminates the 3D spline fiddling. Boundary is like a super loft. new spline types, and new functions :)
Chris Stavro its you again
the filled surface option is not available on the 2015 edition..... what is the solution to that?
and is there an alternative to that method?
You are welcome - have you checked out Ask the Experts playlist - lots of quick and very useful tips there
Very interesting, congratulations...:)

when I created the surface knit it did not separate the spline and did not have any constraints, I was wondering the reason for this?
i like these tuto!THX!
I'm trying this tutorial for the third time but i cannot seem to get the splines the same. I am having trouble with the first surface loft. It doesnt loft as in the video
This is one of the problems I had last time: I keep getting a gap between the horizontal and vertical sections on the mouse. it looks fine to the eye but when you really zoom in, they aren't joined. Trying to add relations doesn't seem to hack it... help?
very good , but how do you put the dimensions of drawing to be exactly at the piece or just with the picture ?
Great tutorial! The part at 28:48 doesn't work for me though. I couldn't create that loft myself.
your amazing.. respect.
Hi Luke, at 15.44 you deselect what seems to be an extra section in the loft, was this auto created within the feature?
Well done tutorial.
do you know how to do reflective surface when modelling? And how to do that blue bright selection ? someone pls shine me up.
honestly guys i think this is gonna work!
Thanks a lot, excellent!!
i cant seem to get the Loft at 28:39 there arent four sides to the boundaries. can someone pls explain!
