I know it's a few years old, but thank you for this excellent tutorial. Especially for making the reference images available, as this makes it possible to follow along and repeat your steps, pausing the video as-needed. An excellent way to learn and much appreciated.
How could someone give this a thumbs down? This is a great, in-depth, tutorial on surface modeling in SolidWorks that the creator did NOT have to share. I agree with the other comments. This is a great tutorial.
One good tip when you are doing the 3d sketch is to have a four view display! That way you don't have to change planes manually ! They are all there for you to see! Much easier
At 3.50 you’ll notice that I actually constructed two separate splines to produce the mouse outline, you may find this a little easier than drawing one and using Split Entities. I would recommend making sure that the sketch is hidden when you come to select the edges at 13.00.
Great tutorial! It's especially helpful that you went over the way SolidWorks makes surfaces with UV curves. Knowing stuff like that can really save a lot of frustration.
superb ! I've learnt so much, the single most informative video on solidworks I've ever watched. I'm sure I'll need to watch it multiple times though : it feels a long time till I can work my way through this stuff without help, yet you make it so clear and explain the "why" of each stage which is half the battle. thank you.
I know this is Nine years ago now but thank you. I'm a design student who used solidworks a lot and I want to turn my sketches and blue foam models of a robot for my module into surface models 5 minutes in and I already learnt how to import images which is going to be critical to help me do this. Going to watch the rest of the tutorial now but thanks so much ♥️.
Hello There. I'm having difficult time closing the sketch into a planar surface as shown on 5:20. After i've made the sketch and followed exactley on the outline of the mouse- i entered the planar surface selction- selected the sketch intended and the it does nothing, it simply stays on the planar surface selection area. Can you help me with that, please? Thank you.
The communication is beyond perfect. Thoughts conveyed effectively on how to model with in depth look at the commands. Overall, very good for beginners. Thanks
Very cool. I'm not sure how clean the surface intersections would be if you did a zebra view BUT the video touches on some really cool tools that I didn't even know existed!
How exactly did you create a midpoint relationship with the right surface plane and and the second line plane 6:24... Im not that fluent in solidworks just trying to learn a little more for my upcoming project
This is a great video, I started hating SW becase it is not intuitive and the user experience is not very similar to other design programs, but with this explanation it is easy to understand why many people loves it. THANKS!
this is an amazing tutorial on surfacing thank you, I'm just struggling to import the picture using the sketch picture tab its not usable to you have any advice or a way to bypass this feature to get the picture in to solidworks?
I was unable to perform the boundary surface at 22:50 because I wasn't able to select the splines from the original planer surfaces. SW only allowed me to select the entire closed loop around those planer surfaces which results in an error message. What am I doing wrong, how do I only select the curve that I want?
You may be selecting the sketch which created the planar surface. Make sure this is hidden before you attempt the boundary surface. If your still having trouble try Right clicking in the graphics area to bring up the selection manager, this tool will allow you to select individual sections of an edge -setting this to select group (cursor symbol) often works best.
I'm trying this tutorial for the third time but i cannot seem to get the splines the same. I am having trouble with the first surface loft. It doesnt loft as in the video
for those whom the picture shows black colour after imported in Sledworks, try using snipping tool to save the picture as png and then import it,,cause default windows save is as gif which isnt supported by Sledworks
Someone please help ASAP! How did you split the spline into two elements and used the loft tool @13:09. I Have tried using the split entities tool but whenever i tired to use the loft feature it selects the small element at first and then it re selects the whole spline.
I've just got it. It is not necessarily matter of splitting the spline. Try first to hide the sketch (in the history tree, eye or glasses sign) from which you made the plane and then use SURFACE BORDER element (as in the video - author picks a line, that is called "SURFACE-PLANE1") not a line from the sketch ... I hope this trick works for you ;)
Hi, nice tutorial but me not able to do this, this splines are totaly working against me, i cant get the splines in the right position as you did, i also tried to get splines to loft together but this also didnt work for me, i have no idea what im doing wrong.
I try to split the vertical surface at the location of 3D curve, but somehow i am unable to select the short line needed for the surface loft ( at around 13:30). Anyone that can help? I can see the short line, but once I click it it selects the whole vertical surface.
Same happens with me, im using Solid 2014, i dont know if that have anything to do with the problem maybe it worked with older versions, i dont know...
if you wanted one of those splines to be along a straight edge (in one plane ie a fixed distance from centerline but over a curve in another axis) for a certain distance but with all the curves up to that point nicely tangent . how would you do it? i cant find a way to do it without using a line section in between two splines then it wont loft using it .... there has to be a way!!!! am i taking the wrong approach? cant find anything like this anywhere
Hi, I don't know why but when i select any spline, I cant see the arrows, so I'm not able to play around with spline's curvature. Could you help me find out how to show the arrows? Thanks
I could not get to merge the half body, resulting in not being able to merge at the end of the process! The option to merge was not available. Could anyone advise how to fix this issue?
2014 makes this so much easier! Projected curve eliminates the 3D spline fiddling. Boundary is like a super loft. new spline types, and new functions :)
Great tutorial! It was easy to understand and a very good introduction to surfacing. On a side note, how do I make my solidworks look like yous? I mean in terms of having the reflection of the model on the bottom plane, having reflections on the part itself, and having selected faces glow blue. Thanks in advance!
I know this video's pretty old now but hoping you can help me here. How does the finished mouse look with zebra stripes enabled? Working on a mouse myself and I need to have all surfaces perfect but despite following all of the tips in your video, I'm still seeing breaks in the zebra lines, specially at the mirror line of the two halves.
This is one of the problems I had last time: I keep getting a gap between the horizontal and vertical sections on the mouse. it looks fine to the eye but when you really zoom in, they aren't joined. Trying to add relations doesn't seem to hack it... help?
Within the same sketch he drew 2 separate spline lines. To do this, you draw the first one, then deselect (switch tools or something, but don't exit sketch). Then draw the second spline by drawing with splines again.
That last Loft didn't work for me at all. I selected the two top edges as the path, and the 3D sketch, the flat face as the guide curves and I couldn't do the loft.
Well,it is basically a 3D curve which you can control in X,Y and Z direction, unlike in 2D sketches. You see when he changes the view at 7:28 to top view so he can control it without messing it up in other directions, you can quickly change the views by pressing space bar :)

only 18.5 minutes in and this has already filled in SOOOO many blanks.. thanks for posting this (over 5 years ago)
Thanks for posting this over 11 years ago, you helped me a lot . A quality tutorial
tried and couldn't complete this video tutorial last year. I'm back to give it another shot! #letsdothis

Outstanding. That's the best SW tutorial I've seen yet. Thanks.

Very good tutorial with a good surface model example to go along with.
Hey, please help me. At 13 minutes, he says that we need to separate the entities, but I’m unable to do it.
Could someone briefly explain it to me ?
Hi Luke, at 15.44 you deselect what seems to be an extra section in the loft, was this auto created within the feature?
Great tutorial! The part at 28:48 doesn't work for me though. I couldn't create that loft myself.
