SOLIDWORKS Tutorial - Surfacing for SolidModeling

  • Repost of a recorded webinar entitled surfacing for solid modelers. This video is an introduction to surfacing features that can augment existing solid modeling practices. This will explain some theory behind these tools along with providing practical examples of how to use these to features to easily obtain more complex geometry. Some of the functionalities demonstrated are how to create surface bodies from solid bodies, how to repair imported geometry and how to augment solid features with surface bodies.

    Found this super useful. I really like the method of presenting: a heads up summary of the operations followed by the actual execution in SW. Previously I have tended to use the surface tools in isolation (on surfaces!). But this video has reminded me in a neat wat to start using the surface tools WITH the solid model.

    Lot of things i have learned pls make a detail video on faucet ( water tap, wall mixer ) with core and body genration. Really need it.

    Very useful video, thanks. At 32.38 you can use the command 'convert to style spline'. Can be easier than starting with a style spline.

    How come you don't have the SolidWorks files you used available for download so that we can go through the feature tree on our own time to dissect how you did the Tupperware, for example? It's super easy to share files on UA-cam. If you use dropbox, simply change the end of the URL from =0 to =1.
    Could you please get back to me on whether you'll be sharing the SW files with us in this and future vids? We really need them to fully master what you're teaching.

    Apart from all the tips, this video *looks* great. As a SW newbie, may I ask what graphics/display settings you use?

      Hey Frank, we typically run NVIDIA Quadro graphics cards and their default settings.

    I really like this guy for many reasons, but this is my problem. I sort of feel like a first semester calculus student who walked into a third semester calculus class by accident. I have just enough understanding of what can be done, but not enough background knowledge to truly understand how he gets to where is wants to go with each lesson even after three entry level classes in SolidWorks. At my age I can't justify paying for classes as I am retired and have no plans to ever try and recover training costs for SolidWorks classes, but again it is grand to see there are people who truly understand the abilities of SolidWorks and how to use them.

    What rendering software did you use for the slideshow images between demonstrations?

      Those images weren’t just made in a rendering software. We made those renders using a combination of several different renders made in Photoview 360 combined inside of photoshop.
      All of the highlighting was also done inside of photoshop.

    Min 21:10 That doesn't make sense. How can you get the internal volume? That's simply the remaining budy that's left after the intersect. It's not telling you how much liquid is inside (volume) the bottle at the water level (plane level). Need clarification on the "create internal regions" command of intersect, please.

      For SOLIDWORKS “Create Internal Regions” in Intersect, it displays and creates an internal region from a closed (hollow) volume within the intersection of the objects. So in our case the hollow volume is the empty internal space of the bottle and the intersecting objects are the body of the bottle and the water level plane that I’ve added into the model.
      Now that you’ve created a body representing the internal volume of your model you can use “Mass Properties” on the evaluate tab to evaluate the properties of that particular body.
      This will give you the internal volume.
