  • Death. Desire. Power. Scandal.
This is the true story of the family that almost ruled England.
    THE HOUSE OF DUDLEY
    Dr Joanne Paul
    31st March 2022 | hardback | £25 | 9780241349823
‘Brimming with power struggles, ambition and intrigue, this is the untold story of one of the most notorious families of the Tudor era. A spectacular achievement’
Nicola Tallis, critically-acclaimed author of 'Uncrowned Queen: The Fateful Life of Margaret Beaufort, Tudor Matriarch'
‘Absorbing, meticulously researched and expertly executed’ Lindsey Fitzharris, author of 'The Butchering Art'
Every Tudor monarch made their name with a Dudley by their side - or by crushing one beneath their feet.
The Dudleys thrived at the court of Henry VII, but were sacrificed for the popularity of Henry VIII. Rising to prominence in the reign of Edward VI, they lost it all by advancing Jane Grey to the throne over Mary I. Under Elizabeth I, the family were once again at the centre of power. This time, they would do anything to remain there...
With three generations of executed favourites, what caused this family to keep rising so high and falling so low?
The story of the Dudleys is the real-life Tudor Succession. This is the first ever biography of this ruthless, fascinating clan - and in using this family as a prism for the Tudor world, Dr Paul challenges our perception of the most treacherous decades in English history.
♛ Dr Joanne Paul is a Renaissance and Early Modern Historian at the University of Sussex. In 2017, she was selected to be one of ten BBC/AHRC New Generation Thinkers: the next generation of leading arts and humanities researchers.
♛ She has appeared on BBC Four, BBC Two, BBC Radio 3, and BBC Radio 4, as well as writing for BBC History Magazine, History Today and Prospect .
♛ In The House of Dudley, she has drawn on overlooked archival materials and uncovered documents that revealed lesser-known members of the family, particularly women, to cast the whole family - and their history-making impact - in new light.
♛ Dr Paul is based in Sussex and available for feature writing and interviews.
