Why does UA-cam not have a Direct Message or DM? We have that on TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and even LinkedIn! Content Creators on UA-cam are missing out on a lot of business opportunities and revenue because of this.

Hi Kevin, UA-cam did have a DM feature when they first began. It was taken out due to spam and harassment reasons. Hope this helps.
God forbid.
We don't want DM.
Not everyone do social media
for UA-camrs running YT as a business, it sure is helpful. Maybe YT can add a toggle button
Lol
No I don't want it 😂
I'm a creator too but Don't want
Ah
God forbid
@@marksport3829 😅
@@KevinChee You have point. May be for Brand UA-cam Channels/accounts. Not for personal accounts and even provide opt-out.
There were DMs in the early days, and I remember a similar feature between 2017 and 2019. I’d love to have DMs again, but given that UA-cam is unable to control bots in the comments after all these years, I can imagine it would make things more difficult.
It's about time they create a new one that they can manage
I agree. It's like a missing link. I have no time to keep up with IG. The only thing I could think of is people DMing instead of commenting and how it could impact engagement.
It really would, I like that the support isn’t so intimate because other platforms the engagement comes more through DMs and that can’t be monetized. DMs would ruin monetization on UA-cam
FB & IG both have comments and DM and they work well. I think by now people are used to knowing the difference between comment and DM. The DMs I got so far has been from people who really wanted to ask a genuine question and get some directions through continuous conversation
Oh god please no. It'll be filled with bot scams
not as big of a problem as missing good opportunities I reckon
We already have plenty of those in the comments anyways. Plus, DM spam messages get filtered out quote easily on most sites, so I don't think it'd be a big issue.
Hi Kevin! I'm one of your newsletter subscribers & have been enjoying your content there! Glad you did this video, too, and loved your opening. You're right about this problem with YT. The other thing that's good about starting a newsletter is that you, the content creator, own it (not YT). So if YT ever goes down/changes things, and horror, demonitizes you, you're still in control of your newsletter. Lately, I've been writing YT gurus that I follow to just say hi and thank them for a particular video or newsletter idea they shared with us for free. I've emailed them, & with you, I wrote you in your community tab (thanks for writing back). I've been thrilled that they actually write me back. It is the best feeling!!! YT can be lonely, but it feels amazing when your favorite channel creators write back to you. It is so uplifting and encouraging. I'm starting a newsletter, so I'll check out kit to see the features. Please do a similar future video on how to use instagram wisely to promote your YT channel/business. I don't follow that platform but I'd benefit from knowing more!
I'd definitely share more about IG once I give it a try more myself. My IG account is pretty stagnant with no content updates but it has always been something at the back of my head. I have watch a couple of UA-camrs having success on both IG and YT if they run it as a business. If you're just after views and subs though then sticking to UA-cam would be my preference.
@@KevinChee Actually, if I ever used IG, (which I probably won't right now as YT is hard enough), I'd just want to pull people from IG over to YT. Perhaps we could take content from our community posts and repurpose it over on IG (with some new insights) to get a community following that might come in to see our YT videos or join our newsletters? Something like that?
Wish I could upvote this! Totally agree.
A like would suffice, thanks!
I totally agree about managing comments. I would really like a "Mark as Read" feature so I can clear out comments in my dashboard that don't need a reply. And the "replies-to-replies" are definitely the hardest type of comment to keep track of.
If you press the heart button, it serves as the mark as read feature. The replies to replies are definitely annoying since they don't show up in the comments space.
@@shelina_virjee Yes, the Heart button is basically what I use for "Mark as Read." But I would like a pure way to do it. Ideally, I'd like to keep the hearts for exceptional comments.
@@TechnicallyTrent Me too. Sometimes I have to heart comments I don't agree with just to make them go away.
Yeah, the 'heart' button loses its appeal if we heart every comment. You can actually see replies-to-replies in the comment section in YT analytics. Just change the filter to 'Responses with new replies' and they will appear (hopefully). But they are still hard to manage imo
Its definitely intentionally not there. Because we had that feature years ago and they took it away. UA-cam has a long history of adding features nobody wants (Google+, shorts) and taking away features everybody wants (dm, dislikes)
I think they have to bring it back or they are missing out on a lot of traffic. My guess is they have yet to fix the comments glitches.
Creator DMs would be amazing.
I can find tons of use for it
I believe UA-cam used to have this feature years ago. If they had IM, the mailboxes of channels would be crazy huge. Still wouldn't have time to go through them all.
They probably have to sort out their bot issues first
Thanks for guiding us through. I’m still in the progress of setting up other platforms as I need some help from my husband for some technical stuff.
I’m so inspired by your progress and evolvement. It also has helped me to review my own future planning. There are so many things that we cannot control within YT, yet, we could think of other ways to make our plans work.
Keep up your good work!
That's awesome. Setting up a newsletter is quite straightforward. Hope this video helps.
Yes, YT needs a DM or they look for a way to link up our email as a tab so that your audience could send you a DM through that means because YT is the only platform I use.
that's a good idea, to have a tab that allows viewers to email us directly. we can control our spam through our email client.
I plan to start an email newsletter soon; it's a great way to stay in touch. Interesting video!!
It is a great way to keep in touch with the community we build. I have more personal conversation with my community through IG DM and email but can't do it on UA-cam.
0:28 Years ago, UA-cam had direct messaging, but they took it away. I wish they would bring it back.
maybe they found a lot of issues with comments that needs to be fix first
@@KevinChee Yeah, I remember messages being a thing on YT but they were hidden so deep in the UI that I would never remember to check them and once I did, I'd find messages over a year old.
Completely agree!!
100%
I was curious what this was all about since there are so many features coming to YT. It's probably because some content creators don't want to be messaged, so it's best just to leave an email. I can also see why you'd want it.
if they want to leave an email, the viewer needs to contact them directly too which means looking up the channels' email then opening up your own personal email client, compose the email and send. It sounds simple but it does not represent a good user experience which prevents viewers from doing so.
Nobody comments on my videos so it's very simple for me to keep track of lol
You will get comments soon
@@KevinChee 🙂
Good info, I have tiktok and my DM is always full of scammers, but it would probably be a good idea.
1 of the reason I don't focus so much on TikTok is the demographic there isn't right for me. TikTok feels to me like a place where it is pure entertainment and conversion to potential customer is low.
Ironically , i think they don't want viewers to leave UA-cam , meaning they want viewers to stick to the content not engage with creator, unlike other short video platform
They definitely want viewers to stick around but they aren't doing a good job at retaining a portion of those viewers. UA-cam has a lot to do to get up to speed.
I never use the comment function in Google analytics. The UA-cam app is better, I just go through my notifications, that also shows me replies. But I always worry I missed someone.
The notification on the app works the same, it doesn't show every reply either
@@KevinChee well at least it shows me replies in the same flow as new comments. I highly dislike the way it is in youtube studio.
it would probably reduce account hacks too, because it'd be easier to verify if the message is legitimate or not
that is something UA-cam is having big trouble with, verifying legit accounts. maybe that's why they don't have this feature still
Sounds like great advice.
( doesn't really apply to may channel because it is too small...but I like the tech. tHanks for the video )
you should start thinking about it and have those links on your videos no matter how small your channel is. I have a video that took of 1.5 years later and I did not have my sign up link on that video. Imagine how many potential conversion I missed.
If I'm not mistaken, UA-cam used to have DM back in the days.
lots of people said they do. I wonder if it is because YT is having trouble containing bots and spams so they took it away.
I get some comments pop up in studio where others pop up in my regular UA-cam app 🤷
They are strange indeed
💯facts and truth, YT needs a DM. I do not have IG, FB or TikTok and have no plans on opening those in the future.
we are missing out a lot if there's no personal communication
I’m with you about this terribly missing feature on YT. It really seems like a no brainer… why is it still not here?
Re replies, the worst ones for me are replies to replies. They are so hard to find within studio. Why can’t all comments - new or replies - not appear automatically at the top? Is that so hard to do? Twitter does it FGS!
Great tip about the newsletter. I think I won’t get to 10,000 within my lifetime so it’s win win for me! 🤣
You can see replies-to-replies by changing the filter in your comment section from 'I haven't responded' to 'Responses with new replies'. It is as close as it can get but still a mess to me
@@KevinChee Case in point: I just received a comment on a view I published over a year ago - can't find it anywhere, so can't respond...
Im suprised that u havent try make discord server, I think its much easier to send stuff there than on instagram or whatever. You can always talk in dm, or just on discord chat, easy and fun place for discussions (but also place for scammers asking to sign in on their crypto platform lol)
I did but my viewers aren't discord savvy.
Yes I agree, very good points Kevin. Hope you are going well. Almost a new year hey.
Yeap.. the year is almost over. This is the time of the year to start planning for 2025
This is a useful topic by the way, cool that you decided to make a vid about it
Thanks, more to come
Great video Kevin I agree DMs would help me on youtube. Do you know how to upload the new 3 min shorts? I can't figure it out,it would be a great video for you could get good views I think.
I think you just upload a vertical video under 3 mins and it will automatically detect it as Shorts. I think it just launched but not sure if it officially live yet. I am thinking about getting back into Shorts but probably repurpose my long form videos instead. Will see how it goes.
@@KevinChee thanks for answering
I just want to say I really enjoy your channel. My channel is small soon to cross the 500 threshold! Wish me luck! Anyways, I just wanted to say please take care of yourself first man...
good luck!
I'll get a notification someone liked or replied to a comment and I'll tap it and there will be no like or reply??? Like, a lot. Is broken.
Indeed! I have even tried checking one day or a few days later, but still not showing! It is frustrating.
Yeah, I had that too. They are not marked as spam or anything, they just disappear
Thanks 🙂👍
No problem 👍
@@KevinChee as always, thanks for replying 👍. And yes, I feel you. I feel like the replies and comments get lost on my channels all the time. 🤣
I think it would help if content creators could use flags on comments on their channels, that only they can see. Then they can search using those flags. That would be easier for the creator for management.
oh, like some sort of tag? That's a good idea
Thanks for sharing. Have a great day. 122 likes 👍
Thank you !
A DM feature would be very useful
I'd love to have personal conversation with some of you!
@@KevinChee Agreed
agree it's not good. comments are old school. we need dm feature great video. listen to this guy He helped me get to where am. excellent content.
I reckon I will go even further with DMs on UA-cam!
Present Mr Chee🎉
let's do this
I usually make one comment and sometimes I would like to reply more but I understand it is to much time for the content creator to reply to every single person so I mostly leave it at that one comment. It is too much of a strain on a content creator. This definitely needs to be addressed more seriously. Sometimes two sides would like to talk more so you are more and less forced to drive this to other platforms and as you said have more control.
exactly. sometimes I get better feedback from my DM and even business opportunities. I don't even know how many opportunities I missed due to unseen comments
Its instagram worth it on 2024 Kevin?
recently I saw a video by Alex Hormozi where he broke down all the platforms he uses for business. Interestingly, the 2 large business driver for him are IG and YT. I think IG still has a huge appeal but it requires a lot of posting to get noticed. I do plan to use it again if I can come up with some sort of process and system for it. My aim is to gain conversion though so I'm not doing it for more views and subs/followers
You’re so right. Dm would be awesome here
for sure!
$0 for email addresses until I reach 10,000 subscribers is nice. Thanks for sharing.
it certainly is!
Just a quick check at the adsense page and you're thrown back to the early 1990s, but with an ugly 2024 user interface. That's how backwards and un-sophisticated youtube is.
sometimes simplicity works best :)
DM's could prove fatal, you'd be bombarded day and night with comments and then DM's, you'd need to hire a VA 😂 But yeah at this stage every big social media platform are just copying each other so I'd imagine some day DM's will be introduced!
You will be bombarded but at least we can keep track of them easily. Content creators can always ignore the ones that are just spam bots. It is still better than relying on comments.
Nobody searches for “Best vacuum cleaner in 2022” do they? Yet, UA-cam will show you every video since the dawn of UA-cam. Eventually they’ll run out of room to host all these irrelevant videos.
You'll be surprise how much storage they have!
interesting points made 💯💯💯💯💯💯👏🏼👏🏼
thank you!

Yup, true.
The audience belongs to UA-cam, not you.
Sounds like UA-cam is winning all the way
Useful

@@KevinChee Yes kevin
Don't want dm 😂
yes to dm 😂
@@KevinChee lol 😂
No to dm
But Sha I've been following your channel for long now and I love your contents too
I would like if a dm was put so personal communication was possible too
It still might be nice but it would make UA-cam feel like a social media kind of platform
@@marksport3829 would be nice to have a nice personal conversation with you
@@KevinChee yeah
Same
Is it possible I can get a personal social media for better conversation
I like to tell you something I would love your advice on it
Ask your subscribers to provide you their direct email address.
that's one way but they'll need to leave their email address in the comments for public viewing, which isn't a smart choice.
@@KevinChee simply provide a google voice number....and stay anonymous....I worked for google twice
UA-cam is a google product......communicate with google voice if you're that paranoid
@@KevinCheeUA-camrs all the time and people in general all the time provide their email address for public view......if a person is that paranoid...they shouldn't be on social media..........anyone that has a UA-cam account can easily locate the owners gmail account....all they have to do is
navigate to their 'About' section. This section often contains contact information, including an email
☺️☺️
🙂
This is why I do not like to comment anything to a famous content creator unless it is alux
And for me, I do not like to ask my viewers, or subscribers, to comment under my videos
how do you engage with them then?
❤@@KevinChee ❤ by making videos that the viewers love without asking the viewers to like, comment, or subscribe,
the reason why I am doing that it is because I do not feel comfortable, asking for anyone online for help to me
I feel like this is begging the viewers for help and I do not like to do that with anyone online it makes me feel so uncomfortable.

I wonder if the new communities feature UA-cam are rolling out will have some kind of DM feature? I agree its really hard to talk directly to people, the comments are a hot mess for a popular video. Loving your videos Kevin btw
I don't see any DM feature in the new Communities. If anything, it is just a revamp of community wall and comments all jumbled up into one. It looks just like scrolling through IG/FB.
