The Motor Just Isnt Running Right 4K

When we got this 1974 Vw beetle, it ran. But its got a misfire and its not quite running right. So my father has had air cooled engines for years ( he's got a thing for VW) and the moment the car was home and in the air he wanted to check out the engine. The story we had got when purchasing the car was that the engine was freshly rebuilt and was just installed about 6 months ago. The engine was sent out to a VW specialist in USA to rebuild it. So we assumed it was all good. Just from sitting we thought possibly the fuel or just needed some adjustments.
But it turns out that's not the case. Everything was purchased for this motor and was assembled in Cobalt at a shop. I did some digging around, asked some neighbours and they all told me the same story. The car was a parade car for the local legion, This legion wanted to restore the car about 10 years back so they sent it to a local shop. This local shop brought the car back to life, they did not install the engine though. Before the car was finished it was purchased by a private owner. This is the guy who I purchased it from. He was given all the engine pieces in a box. He installed them himself in his garage. SO Long story short, we are going to do a full teardown as the compression ratios are way off and things are installed incorrectly. Not a massive deal , I want to learn more about these engines as I have a few and need to do some work to them. So this is just good practice

When tightening fan belt there is a notch on generator pully to stick a screw driver into and stop the pulley turning.

Low compression & uneven compression could be from bad valve adjustment, head to jugs leakage and Hopefully not cylinder wall damage.
