  • Here is my Chevrolet 2001 ZR2 blazer project that I’m starting. This is a cool little truck and is based off of the S10 platform. It has live axle, with Leigh Springs, 31x10.50 bfg Goodrich tires and stock 3” lift kit!!! The torsion bars are raised slightly and it has the 4.3 Vortec engine.

Several years ago I had the chance to get one of these ZR2s with the very rare 5 speed option. It was one seriously sweet ride.

4 button transfer case. NP236. Uses special fluid.
Also, pretty sure no one makes a 6" lift kit for these anymore (front fame is different then a regular blazer). The after market for the ZR2s was always small, and now its pretty much non-existent.
Vacumm actuator on the front diff can be a problem. You can get rid of it completely using the front axle tube and shaft off an Olds Bravada (98+ in your case). Or a cable kit, that works to.

not all are the 4 button. if you're going 6 inches or more you might as well go SAS in the front so kind of pointless on "kits".

Just found me a 03 Sonoma zr2 with 130k. Test drove it and settled on a deal. I was originally looking for a 4x4 s10 but ppl were asking so much for them with over 180k. But once I seen a few zr2s I did my research and much rather have that. Stronger driveline and suspension and notice quit a bit of ppl LS swap these and sounds like a fun future project with my dad in a few years

I bought one new in Red in 03 the last year they made that body style I loved it because I live in Ohio and it handled the snow like a champ, the zr2 came with factory 3.73 gears and a limited slip in the rear. I sold it in 2015 with 180k miles and it was still running strong

ZR2 equipped pickups and Blazers were little beasts. Awesome project! I don’t like the torsion bars being cranked on these rigs. The highrider “Jackrabbit” rake is what gave these ole trucks that cool look in my opinion. Always liked the stance of the rear sitting a little higher than the front. Just looks more aggressive I guess lol. Cool friggin Blazer bud!

Awesome score! Right now these ZR2 models are coming to the end of that “affordable window”…. the window is quickly closing shut. Prices will skyrocket on these over the next 5-10 years, so now is the time to scoop them up before $$$$$

@@FireballMullet I remember raising them to be easy and a driveway project. I was on safety with jacks & stands.
My nephew said you adjust the bolts on a cross member. He said Goodyear stores are a place to start if it has old mechanics. It's going to need an alignment anyway so they should help.

I’ve got an 03 in the driveway. We bought it for my son as his first car in 2017. It somehow survived and has 147k on the odometer. I just did a full tuneup on it but like you, the steering needs attention and it has an oil pan leak. It’s too nice to give up on though so it’ll be my summer project. Congrats on your new ride.

I have a 2000 ZR2 blazer with a 5 speed. Look into replacing the power seat with the manual one available in the S10. When the switch goes bad, you will come out to a dead battery unless you cut power to the switch

Grab the new improved Dorman 4x4 actuator that's located under the battery. They have a heavy duty one that O'Reilly's sells. Very thick rubber. I went through 6 on mine in 2yrs.
I bought an 02' Blazer ZR2 LS 7yrs ago with 300k miles & she runs better than my Wife's new Ford Escape XLT non-hybrid.
Bought mine here in Houston no rust, showroom condition.
    He kept in his garage.
Cold A/C, No one ever sat in the rear seats, new tranny, new water pump, way too much to list on 32's, new cat, original beautiful tan paint/ black trim paint. New ignition system, OMG, I could go on & on. 4.3 Vortec is a nice runner. The Sunshield snaps easily in the stock tranny.
I may sell it but she's still getting the sticker mpg. I've got some money in mine. Paid $3k for her

Looks awesome. How much you paid for it? You don’t see too many of these for sale in decent condition nowadays. I’ve been looking at one that’s for sale, it’s just like yours but black and has about 150k miles, but they seem to be asking a lot for it. But they have done a lot of recent maintenance and part replacements including the door hinges lol I’ve been going back and forth for months debating on whether I should buy it or not.
