  • Qatar have reportedly entered advanced negotiations to host World Rugby’s Nations Championship finals with Six Nations Rugby and SANZAAR. The biennial tournament is set to begin in 2026 with a top division of 12 teams (the Six Nations unions, SANZAAR unions and two further unions) and a second division, run by World Rugby, consisting of a further 12 nations.
The proposal includes guarantees of £800 million in revenue for Six Nations Rugby and SANZAAR for the first four editions of the final series.

I think you are looking at this the wrong way! It's one event that holds no importance. It's not the world cup... Team's and fans don't have to take it overly seriously. Who cares if fans don't want to watch rugby in Qatar. Look at it this way: Theres no money in rugby these days. They used to call it the rich mans game. But look at out biggest countries. NZ was posting a huge overall loss, Australia is in financial shambles. And suddenly we have a country offering almost 1 billion dollars to host a "who cares" event!!! It's a no brainer. When world rugby has a spare 1 billion dollars to help grow the game, that;s what really matters. When 20 nations each recieve almost 50 million dollars, that's what really matters! If the competition is somewhat of a flop, they might not want to host it again, which is fine by the fans and players. But in the meantime, lets collect some very much needed money! Imagine what fiji could do with 50 million. For a few days work. Ask them if this competition is worth it. Ask Samoa or Tonga if they wanted to play the game they loved for a few days for a cool 50 mill!

Rich man sport my ass - posh brit living on daddy's money with some free time yes sir.
Sport went pro in 96' before that national teams in general didn't earn much. Some only played for pure love and pride tbh.
I'm no math boffin but 800£ / 4 = 200£ per tourny. And depending on payment scheme for the two leagues (24 teams) you'll end up dividing that 200£ between the 24 teams (26', 28', 30', 32').
As for AUS rugby you seem to know more than us mate.(Ive heard there's a talent/experience shortage) Pretty sure NZ got a cash injection during covid but apparently failed to pay back the loan. SA recently got a small loan. Don't know rest of SH teams, as for NH, Wales have literally lost clubs. Other two UK teams seem to have pulled through better. Irish I think their central player payment system thingy took a big hit. French as always seems like the euros are rolling.
I'm not saying no, but I am saying don't jump in head first. Get all the facts and then decide.

Ur just a negative, imagine the poor scrummers in the heat of the moment and playing on turf in a deserted environs. Don't be like a dicky, it's hot stuff. Sandpaper units

Hopefully there is comansence but money will always be the main thing. Also bear in mind quatar airways is part of the urc so they have some investment. I do not like it to

I agree with Pete. It's a new tournament so no history or tradition being sold or tossed out. I think we should embrace this as the financial issues for rugby around the globe is a serious problem. Cash injections like this will be a massive relief but the only thing I would worry about is who would actually see the rewards - the "old boys club" or will it actually reach grass roots??

A 3 day tournament? That's insane for rugby. The whole bench and rd team will be playing in the final

Let's get that money and pump it into our grassroots: under-developed areas / schools rugby / club rugby in rural areas / coaching academies -- keep the money away from the politicians, and this could do a lot for SA!

I agree Rassie in 2018 Interview said they're always needing money when he was referring too some special transformation scheme about getting rural talent. Personally I say take the transformation thing serious but be careful. Also ultimately the rural/informal grass roots should benefit largely but not only.
Don't do what ANC did with the FiFa 2010 😮 when they got millions to improve grass roots soccer, carte blanche rightly exposed them, unfortunately no one got booked to this day.

A little bizarre in terms of logistics and fan travel but may help spread the sport in the middle east

Let's be real, rugby as a sport is not awash with cash. We need this type of cash injection desperately.
The fact that they're including Tier 2 nations in a second division is a positive.
Obviously we don't want the big wigs to pocket anything or receive kickbacks but we can't be naive to think rugby as it stands is financially strong.

Soccer seem fine tbh, but i agree in that i dont trust them seemingly trying to buy away other countries' previous moral outcries.

Nah this is a joke. it's 800 million over 8 years of guaranteed revenue? Make that revenue somewhere else where people love rugby and hate slavery. Isn't it nieve to believe there aren't a few specific people whose kick backs have not been advertised here. It's just gutless.
