Phil and Zen from Piha Surf School are amazing! If you're planning a trip to New Zealand, head to Piha and look them up. SKIP the "Academy" and go to professionals at Piha Surf School who are locals, safety rated, and teach you the proper basics from go. The lesson with Zen was the highlight of our 6 weeks in New Zealand.
I flew there from Honolulu, Hi., back in 1978 and it was so exspensive to rent a car then, so since the American dollor was so strong I went to a Antique car dealer and purchased a Mint 1926 Dodge Brothers US Car that even had wood wheels for $4,000.00 U.S. it drove perfect and looked the same! If fact I drove it thru the whole North Island for over 30 days and it did not even burn a quart of oil. Well I went to every surf spot I could find, back then there were not many surfers in the country side, but there were more waves than you could find, Point breaks, Beach Breaks, from 2 to 6 feet all over the Island... Yes the water was cold compaired to Hawaii. And back then the wet suit I had was hard to surf in, But had a Blast In the Land of Ze' land.....
Beautiful music for beautiful day through the Key Hole. Lovely ride down memory lane, Thankyou. Hope the 2020 pro gets big piha, the jump-offs will be epic and they seriously want to live feed them paddling through the key hole. Seriously the Camera angels are going to be so important for making the best of Piha. DO IT REALLY WELL guys or its just such a waste of the opportunity and money that your paying Slater and others. Fingers crossed for good winds.
I first surfed at North Piha Beach in 1959 at age 15. Those massive 8 foot 2" thick boards were unwieldy and a dance floor to ride in on. We camped, my brother and I with friends and made many trips to surf there. We went there for years. Hung out at the surf club at North Beach mostly and surfed all day.
Brilliant comment. Could you please email info@pihasurfschool.com or call 0275812812. We are trying to compile a history of women surfers at Piha and would love to have a chat.
Great memories of surfing at Piha in the early 70's . I reckon that I was the first to use a foot line as everyone else thought I was wierd, but by the next year everyone had one.
I hear ya. Grew up at Piha; first memories are shoveling sand into my face as a wee, tasting the texture and remembering that the “gritty” stuff ( sand ) was not nice.. Hahahahaha. I was probably 2yrs old. As an ex-pat, I miss Aotearoa....fond memories. Reversing up the Karekare hill because the fuel pump shit itself was a nice day. Shitty ol car and the road was still “Metal” ( Kiwi’s call gravel - Metal ) back then. Surfed it many times....no bloody crowds back then. Just us and Great Whites....Triangular Grey Fins.....sitting out there 50yrds or so and just following us as we paddled from peak to peak. Funny in retrospect; how as a Surfer we gambled perfect waves with a Predator, who sat just far enough away to give us concerns, yet.....we kept surfing. Ha. Mayor Harvey at the time...he lived there....and..I dated his Daughter briefly. Hi Celia..*waves*..hope u r well.
It's actually the safest beach on the west coast. The rips are predictable and unless you you go too close to the end of Lion Rock, you'll always get back into the beach.

Awesome memory paddling or walking through the keyhole depending on the tide. KIA ORA from Florida!

Great memories, 1980s on our JAG twin fins.
Never used the keyhole we just used to hitch a ride on the left side rip.
Piha is the best surf break in Auckland on the West Coast 👍👍👍👍🍺🍺🍺
Thank you for sharing. Thinking of making a surf trip to NZ.

So epic
can anyone learn to surf? it looks very difficult
randomuploadsism Just go for it. It's not easy, but you will be good one day if you persist! And it's unbelievebly fun!
+randomuploadsism
just do body surfing to start with; then do 1 to 2 foot surf to learn to stand and balance! easy peasy
I’m confident at muriwai and not piha very weird
hey guys
