- MPs face being barred from attending Parliament if they are arrested for serious sexual or violent offences after the Commons voted to reverse moves to water down the measures.
The House of Commons Commission initially proposed that a risk assessment would take place on whether an MP should be prevented from attending the parliamentary estate if they were arrested on suspicion of committing a violent or sexual offence.
The proposal was later revised so the threshold for a ban was at the point of charge.
But MPs voted 170 to 169, majority one, in favour of a proposal from Liberal Democrat Wendy Chamberlain (North East Fife) to revert to the threshold being an arrest.
The division list showed eight Conservative MPs voted in favour of the amendment, including former prime minister Theresa May, while Natalie Elphicke - who defected to Labour from the Tories last week - also supported it.
MPs have previously only been prevented from attending the parliamentary estate by voluntary arrangements with their own party whips under such circumstances.

Why just sexual offences? Why nor fraud? Assault?
There would be nobody left in parliament and the house of lords if they did that
They should never be exempt from prosecution for any wrong doing. Name and shame these cretins
Plenty of other offences to add to the list!
As it should be, same with intentionally lying, fraud, expenses missuse, PPI procurement, lock them all up and strip their pensions.
On another note, the female speaker seems rather weak and useless to me.
The fact that some of them are LAUGHING about this is Disgusting !
They are the dregs of civilisation
I think the laughing is from the Labour MPs. The Tories pulled their amendment earlier in the day because they were so sure that they were going to win - some of them even went home early. It was pretty funny when it turned out that they lost the vote by one.
druggies also should be on that list.
Almost 50/50 voting that someone arrested for sex crimes should be allowed to create laws for the rest of us. I'm guessing this is because arrested doesn't mean guilty.
They should face prison time
which is usual for sex offences.
The clue is (offence) . R
@chloehood355 What a pillock. ARRESTED FOR....not CONVICTED OF. Innocent till proven guilty, you silly woman.
Gee whizz…only 1 of a difference. Tells you all you need to know, though very glad to hear result.
Who voted NO and why?
Yip tax evasion…over stretching your expenses..
Good, as far as I'm concerned you break the law, you don't get to represent us.
No muslims then
who that the tories
I think Emily thornbury is quite safe
lololol deffo!
Shouldn't this apply to those MP's CONVICTED of sex offences? I always thought that British people were innocent until proven guilty.
Didn't you notice they changed all that under Covid regs? Maybe not officially but the old innocent until proven guilty seems to hold no water these days.
Lord ahmed still has his titles and privileges its a joke
@@eyesodd No it didn't. What are you talking about?
