Bottlefed vs. Mother-Raised baby goats: Which is BEST?

- Hi there! 👋🏻 We live on a 1-acre farm right in the middle of the busy city of Phoenix, Arizona! Our names are Kevin & DaNelle, and we moved here in 2009, when our kids Ethan & Lydia were just 6 & 4 years old 🥰 Over the years we've raised goats for milk, chickens for eggs, built a fish/swim pond, planted fruit & nut trees, and grew a large garden full of veggies. We've also raised a bunch of other animals like pigs, sheep, turkeys, geese, peacocks, and more!
Now that our kids are away at college, we have settled into doing what we love most -- which is raising & breeding goats ethically to improve genetics. But don't worry, we'll forever love our goofy pet goats like Luna the herd queen & Willow the stump lover. We also still love raising chickens for eggs, gardening, tending to the fruit & nut trees, and growing fish in the pond. We use the fresh goat's milk to make cheese, butter, yogurt -- and we use that + everything else we harvest on our little farm to make delicious meals. Having a getaway from the busy world right in our backyard brings so much joy to us each day, and we hope it brings some to you, too. 🥰

I have raised goats for years. Here is a little tip that may help next time. As soon as kids are born I let Mom clean them up and while she is I milk out some colostrum about 1 oz per kid born then I introduce them to the bottle right then so they know the texture of the nipple that you will be using. And you know that everybody got an equal share in colostrum and Mom continues to raise them at 3 days old I start giving them a bottle once a day at 2 weeks old I separate them at night milk mom in the morning give them a bottle and then leave her with them the rest of the day and it continues like that until they are weaned.
i do something very similiar i havent had anyone have triplets so i usually dont worry too much about how much colostrum everyone gets but i do seperate at night less of a hassle for me so i dont have to milk twice a day cus i got my own little kids lol
Lol the little goat saying you're not my mama ♡:)
As a zoo docent I worked with newborn lambs to get them really tame for walking on halter and letting zoo visitors pet them.
We just went in with the dams and sat and cuddled their babies ; no feeding involved. This is gonna sound funny, but we sang to them and they would sigh, relax and fall asleep in our arms! It worked; they would go anywhere on harness and be happy being loved on.
That has to be the best thing ever. It's also why my cats are so cuddly. Their mama practically raised them beside me.
Kathy, I too was a zoo docent at Roger Williams in Rhode Island. Where were you a docent?

It's heartwarming to see you treat your animals with such care and respect. I appreciate how much hard work goes into it. Thank you for sharing your family! Your video's are always a bright spot in my day!
Thanks Patty!
I also thank you for how kind & compassionate your whole family are towards your animals. I really enjoy your videos. I just found your channel so have been enjoying all your past videos also.
...it was heart breaking to see how they were trying to do it though.
This is such a wonderful idea! I've always wanted to start with bottle babies, but I hadn't thought ahead to the babies thereafter. I love this plan, and I look forward to seeing how it plays out.
I'm finishing up my goat pen and should be getting goats soon. Your goat vids have been super helpful. Thx.
Awesome
Off Grid Nation we went and talked to a friend of our who has goat's and she gave us some great ideas
Love Your baby goats
Same as humans I should think? If you let them feed from mum they are supposed to get a better immune systems to fight germs etc? And as you say with goats the more human contact the friendlier they will be? So no simple answer apart from mum to start with for a couple months then switch to some bottle if you plan to keep the goat to milk. Some Bottle then let her take milk from mum then top up with bottle? At some point they will get to big to suckle from mum unless you have already separated them t get the milk?
Thank you for sharin' your experience with bottle feeding. I love your patience with them all. :)
She's making them turn against her...so sad.
Frieda!!! Ha! I love this idea! Thanks for posting.
Are you from America
Frida*
I'm watching in 2020 who else 😄
I would try a different nipel some times they prefer something else or that's what I found
0 O that's what I was thinking maybe the brown ones
Kayla Austin no the little hope for her
Oh goodness!Prayers for that tiny one!
Been watching your previous videos past two days and now this. The day couldn't get any better. You guys are one of my favorite channel on UA-cam now!
Thanks!
That's so cool, I will try doing that when my goats have babies.
I like the idea of splitting the difference between bottle and dam raising.
That experiment was an awesome success ,you see little Frieda was the control group of one. If she turns out just as friendly you won't have to do the bottle feeding to bond. I like her spunk. Hahaa
My goat just had 3 kids they are only 2 days old! And we have 2 more goats that are pregnant! Luv yur vids thx for posting!
Awesome!
This prob wont be seen, but i've loved goats my whole life. I watched ONE video about goats and then I found this channel! I supprised me so much they were GOATS I obvously watch it allllll!!!! I love your vids!
OMG!!! I can’t stand the cuteness♥️♥️♥️
Hi Tàriq here! great to know your concern and Important for Goats!👍💐
you guys could separate babies from mom at night and then milk Doris in the morning and use some of the milk for the babies so they are hungry and look forward to seeing you in the mornings with their milk
That's a great idea! I wish I could let my does dam raise. It would make my life SO MUCH EASIER! However, I don't really have a good way to separate babies when it's time to wean. Besides that, my girls show our goats for 4-H and the udders are much more even with us milking them as opposed to babies nursing.
great job y'all. I never thought of trying this. when my goats have babies, I'm gonna try this. I bottle fed 2 of mine when they were babies. pumpkin is still friendly and will follow me everywhere. reverse which is the male don't want hardly anything to do with me. they are 2 of 4 babies.
i work with them everyday and i do milking once a day method so after about two weeks i seperate the mom and babies at night and i try to introduce them to feed and alfalfa and try to interact with them for a good 15-29min and i usually have good results with that then i milk my girls in the morning and let the babies go back to moms and i find that i have really good interaction forever after
The baby goat eyes are beautiful
Nice experiment...not ready for goats but love learning about them👍
We had a baby goat that didn’t know how to suck at first and she probably would’ve died if we hadn’t bottle fed her. Our little boy sucked right off the bat. So, we used a Pritchard nipple with a syringe to feed her to make sure she was getting some milk and we would always try to get her to suck on the nipple. I️ eventually had to stick my finger in her mouth and move it in a sucking motion to build those muscles. She’s about 11 weeks old now and is sucking the bottle down in about 20 seconds! She’s still SUPER small because she was the runt but, she’s so healthy and running and hopping like a normal baby goat!
That's cool!
Great idea. Your videos are so helpful !
weed'em Reap Farm in the City... it's awesome the way that you pour out the milk for the for the baby goat they doing pretty good with the feeding and you're really keeping a natural because it's the mom goat milk I think the other one is used to being bottle feeding I think cuz it smells like. The momma's like you said 🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐
Offf bottle feeding a baby goat is hard!!!!! I had to do it last year when I was in 6th grade
I don't know if this would work with Frieda but we have had baby calves like that. They would be the ones that were smaller or not doing to good. If you have an older soft nipple or use a nipple that has a larger hole for her. Sometimes the nipple is stiff and they will not suck hard enough to get the milk out. They are all so cute.
Here is my fav goats of yours
1.Tilly
2.Doris
3.Luna
4.Penny
Do more goat vids on the baby goats and how to like take care of them
It's really interesting how this topic is so split. Some say bottle fed babies are the worst breeders and milkers while others swear they're the best not only are they friendlier they're easier to hand milk. I wonder if it's a breed thing or if it's just a goat to goat thing if it's the second option how can you tell which babies will be best dam raised and which will be better bottle fed?
Hi there an older experienced farmer told me that is u block its nose very carefully and put the bottle in its mouth it will oubiously gasp for air and the milk will come through the nipple . Great job on the other 2
Also when she takes in a bit then unblock 1 nostril and so on just repeat the process and hopefully .....success
It's not that the runt is naughty. She is super smart and knows what's natural. Feeding from her mother is natural. Don't feel rejected. Just let nature take its course. Good job making it a family project.
What kind of goats are the babies?
Good learning!
I feel so sorry for Freida being so small. I hope she does okay!
Your family are doing well done lovely family god bless you
So, what you do with d goats ? Own consumption ? Going to sell it ? What's d everage price of d goats ?
With a large dairy herd where time and production were important we found pan feeding was the practical way to go. We found it easy to start them on a shallow pan; start them sucking on a finger and bring the head down into the milk. There would be some bubble blowing but they quickly learned the drinking reflex. The friendly feature was there because they associated us with food also weaning was much easier and we could feed their milk back to them as adults at the fair where we did not have an outlet for it.
Good process!
Hi.
My new baby goat (2 day old) is not showing much interest in her mother's milk. She drinks a little and then doesn't want it at all.
I'm afraid she won't even try a feeding bottle. What do I do?
Make sure the milk is warm. Maybe that help frida because it will be more like mom
We do
feel icky...that is guilt hun, you feel guilty about taking baba from mama, thats so sweet xxx
Do you need to wait until 3 days old to begin bottle feeding? Is it OK to start milking mama after 24 hours?
You can start right away.
If I'm want to bottle feed orphan goats could you tell me the best formula be blessed......
Hi, do you think if I rotated between feeding my twin babies cows milk and her milk, will she still accept them with the scent??
I would think so.
I love the idea I think I'll try it
Yeah this was a really cool idea, and I love how this video shows how it works over the first two weeks of baby goat raising. Well edited. I don't have my goats yet, but I've been debating in my mind if I want to bottle feed or let their dam raise them. This method seems like the best of both worlds. Putting this video in my favorites for later.
Me too
Pritchard nipples work the best!

hallo i would like to ask a question. in what state do you guys live and how good is it for beginner homesteaders.
Arizona. Has some challenges like all states.

There so cute!🥺❤️
Haha Ethan 'Tenth times the charm....'
I'm wondering if you have an opinion on buying bottle fed vs mommy fed new goats? I am buying my first 2 Nigerians in the spring, one farm bottle feeds, and the other does not. Initially I was going to buy from the bottle feeding farm, but they have not been as helpful or as receptive to me visiting to see mommy goat. Which farm would you buy from?
Depends on the personalities. Sometimes the bottlefeds are a little friendlier.
Try the Playtex natural . There softer
Hello
I'm trying to let baby drink from the bottle but he has a problem. He does not get milk from his mum as well. He just suck the nipples two or three times and stop. Can you help me , please??
I am picking up Baby Goats For in the morning do I need to warm the milk and how many hours in between do I feed them
I’m looking back on your videos trying to figure out how to milk a momma that doesn’t want to be touched. Baby seems hungry but momma doesn’t want her baby to touch her teats. Not sure how much the baby is actually eating..HELP me please. Kid is 3 days old
Just where are the " arms" located on a goat?
really cute I loved this :)
Love love love love it!!
love that little one! who says the runt is the weakest lol :)
Oh my gosh they are so cute
Hi it's hard haveing goats the goats get scared u have to spend time white them for like 1 HR and we have 9 and we got ot from a guy that spend like 10 min with them them we got more from someone else and they love us so much u should name on or your goats piston and blade
Maybe try keeping the milk warm so it feels like it's coming from mom
We do
We have bottle feed goats too 😊
Feed the mama high protein food
I love you guys
The higher you hold the bottle the better cuz of air goats can’t berp you don’t want them to get an upset stomach they die of starvation then seen it happen before it’s so sad they won’t eat anything if there is air in there tummy
I want goats
It’s best to make the babies to take the milk from the mother goat because it gives that soothing comfort for them , they learn things from there mother directly without our intervention and definitely the mother goat will be happy to feed it’s own baby with care , this increases the quality of milk for babies which is going to Make the baby healthy
In case if the mother is weak or not giving proper milk then we can bottle feed milk
IN GENERAL , WE SHOULD NOT ALTER THE NATURE AND ITS ACTIVITIES , It’s my opinion
Thank you
Is the bottle feeding because they will be pets?
are you from America
Where’s the other little girl
Lidya face in 7:33 so into it.
Do you know when girl Nigerian dwarf girls get their horns?
They get them the same time as the boys
What a good idea. 🙂
Do you still do this? I agree with you taking the babies from Mama is kind of sad but I see why it is done. I am not a goat obviously (lol) but if someone would have taken one of my babies I would have never gotten over it.
We don’t anymore - we’ve never taken away the babies but for a time we tried to bottlefeed while being raised by mama
Will the mama goat be mad if I bottle feed her baby goat instead of her milking her baby goat 🔷please help🔷
As long as it's her milk it's usually fine.
About how much will you be selling them for?
You should put Frida in the mommy go in a cage by their selves with just Frieda in the mommy goat so that way she can nurse just Frida and tell Frida catches up
I only pull a baby away if mom rejects it or mom can’t feed it
My baby goat
Kid Sharing.
we always pull the babies
I ADORE THEM like crazy
Why are you not keeping meat chickens?
We do when we run out of the last batch we have in the freezers.
Love baby goat
You said the baby littlest one is the worst
Let Frita have a few minutes alone with mom to eat. When she is full let the other two in to eat all the need.
Love it
Well at least the stubborn goat is smart. I mean, she can't be 'fooled' into taking a bottle. 🤷
Just leave her alone and let her mom and her stay together it's nature ways
Don't let her starving when her mother is right there.

Hello
Interesting.
I don't want to go back and get my dog back to the house so I don't know
Hi
I want to apoligize for becomming upset , but when you said you were giving up on baby Frita, the words just came out of me that I'm giving up on you. I love you guys, the whole family. I hope Frita is ok and I hope we can all let this go as a lesson learned.
