Bottlefed vs. Mother-Raised baby goats: Which is BEST?

  • Hi there! 👋🏻 We live on a 1-acre farm right in the middle of the busy city of Phoenix, Arizona! Our names are Kevin & DaNelle, and we moved here in 2009, when our kids Ethan & Lydia were just 6 & 4 years old 🥰 Over the years we've raised goats for milk, chickens for eggs, built a fish/swim pond, planted fruit & nut trees, and grew a large garden full of veggies. We've also raised a bunch of other animals like pigs, sheep, turkeys, geese, peacocks, and more!
Now that our kids are away at college, we have settled into doing what we love most -- which is raising & breeding goats ethically to improve genetics. But don't worry, we'll forever love our goofy pet goats like Luna the herd queen & Willow the stump lover. We also still love raising chickens for eggs, gardening, tending to the fruit & nut trees, and growing fish in the pond. We use the fresh goat's milk to make cheese, butter, yogurt -- and we use that + everything else we harvest on our little farm to make delicious meals. Having a getaway from the busy world right in our backyard brings so much joy to us each day, and we hope it brings some to you, too. 🥰

I have raised goats for years. Here is a little tip that may help next time. As soon as kids are born I let Mom clean them up and while she is I milk out some colostrum about 1 oz per kid born then I introduce them to the bottle right then so they know the texture of the nipple that you will be using. And you know that everybody got an equal share in colostrum and Mom continues to raise them at 3 days old I start giving them a bottle once a day at 2 weeks old I separate them at night milk mom in the morning give them a bottle and then leave her with them the rest of the day and it continues like that until they are weaned.

    • @titicaca315
      @titicaca315 6 років тому +5

i do something very similiar i havent had anyone have triplets so i usually dont worry too much about how much colostrum everyone gets but i do seperate at night less of a hassle for me so i dont have to milk twice a day cus i got my own little kids lol

As a zoo docent I worked with newborn lambs to get them really tame for walking on halter and letting zoo visitors pet them.
We just went in with the dams and sat and cuddled their babies ; no feeding involved. This is gonna sound funny, but we sang to them and they would sigh, relax and fall asleep in our arms! It worked; they would go anywhere on harness and be happy being loved on.

Same as humans I should think? If you let them feed from mum they are supposed to get a better immune systems to fight germs etc? And as you say with goats the more human contact the friendlier they will be? So no simple answer apart from mum to start with for a couple months then switch to some bottle if you plan to keep the goat to milk. Some Bottle then let her take milk from mum then top up with bottle? At some point they will get to big to suckle from mum unless you have already separated them t get the milk?

That's a great idea! I wish I could let my does dam raise. It would make my life SO MUCH EASIER! However, I don't really have a good way to separate babies when it's time to wean. Besides that, my girls show our goats for 4-H and the udders are much more even with us milking them as opposed to babies nursing.

great job y'all. I never thought of trying this. when my goats have babies, I'm gonna try this. I bottle fed 2 of mine when they were babies. pumpkin is still friendly and will follow me everywhere. reverse which is the male don't want hardly anything to do with me. they are 2 of 4 babies.

i work with them everyday and i do milking once a day method so after about two weeks i seperate the mom and babies at night and i try to introduce them to feed and alfalfa and try to interact with them for a good 15-29min and i usually have good results with that then i milk my girls in the morning and let the babies go back to moms and i find that i have really good interaction forever after

We had a baby goat that didn’t know how to suck at first and she probably would’ve died if we hadn’t bottle fed her. Our little boy sucked right off the bat. So, we used a Pritchard nipple with a syringe to feed her to make sure she was getting some milk and we would always try to get her to suck on the nipple. I️ eventually had to stick my finger in her mouth and move it in a sucking motion to build those muscles. She’s about 11 weeks old now and is sucking the bottle down in about 20 seconds! She’s still SUPER small because she was the runt but, she’s so healthy and running and hopping like a normal baby goat!

I don't know if this would work with Frieda but we have had baby calves like that. They would be the ones that were smaller or not doing to good. If you have an older soft nipple or use a nipple that has a larger hole for her. Sometimes the nipple is stiff and they will not suck hard enough to get the milk out. They are all so cute.

It's really interesting how this topic is so split. Some say bottle fed babies are the worst breeders and milkers while others swear they're the best not only are they friendlier they're easier to hand milk. I wonder if it's a breed thing or if it's just a goat to goat thing if it's the second option how can you tell which babies will be best dam raised and which will be better bottle fed?

With a large dairy herd where time and production were important we found pan feeding was the practical way to go. We found it easy to start them on a shallow pan; start them sucking on a finger and bring the head down into the milk. There would be some bubble blowing but they quickly learned the drinking reflex. The friendly feature was there because they associated us with food also weaning was much easier and we could feed their milk back to them as adults at the fair where we did not have an outlet for it.

It’s best to make the babies to take the milk from the mother goat because it gives that soothing comfort for them , they learn things from there mother directly without our intervention and definitely the mother goat will be happy to feed it’s own baby with care , this increases the quality of milk for babies which is going to Make the baby healthy
In case if the mother is weak or not giving proper milk then we can bottle feed milk
IN GENERAL , WE SHOULD NOT ALTER THE NATURE AND ITS ACTIVITIES , It’s my opinion

Let Frita have a few minutes alone with mom to eat. When she is full let the other two in to eat all the need.

Well at least the stubborn goat is smart. I mean, she can't be 'fooled' into taking a bottle. 🤷

Just leave her alone and let her mom and her stay together it's nature ways
Don't let her starving when her mother is right there.

I want to apoligize for becomming upset , but when you said you were giving up on baby Frita, the words just came out of me that I'm giving up on you. I love you guys, the whole family. I hope Frita is ok and I hope we can all let this go as a lesson learned.
