Also, 50BMG rounds are not really accurate.

when I was 5 years old my Dad was in the National Guard for 14 years, drove a half-track with 2 (or 4?) 50 cal bmg's in a turret. he said he fired it one time during 2 weeks duty at Lewes, DE at a drone airplane flying over the water at the beach. he said that another gunner down the beach fired one shot with a 40mm AA and blew the drone into a million pieces. he said the drone moved so fast it was really hard to track it even with tracer rounds (every 3rd or 5th round). his cousin shot down a German ME-109 in Italy while serving with General Patton's division with a single 50cal bmg and got a silver star because the plane was diving down to attack the air strip they had captured. My Dad said he always admired his cousin for doing that after he found out how hard it was to hit a moving target.

Former sailor here, I can count on one hand how many times I've actually heard of them getting that close. Every time I *have* heard about it happening, its because the USN wanted them that close and they weren't fighting back. Navies usually just nuke whatever they want to kill from at least 10nm away.

Most of the aircraft shot down by WWII USN vessels (outside of naval aircraft) were brought down by radar directed 5" cannon fire with proximity fuses.
The M2 hasn’t been replaced and it had been in service since the 40’s because there is nothing wrong with it. Think about it, it’s a reliable 50 cal gun that has a good fire rate. So why invest in a new weapon?
Have shot GPMGs into the oggin and can confirm it’s great fun. And if you’ve never done it, or you fired them on land but NOT sea before, then don’t be talking about things you don’t know about. Hitting a mobile target from a mobile platform at acute angles of attack against a low contrast background with glare is extremely difficult. You WILL straddle the target with almost every round, no matter how good your aim. The only exemption to that was when I saw a LS called “Axel” Foley drill the “killer tomato” dead centre with 20mm cannon fire straight away and ruin the exercise for everyone who was waiting behind him to essentially write their name in the sea. They put him last in the pecking order after that little excursion. Sadly deflating and knackered killer tomato was recovered by the seaboat, repaired and redeployed.

The water actually slows the round down to an non-lethal speed. So about 3 ft down your not in trouble. Unless they lob hedgehog depth-charges at you.
