Useful, because it seems to cover the XC70 (II) facelift 2006 D5 too. I have spent 2 hours looking for the yellow atf dipstick now... The one everyone is talking about. The problem with most of these youtube movies is that it shows petrol versions (US), while diesel is most common in Scandinavia.
When I did XC60 d5 2011. It was that bad , I flushed it out twice with clean oil then one last refill, It fixed the problems and that was 3 years ago going strong. They were told needed new gearbox at the time. I love the sump plug design.
Super, will be doing mine this summer, Got new seals just in case and 8 ltrs of Volvo oil. I use a diagnostic tool via an app for the gearbox oil temp . why not 🙂
@@julianporter5 I go just to be safe and as it's only changed once in about ten years it's not as if it's a regular payment, but plenty of alternatives on the market.
I just done this on me own d5 after i watched this. i was told i should resist the the cars computer so the car knows it has new oil , i dont have the computer tool to do this and the car drives very wel and changes gears smooth enough so do you think it is something that has to be done and what would happen if i did get it done would it feel even better . Im from north Roscommon by the way its good seeing a good Irish man on UA-cam
@@ORileysAutos Thanks for the reply. I was looking at the Otofix D1 Pro. It retails @ $1800NZ here. I would appreciate any advice you may have on this scan tool.
ZF say if your BMW has done over 100k miles to put the old oil back in if changing filter/ sump leak. An oil additive is recommended if adding new oil is needed.
using your refill method does not ensure correct level. after draining and refiling, transmission needs to be exercised, (run thru all gears at 2000rpm), and temp at approx 80deg C; remove level check plug and fill with oil until oil FLOWS ( always some sign of oil in check tube) from g/box thru check plug. Always found these trannys low on oil otherwise. Good vid!!
Hi. They're using the tf80sc transmission, does this mean I could remove the tf80sc from a v70 or S60 / S80 and replace the tf80sc transmission in the xc90? Or what's the difference of its not a straight forward transplant? I'm asking since I have a guy selling an overhauled S60 gearbox tf80sc and instead of overhauling mine, I thought of purchasing that.
Why is it many dont do this?? I mean timing belt will always be done but this not so much Chatting with a Mechanic at the motor factors when buying fluid for mine and advised be not to do it?and if i did just do a drain n fill?and not multiple fills which makes sense to me would be beneficial...he even so far as to say if u have problems after.doing this you would keep the old oil n replace it if it now has problems....very odd
I was told the same thing by a Volvo "specialist". It's sealed for life and you shouldn't service it unless you have problems. I call bullshit on that. No oil lasts forever!
Quick and dirty roadside version of changing the gearbox oil. Proper Volvo procedure is way more thorough and complete in it's fluid change process, hence why you pay more for it, you get what you pay for - like always. This will still be better than nothing tho for sure.
@@ORileysAutos On these Volvos the correct procedure is to disconnect the return line from the gearbox cooler and run it into a container whilst running the car to empty the system through the line, let 2 liters empty then fill up again and doing so 3 times before doing a final drain and refill and setting to correct level. This way you have a near 100% flush with no machine, this is the factory procedure for Volvos at the dealers, my Volvo colleagues next to me do a lot of these at our dealer and I do some on my customers Peugeot cars, they are the same gearbox after all and there for the same procedure, also same with the new 8 speed Aisin gearbox ;)
@@nesmio7378 what you describe there is the quick any dirty roadside version of a transmission flush mate 😂 no fucking way thats an official Volvo procedure If a proper Volvo workshop cant be bothered to purchase and use a transmission flush machine they should rethink their way of doing business. The machine is quicker, easier and streamlines the process a ton thats why at least around me every garage has one.
Hah this car would sell for ~10.000€ here. Proper 5 cyl Diesel, working Automatic The crappy 1.6 i4 Diesels they put in these aswell go for less around 6000-7000€ at the moment.
Have you used a machine to flush it through. I’ve received conflicting advice on using one. Gearbox specialist said don’t. Independent Volvo mechanic said yes use the machine.

Jimmy from drain to fill it takes 2.7 litres.
9 litres and you can change oil 3 times.
Done loads of them.
First-class stuff, thanks. Good take on the whole shebang too.
Glad you liked it!
Jimmy ,not sure if you are aware if the auxiliary belt goes it takes the cam belt out and does a lot of head damage
Great wee video, just the way i do mine and my gear changes are silky smooth, gd lad.
Good to hear
Great video. Thanks. Brilliant video
Glad you enjoyed it

Any need to use Volvo branded oil?
Do you have to use the diagnostic tool?
@@TheBestLife4You It helps to show the right temperature otherwise you will just have to guess which means you might get the oil level wrong.

Local gearbox service said don’t reset the computer and don’t let anyone put a machine on it to flush it out in one go.
Thanks so much
Fantastic content as always. Can you recommend a scan tool. I recently purchased the Xtool d8bt. Turn out to be totally useless. Cheers
Depends what you are looking for and budget. Have you seen my new video on the Launch CRP129 evo?

Does it change better / kick down faster now?

No problem 👍
Great video!
is it the same procedure on a 2015 Volvo XC70 D5 AWD (215 hp) ?
Is there no filters to change on this box?
Can you use a cheaper oil to flush? As £20÷ a litre to flush Seems rather excessive to me..

I read it was 60 deg btw
its 60degC and its for AT not for engine
how is this oil performing up until now? No issues?
Perfect
Thats exactly the same way for my 2006 auto s60 d5 . it must have the same gearbox
Engine and gearbox are almost identical just some small changes
