  • A tour of Purple Pear Farm in New South Wales, Australia, a permaculture and biodynamic farm with rotating tractor domes over mandala garden beds, pigs, chooks, and some great philosophy. Mark and Kate run a small CSA (community supported agriculture) offering veggie boxes to their local community.
    They dream not of growing ever bigger and bigger and controlling the market for veggies in their region, but rather of staying small and supporting other vegetable growers to initiate similar projects, or even to join theirs, so that everyone in the community is eating well and living well. Now there’s a vision to be inspired by!

    These tours/interviews/short films give me so much hope and enthusiasm for the future, to grow food in a healthy way integrated with nature myself, and to trust that many are feeling the same !

    Really good point about the connection with clients once people understand how you produce food this is way better than the organic certificate. Also great idea with the garden beds shaped in circles with chicken tractor the same size, never seen this one before ;)

      As described by Linda Woodrow in her book "Permaculture Home Garden" Well worth a read.

    Nicely made. Linda Woodrow wrote a great book on the mandala system with chicken domes in 1995??? called "The Permaculture Home Garden". Hers was more complex/integrated than the one shown here but essentially the same She included fruit trees between the circular bed, timed to leave waste fruit behind as the chicken tractor approached; perennials around the outside, and spots for compost heaps etc. Also pond in the middle as Purple Pear has.

      My family's egg farm is organic 100% but we don't get it certified as were just a small business with 1000 chickens or so. It's too expensive for us to pay and anyone can come to our farm and see for themselves its organic!

    I love the structure the mandalas give the garden! It's not such a "messy" permaculture design and a great way to rotate chickens and make them work for you. Love love love it.

    As a vegan I hope we can one day eliminate the use of animals altogether. But this kind of farming is so much closer to being ethical when it at least comes to animal welfare. I wish we could have smaller scale farming using such practises all over the globe. This would be a step in the right direction, both for human and animal rights.

    Please say you let the bed rest for a time after the chickens have worked it, to allow the soil to neutralize any possible pathogens present in the fresh chicken manure! Chipotle has learned the hard way that there are wrong ways to organically farm.

      They're conscious beings, with brains, emotions, feelings and experiences that are not dissimilar from a human being. Talent, knowledge and prestige do not make a life valuable- every living being values their life more than anything. It reasons that if we sincerely value our lives then we will value the lives of others; morality derives from the mind and therefor morality concerns the mind. Humans have developed the agriculture of plants for thousands of years which has been the most significant contributor to our survival and health. Enslaving, raping and killing animals is never moral, and when there is no necessity for doing it then it is an act of utmost cruelty.

    • @Azihayya
      @Azihayya 8 років тому +2

      The research included in the Cambridge Declaration of Consciousness proves that animals possess the same conscious-enabling substrates and emotional faculties as human beings. Even if the science wasn't there it's rather obvious- I'm sure that a lot of things could be said to try to make human beings seem like clockwork machines, but this simply isn't true.
      Humans also enslaved, raped, killed, have stolen from and waged wars against one another. We all have to take responsibility for ourselves and not use other individuals as excuses for our immorality.
      Animal products were not the most significant contributors to the development of our brains- the most significant contributor to the overall level of energy and brain development of human beings was starchy foods. Our brains use glucose as fuel, which is derived most efficiently from carbohydrates. The most significant role that animal products had in the human diet was providing a food source that otherwise did not exist during certain periods of time in certain places.
      You're willing to inflict your worst nightmares onto other beings that experience life in fundamentally the same way that you do only for the sake of vanity.

  • @Soapiesaur
    @Soapiesaur 6 років тому +1

    Great video, except you really shouldn't be taking the breast milk and the eggs of the animals. Using animals for food (not their flesh necessarily) is not a very 'nature thing' to do. Don't take what is not yours.
