For those curious about L.A.B.s that she mentions when discussing her compost, it's lactobacillus. This bacteria helps to accelerate composting, but is also a bacteria found in probiotics and even our gut health.
I finished watching it 15 minutes ago and immediately started again from the beginning. Absolutely beautiful and peaceful video. Peni's whole demeanor is very calm and comforting.
My favorite part of the video is the part about saving seed and using seed which are native to the area. Rather than importing hybrid seed from China, grow local seeds that are native to the environment. Each generation of seed becomes stronger for the local area.
Absolutely! I am thankful for those who have already been searching for and restoring our availability to many of our native seeds here in the U.S. before they are all lost. It behooves us to carry on that work in our own local areas and gardens for our future generations. Blessings on your day Sir! 🌻🐛
@@zoewhite7705 many of the large commercial seed companies import seeds from China so there is no way of knowing what zone or climate conditions they were grown in, or how the seeds were processed, etc. (regulations/standards are different there). Seeds that are sourced locally (or as close as possible) to our own growing area have a better chance of quality growth and better performance because they were grown here.
There is a woman on here, Anneofalltrades, who is just as obsessive about her soil. She's in Tennesse, but she's changed my whole allotment plan when we get it next year.

I watched this as video #17 in a 23 video playlist. I've watched every single video before this, and 6 more to go. Mostly, while interesting, they've all been a disappointment from a permaculture perspective. The videos, including this one, make a claim to permaculture because they have trees and then they have annual vegetables and flowers in neat little rows or raised beds. They're good gardening videos (and the title of the playlist is "Inspiring Gardens" and not "Inspiring permaculture food forests" so they do deliver on the promise of the title. But this video, far and away beyond the 16 videos I've watched previous, is the most inspiring garden and garden story. Several others have been inspiring but the honest emotion and conviction in Peni's voice and story is truly inspiring. Anyone who sees this and does not plant a seed does not have a heart - and we all have hearts. The only two true permaculture gardens I have seen on UA-cam are Rick Austin's survivalist garden at ua-cam.com/video/LcGj157LGhA/v-deo.html and the forest garden of Robyn and Robert (no last name listed) at ua-cam.com/video/mdi_9o92XcU/v-deo.html. Virtually everything else I've seen is simply trees and a conventional garden.
Peni‘s story is incredibly well filmed and told. Thank you so much for the work Huw, it means a lot to see such amazing gardens and hear the wise words!!
Oh my goodness...I loved this SO much! So beautifully photographed too. Just gorgeous. I would love to see more of Peni and her beautiful property. Thanks so much Huw! 🙏
@@HuwRichards And PLEASE 🙏🙏🙏 reveal her secrets to such bountifull blueberry harvest! I could not believe my eyes! Also Huw - Hollywood should knock on Your door, You have an amazing filming talent!
🌳☘️🍀Amazing concept growing our own food is indeed an wonderful experience connecting with nature ,,, connecting with ourselves growing with plants outside in nature is indeed an honour 🌱☘️🍀🌳🙏🇮🇳
If we, as the gardening/permaculture community could ever make realized the connection between the earth that we've been entrusted to steward and the Creator, God that has placed that responsibility on our hearts, oh, how we could change the world!
Ideas like these come very handy when you don't have money to buy all these fertilizers. I learn a lot from these talks and practice some of them and they work for me. Thanks.
What a beautiful video, Huw! The filming is terrific, and Peni is amongst the nicest people I’ve ever listened to. There is a spiritual bond between her and her little patch of earth. Thank you 💚💚💚
What a stunning video, thank you Hugh for introducing us to Peni and thank you Peni for letting us see your beautiful project. So many wise words you said in this video. A big hearted happy new year to your ventures. Heather
Dear Huw, I get just as excited as everyone else when you showcase another inspiring garden. The camerawork is stunning, as always, and there is a nice flow. However, I feel that the music in the background throughout the entire video is often distracting and in this particular video it is on a par with Peni's narrative. It would be much more enjoyable and easier to hear what she has to say if the music was either much quieter (background) or only there to open and close the video. I've been meaning to suggest this for while, so today's the day (lol). Keep up your fantastic work and happy new year to you! Greetings from your fans in Stuttgart, Germany
I have been collecting my seeds for a few years. The seeds of your own garden are more equipped for the challenges of your area. There parent have given them the necessary skills and genome for success in your exact location. The nutrient density of the seed depends on the area it was grown in as well. These things make your own seeds better every year you produce them instead of worse every year with bad practices.
Thanks Huw for a beautiful inspiring video. She is a very interesting lady with sound values and has created not just an amazing garden but an amazing life. Happy New Year Huw 🍀🍀🍀
I love it when you make these series, Huw! They are so inspiring and I look forward to them all year! Thank you! This one was so good that I started from the beginning as soon as it was over!
I love Peni's philosophy! I buy seed from the wales seed hub and will look out for hers. And fermenting food is someeething I would like to explore more.
Oh, how lovely to hear someone else doing just like me! I am so meticoulus with my lists but as soon as I am out of the house it’s like they don’t excist. 😂 I am one with my garden and do what I feel it is telning me to do. Love your place! 👌❤️
Well done Penni. Glad you are going on still. This is a lovely garden, When I had a market stall I used to be down there every Friday morning stocking up. All the best Pete.
I agree with what you said about saving your own seeds,I've recently started to do this and it is so satisfying to watch your produce grow from the seeds that you have produced, they grow better as they 'know' the soil that they came from, you are keeping the vegetables pure from contamination and its free.
So lovely, the softness but strength in you is so reassuring Peni, not every gardener looks the same. Lovely music and thanks for sharing with us. Ella x
When you said, "you don't know how much this means to us..." I think I did! I was holding my breath, crossing my fingers, and simply praying .... waiting and praying!" I am so completely thrilled and happy for you both. Congratulations on pushing through and sticking to it for such a fulfilling payoff. Absolutley stoked for you both. Happy only new year!
Looking so forward to watching Huw! Happy new year from Ireland. I'm binge watching your videos, absolutely love them and I'm taking lots from them. Getting a huge tunnel this year and want to have a really decent garden for my family this year

An inspiration this video, full of life and harmony. Thanks Huw for continue showing the people that is possible. It's a symbiosis we nurture the soil and she give us food.
I love this place. It may be worth mentioning that the main veg growing area is at 100m above sea level with west facing aspect and 13km from the sea at 51.8°N. Average gradient is ca. 16%. Low permeability silty clay soil. Formerly, low / medium quality grazing land.
