Making a 12" Figure Armature (the 3 minute armature)

  • The 3 minute armature, using a piece of A4 paper, 6ft (180cm) of thin aluminium armature wire you can make a simple scaled figure armature to 1/6th scale (12").
3.17mm Square Aluminium wire is used in this example, thinner gauges of steel galvanised or soft copper wires can be used.
With such a close link between the golden section and body proportions it is possible to scale armatures up or down using standard paper stock sizes like A3, A2, A1 etc. and using different gauges of wire accordingly.

You have obviously done this a time or two. Lol. I followed along with your video and made an armature figure. However, it wasn't easy and I had to tie a few areas with wire because they kept sliding around. Thank you though for making this video and posting it here. I searched for a long time before I found a tutorial like this. No one has yet folded paper this way to show the correct measurements and THIS is very important. Thank you!!!!! :)))

Next time use a darker writing implement, such as a "Sharpie", so we can clearly see the lines.

Now do I wanna spend more time in the interim fixing and save money.... just build great heads and hands or just get good armatures and be short that head/hand making money.... Nothing is really that much of a rush.... It is a balance.
This video might spur me to get more heavy gauge wire now that I think of it.

I would have found this more helpful if there were written verbal instructions to go with the visuals. I also found it difficult to see the paper template at first.
I've found the template really helpful, but find that after the first few sculpting steps, I get confused, especially when it's obscured by your hands.
I'll keep trying, this video was helpful. :)
