Definitely choose the WiFi over the GPS device! (You won’t need WiFi with a EU-wide cell phone contact though, the mobile internet service in Iceland is great! We didn’t have a WiFi device and definitely didn’t need one). We did rent a gps though - which was COMPLETELY useless. Fortunately we got a full refund for it from the rental company which was very nice. The GPS didn’t even know major secondary streets, even if they were paved and led to towns or famous tourist attractions. We endet up only using google maps - most of the time with the „Iceland with a view“-Overlay or the Happy Campers Overlay that showed the campgrounds :) That was the perfect way to find our way around! We just got back home today and I‘m so sad that our trip is over :(
I totally agree with the GPS... it was not as user friendly as I thought it'd be. My travel buddies had international service on their phones so we lucked out. Have safe journeys, everyone!

Hello Genie I finally got out of jail in Iceland. I found out weed is very illegal. Please make a video about this because weed is legal in the states but NOT in Iceland and results in jail time. I found this out because I went to jail in Iceland.
Good. Weed is not legal in the states ( it is illegal at federal level ) with various exemptions at state level. You should have checked before traveling. In some countries the consequences are much worse. I've been to jail in us, how was iceland jail ?
@@haydenhayden8872 For the life of me I can't imagine why one wouldn't *research this ahead of time*. At best it's a very basic school boy error. Hello, I'm going till Iceland in 6.6. to 13.6. I would like to ask if I rent Toyota Aygo if it's enough for golden circle, ring road and westfjords ? NO F-roads that's clear to me that Aygo is not allowed. We are budget travellers, just 2 person, no big demands for comfort. My biggest concern is whether the car can handle westfjords. Thanks for answer :) btw your videos really helped me so BIG THANKS 😊

Awesome video. I'm coming for my second visit to Iceland this May. This time we will rent an RV and this video definitely helps with a lot of things we were still confused about it! Thanks!!
When you refer to a ‘WiFi Device’ for the car rental rather than a GPS, is the WiFi Device basically something that has a built in data plan that uses cellular service that you can then use to connect your phone to the internet over WiFi from the car and cellular between the car and the outside world? Does it also let you make voice calls and text messages or is it only a data plan for internet access. Finally, is a phone with a cell service SIM card plus a car with Apple CarPlay offer an alternative to the extra cost of a ‘WiFi Device’ from the car rental company.
Hi there! Check out this video for more info and to get my discount on Trawire Wi-Fi device rental: icelandwithaview.com/5-wi-fi-internet-options-iceland/ But, to answer your questions... a Wi-Fi device for rent (either from the car rental company or Trawire) is about the size of a cell phone and is a portable mobile hotspot. You can remove it from the car and take it with you on a hike or in a restaurant! It connects to the internet via Wi-Fi, not cellular data. The device will need to be charged just like your phone and first you'll connect the device to the internet and then you'll connect your phone to the device via Bluetooth. With a Wi-Fi device you will NOT be connected to the cellular network. However, you may still make calls as long as your phone allows Wi-Fi calling. You can also use services like FaceTime and Skype to speak to others. I'm not entirely sure about texting but iPhone to iPhone "texting" will be fine with a Wi-Fi device. iPhone to Android or vice versa may not work without being connected to the cell network. One of the best (and cost effective) reasons to rent a Wi-Fi device is that it allows multiple phones, tablets, and laptops to connect to it for the same price. So, you and your travel partner can BOTH be connected to the internet almost anywhere in the country via the Wi-Fi device for roughly $10 USD per day. A SIM card connects to the internet via cellular data and one SIM card will need to be purchased for each phone you're wanting to use while in Iceland. The cellular network is quite reliable all around Iceland and you'll be able to make calls, texts to any phone, video calls, and web browsing. HOWEVER, SIM cards also have a cellular data limit so you'll need to be aware of your usage and "top-off" if/when you're getting closing to the limit. AND, many newer phones are not equipped with a physical SIM card. Check to see if your phone requires a physical SIM card or an eSIM. I believe AppleCarPlay will work regardless of you being connected to the internet via Wi-Fi device or SIM card. As long as you're connected to the internet in some way, you should be able to connect to AppleCarPlay via Bluetooth, and all will work fine. Maybe reach out to the car rental company to verify this.
@@IcelandwithaView thank you so much for the detailed response. I did watch the linked video and it was most helpful as well. I understand that connection to the device from your phone would be via WiFi, but wifi does not have that sort of coverage to cover all of Iceland. So I would bet that it connects to the internet via a cellular data network like LTE or faster from the WiFi device, essentially acting as a WiFi Hotspot, but perhaps not a voice cellular network. I guess that the connection to the internet is basically transparent to the user, so it may seem to be going over wifi. In any event, I have all of the info I need to explore my options now. Thanks so much. BTW … I do plan on purchasing your ebook / interactive map once I know for sure that I am going to Iceland with my wife (working out final plans now).
@@IcelandwithaViewWiFi is just how your device connects to the device that is connected to the internet, it’s not the internet itself. I just looked up Trawire and they use a cellular network.
Planning a trip in early September 2025, since it is the shoulder season between summer and winter, would you suggest a 2WD or a 4WD for a clockwise trip on the Ring Road and the Westfjords?
Thank you for the useful information. I'm planning travel to Iceland from Korea this summer. I have a question about rental car. Do I necessarily need to make a reservation before I take off Korea? Or can I rent a car on arriving at Keflavik Airport? One more to ask, Can I drop the car at Reykjavik Airport that I picked up at Keflavik? I'm planning to trip to Nuuk after the trip in Iceland.
Hi there! Great questions! Yes, please book your rental car BEFORE your trip! You may be able to get a car upon arrival but considering that your trip is during peak travel season, your selection of vehicles will be limited. Best to not risk it and reserve in advance. You can definitely pick up the car at Keflavik and drop it off elsewhere - just be sure the rental agency has a location wherever you plan to drop it off. There may be an extra fee as well to pick up and drop off at different locations. Happy planning!
Does the car need to be cleaned ( car wash) before returning? Thinking about perhaps some mud on it from the road..Do they charge for that? Taking pix at pickup or filming is also a great tip
Hi Chris! A car wash is always a good idea before returning your rental car, especially if you've been driving the Ring Road, but if you buy ALL of the insurance coverage, the rental company will take the car back in whatever condition! There are a few self-wash stations, specifically at gas stations, around the city.
going to Iceland for the third time in June.. going to do the entire ring road again.. this time we are planning to rent a Tesla for the trip. I know Iceland has plenty of Tesla super chargers around the ring road & they are very big on EV"s as. country.. what are your thoughts on doing the ring road in a Tesla? thx!
Hi Evan!!! I am VERY excited to hear about your journey around the Ring Road in an EV! Please let me know how it goes (email hello@icelandwithaview.com or send me a DM on Instagram @icelandwithaview). Many travelers are wanting to know about the "hassle" of charging while on the road and although Iceland is great with clean energy, I've questioned the infrastructure of charging stations. Blue Car is starting to promote their EVs more and more because it's becoming a more popular and desired means of traveling. Obviously I've not made the journey myself in an EV so I'm very curious about how your experience goes. And, since you've already traveled the Ring Road, you have a great comparison and the knowledge of the pros and cons. Again, please keep me updated! Happy planning!
You left out the single most important thing. Even though the roads may be empty and well maintained, stick to the speed limit (mostly 90 km/h outside towns) as speeding fines astronomically high.
Any advice on renting an electric vehicle? I'm going to be visiting early/mid November and looking at the EV option to reduce my footprint and save money at the pump (from what I can tell charging costs a fraction of filling the tank). I'll primarily be in Reykjavik with a day trip or two for the golden circle and south coast. Thanks!
Thanks for watching! November is getting short on daylight hours and can have some big storms, but it’s not a bad time to visit. Check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/XTy8eRQo5jU/v-deo.html
How fast (& reliable) is the Wifi in Iceland?? We need to be able to stream a math class for two hours a day. So hoping for at least 50 Mbs. I plan to rent from Route 1 car rental or any other rental who offers fast WiFi.

Comfort and flexibility. 10 days in a hotel and about 5 days in camping. Is there a video on the channel talking about both options? Thanks! #FromBrazil 😊
Thank you for the tips. This just saved my brain as I spent 6hrs yesterday browsing through booking sites, agencies, vehicles, insurances and guessing how it will hold up to the elements. I booked just not through blue car and it was a breeze and I think very fair value after everything I went through yesterday. The only thing I would mention is their hours is that they open at 8AM at KEF location. Our flight gets in at 6:15AM so thats not too far off time. I'm happy with the booking process. Thanks for the tips!
I reviewed the video and why is Enterprise 2x the cost vs Blue Rental? What am I missing to compare apples to apples? Are there special other add ons I should know about for blue?
Hi, im traveling to Iceland late May Im a US Citizen with valid US Driving license Do i need International driving Permit, my car rental voucher says may be needed( not sure it is generic or even for US Citizens with valid Driving license i need one. Please help. Thanks in advance ☺️
I’m visiting for a week in November and staying at Hotel Ranga, where they offer a TON of excursions . Between the convenience of shuttles, the icy conditions, and the limited daylight hours, we are really trying to figure out if a rental makes sense for us. I’m reading conflicting info and feeling overwhelmed
Thank you for the Blue Car Rental recommendation. Here in the US and the midst of the pandemic I got nervous weather a car would be available when My cousin and I got to Iceland in May 2021. I had first booked on line with Expedia...then heard of all the cancellations and advice to go through the company direct. I called Blue and spoke to a great guy who assured me our 4wd/automatic would be there. Your discount helped too. We drove a brand new KIA Sportage over 3000Km in 2 weeks! They included a wifi hotspot that we could take into our Airbnb's...that was also an unexpected pleasure as not all the Air Bnb's had unlimited wifi. This was our 2nd trip, and I hope there will be more to come. With out your videos, I don't think we would have had the courage to take on these trips.
Waste of money .unless you travel directly to volcano .i declined all insurances traveled for 1 week you should see places i got to so don waste your money .get darker colour if you can .sad car was good
Hi, do you think it is a good idea to rent a car in the month of March if you are not experience with driving in winter conditions? Any tips on this regard :)
Hi Laura! Great question! I'm guessing that you're interested in going to the Westfjords in the summer, correct? If so, you should be fine in a medium-sized motohome/campervan. Many of the roads are rough which may make for an uncomfortable ride and be sure everything (and everyone) is secured but there is only one F-road that you'd be prevented from traveling on unless your campervan is a 4x4. Use my 10% discount code (IWV10) with Happy Campers to rent one of their campervans ~ bit.ly/ReserveHappyCampers ~!
I'm coming to Reykjavik next July and need a rental car from the port for just one day from 9am to 9pm! I can't seem to find something that would work and is near the port. Blue car has a minimum of 2 days. Any help??
sorry that i'm saying this... but with the premium insurance on the same vehicle on reykjavik cars and blue cars is it on reykjavik cars 25% cheaper. 1500 compared to 2000 for my trip
If my card covers all physical damage (I called them and they said they cover sand, ash, gravel, cdw, and theft), is it better to get them anyways or not? I think the card should cover it.
hey :) thank you for your great video!! we're going to iceland in april... what do you think about car insurance in this season - for example sand/ash...?
Best to check with your rental company - I’d hate to be responsible for your decision on that one because it can be expensive if there’s damage you have to pay for.

Hi Alfonso! No, an international driver license in NOT required to drive in Iceland. From Blue Car's website: "ARE ALL FOREIGN DRIVER'S LICENSE ACCEPTED? We at Blue Car Rental accept all foreign driver´s license as long as they are valid and can be read by our staff members (in English or at least with Latin characters). If not make sure to bring an International Driver´s License/Translation."
Hello, I am looking to rent a large SUV / AWD / Super Jeep big enough for 6 people to fit comfortably but having no luck finding something to match it. Do you have any recommendations where I might be able to find them. I have seen some large Super Jeeps in videos but cant find any rentals for them. Price is not the biggest concern, we just want to be able to travel comfortably. Thanks in advance.
The code should be working so make sure you use #LWV (all caps)...Let me know if that doesn't work, or you can check directly with Blue Car as well. They can adjust it for you.
You have to check with your credit card to get specifics and then make sure the rental company would let you decline their insurance. Every situation is different.
The Jimny shown in this vehicle is not good in high winds. I think if you’re going to feature a car, you should talk about the conditions in which the car is suitable.
got a quick question we are visiting next month : but if i hire a campervan , where do we take a bath and bathroom ? need your recommendation on that .
I have a question if you don't mind me asking.... I'm going to be 22 when I'll travel to Iceland so is it okay to rent a car or is there a specific age limit PS love ur channel thank you for your hard work 🙂
Do we need to add insurance if our credit cards have protection? I was always told through Visa Signature that we just deny the coverage and then they would cover anything with primary insurance through Visa Signature.

I went thru your VIP link and rented from Blue Car. I had a reservation thru Enterprise but got a better deal with BC, so cancelled my original reservation. Thank you for the reply!
Do you know of any rental companies that have motorhomes with seating/belts for 7. We have 4 adults and 3 small children. And would like one vehicle so we can take turn driving. But the motorhomes I’ve searched may sleep 7 but only have seat belts for 6. They said Icelandic law mandates everyone be seat belted when driving. Thanks
There are lots of choices for this; I would encourage you to do a search to see what works for your group. The companies are generally very good at helping you assess your needs.

@@IcelandwithaView Thx tons for your prompt reply, that will be of great help for me.
Hi Jeannie, Can you please make a video on Rental car insurance options? Thank you!
Another nice video :-) I would be really interested in one about Iceland car camping :-)
I will be releasing a camping video soon!
Thanks!
My preferred partner, Blue Car, has a whole fleet of EV cars to choose from. You can check them out here: bit.ly/IcelandCarDiscount
Super helpful video.
awesome video. quick question. is november a good month to visit iceland? like driving around the country?
Thanks for watching! November is getting short on daylight hours and can have some big storms, but it’s not a bad time to visit. Check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/XTy8eRQo5jU/v-deo.html
How fast (& reliable) is the Wifi in Iceland?? We need to be able to stream a math class for two hours a day. So hoping for at least 50 Mbs. I plan to rent from Route 1 car rental or any other rental who offers fast WiFi.
Hi there! Wi-Fi is great almost everywhere you'll want to go. I'm not certain on the Mbs exactly but a quick Google search will show you maps of coverage. Happy planning!
Hi Genie, love your videos!! Did you ended up making video on insurance I was not able to find in the playlist? Can you please point me to blog if you have something?
video has been payed by overpriced Blue Car Rental.
Thanks for the info. I couldn't find your insurance video. Did you end up making one?
Your channel is perfect! I want to watch them all.
I'm a photographer and I intend to stay for 15 days. I'm studying a lot about the island.
I'm thinking about doing a mix of hotel and camping. Comfort and flexibility. 10 days in a hotel and about 5 days in camping.
Is there a video on the channel talking about both options?
Thanks!
#FromBrazil 😊
Thank you! I'm glad you are enjoying the content and thank you for watching.
Are you sponsored by Blue or given free/discount rentals?
Thank you for the tips. This just saved my brain as I spent 6hrs yesterday browsing through booking sites, agencies, vehicles, insurances and guessing how it will hold up to the elements. I booked just not through blue car and it was a breeze and I think very fair value after everything I went through yesterday. The only thing I would mention is their hours is that they open at 8AM at KEF location. Our flight gets in at 6:15AM so thats not too far off time. I'm happy with the booking process. Thanks for the tips!
Is March considered winter? Should I get 4x4 in late March?
I reviewed the video and why is Enterprise 2x the cost vs Blue Rental? What am I missing to compare apples to apples? Are there special other add ons I should know about for blue?
Hi Sara! Great question! Here is my affiliate link with Blue Rental to help answer your question based on your preference! bit.ly/IcelandCarDiscount
Hi, im traveling to Iceland late May
Im a US Citizen with valid US Driving license
Do i need International driving Permit, my car rental voucher says may be needed( not sure it is generic or even for US Citizens with valid Driving license i need one.
What questions do you have about rental car INSURANCE for the future video??
Would love to know if Third Party Liability is included in rental prices
Would like to have advice on ash / sand and gravel protection! Thanks for your videos!
Waste of money .unless you travel directly to volcano .i declined all insurances traveled for 1 week you should see places i got to so don waste your money .get darker colour if you can .sad car was good
Thanks for the idea!
Hi, do you think it is a good idea to rent a car in the month of March if you are not experience with driving in winter conditions? Any tips on this regard :)
Can you do the Westfjords in a medium size motorhome?
Any help??
Great, informative video. We'll be checking out all of your others. Keep up the great work! 😁
Thank you!
You can taxi whereever. Airport, to grindavik, to rejvakvik. After that, take tour trips. Renting a car there is a pain in the ass.
sorry that i'm saying this... but with the premium insurance on the same vehicle on reykjavik cars and blue cars is it on reykjavik cars 25% cheaper. 1500 compared to 2000 for my trip
If my card covers all physical damage (I called them and they said they cover sand, ash, gravel, cdw, and theft), is it better to get them anyways or not? I think the card should cover it.
It's best to check with the rental car company directly as each one may have different options. 🙂
Fo all the icelandic f roads and river crosing its better a toyota land cruiser or a land rover defender 4X4?Which of these two would you suggest?
I personally love the Defender! ua-cam.com/video/cimPpAxH2Rk/v-deo.html
@@IcelandwithaView ok i agree maybe but i meant the new land rover defender 2022 not this older monster you drove
hey :) thank you for your great video!! we're going to iceland in april... what do you think about car insurance in this season - for example sand/ash...?
Best to check with your rental company - I’d hate to be responsible for your decision on that one because it can be expensive if there’s damage you have to pay for.
Ho Genie, can you suggest a good motorhome rental company because blue car rental doesn’t have them. Thank!
Hello discount link seems that does not give a discount. Could you please renew perhaps?
Hi Ioannis! Thanks for the comment and heads up. The link is working but I'm not sure why you're not seeing the discount. I'll look into it and get back with you soon!
@@IcelandwithaView I would be interested in that too, Jeannie. I plan on going in March. 🙌👍
Hi Jeannie!! I just booked a trip to Iceland and I already rented a car . Then, the car rental asked me for an International Driving Permit. I am from Puerto Rico. I have not Idea where can I get it.
Still looking for the discount code and link. I don’t see your answer to why the discount isn’t showing up.
Does google maps or apple maps work good enough? And it would be really great if you can give an estimate of the total petrol cost for ring road and golden circle included, thank you in advance
PS. I am planning a trip to the beautiful country in October 2023 from india
Hi there! Thanks so much for watching and subscribing! Google Maps is great almost everywhere! Apple Maps needs some improvement. Just make sure you have connection too the internet (check out this video for options on how to connect: icelandwithaview.com/5-wi-fi-internet-options-iceland/). Internet connectivity is strong and consistent in almost every area of Iceland you're planning to travel. Petrol cost will depend on the type of vehicle you're driving. Your route is roughly 1,500 km and petrol costs can be found here: www.globalpetrolprices.com/Iceland/gasoline_prices/ ~ Be sure to check out my website for even more planning resources, travel guides, maps with all the places I recommend, pre-written itineraries, and even custom itinerary planning services (icelandwithaview.com/). Happy planning!
I can't see the discount code for Blue Renatl
Are you renting a car to travel around Iceland?
Yes..i don't think the coupon code is working you provided in vdo details.
voidabinitio you have to use the hashtag!
Yes and thx for showing me this video because I found a 2018 beautiful Renault traffic but not my type
Hi Iceland with a View! Amazing channel! This just came up on time. I would like to hire a vehicle, but all rentals I have found have a pick up point in Keflavik Airport. I am arriving to Reykjavík Airport, would you suggest any particular car rental company?
this was super helpful! When Im in iceland I want you there lol
What is helpful about a bias reccomendation?
Kim Caspar i really like her vids. She’s great but I’m sorry u don’t like this vid. There are plenty more videos on UA-cam though and I’m sure you’ll find some that you really enjoy. Hope you have a great day
I will be in Reykjavik in 3 weeks and I will drive from there to selfoss... Should I get a 2w or 4w drive?
Zack Locke A 2w will do just fine.
Agreed!
I tried your link but it’s the same price as on my laptop. Is there a code I have to use? They come up the same price.
I'd suggest either clearing your cache or use a different browser to see the different pricing.
in 2023? is not required international driver's license? i am from Mexico
Hi Alfonso! No, an international driver license in NOT required to drive in Iceland. From Blue Car's website:
"ARE ALL FOREIGN DRIVER'S LICENSE ACCEPTED?
Is the discount code no longer in effect? It doesn't work (I'm using the hashtag)- anything changed? Thanks
Looking to book soon, I would like to know if you were able to use the coupon code provided
The code should be working so make sure you use #LWV (all caps)...Let me know if that doesn't work, or you can check directly with Blue Car as well. They can adjust it for you.
@@IcelandwithaView I emailed Blue and they said that they are not currently running any discount codes and have non that are valid at this time.
If my credit card already includes collision and accidental insurance for car rentals, am I still required to get their insurance? Thanks!!
You have to check with your credit card to get specifics and then make sure the rental company would let you decline their insurance. Every situation is different.
Hi. Thanks for the informative videos you put out. Do you still have a discount code for Blue Car Rentals please? Thanks
The Jimny shown in this vehicle is not good in high winds. I think if you’re going to feature a car, you should talk about the conditions in which the car is suitable.
The so cald big rig I'd like breittur jeppi on Icelandic
Did they sponsor you?
got a quick question we are visiting next month : but if i hire a campervan , where do we take a bath and bathroom ? need your recommendation on that .
hey harp campsites and stores 🌝
Your camvpervan company should give you a map of the campsites and it should state which ones have showers on site.
I have a question if you don't mind me asking.... I'm going to be 22 when I'll travel to Iceland so is it okay to rent a car or is there a specific age limit PS love ur channel thank you for your hard work 🙂
Great question! You'll definitely want to check with the rental car company directly on that. Happy travels!
You have to be 20 years old to rent a car and 23 to rent the big cars so you’ll be good with a normal car
What is the discount code for Blue Car Rental?
Mind explaining why noone is buying sand & ash? Was this option added after the volcano eruption 10'?
and btw your referral code is not working.
Is 4x4 Duster appropriate in February ( Keflavik, Reykjavik, blue lagoon)? Thanks
Is the ring road and map a PDF file? I cannot find it on my Apple site.
Do we need to add insurance if our credit cards have protection? I was always told through Visa Signature that we just deny the coverage and then they would cover anything with primary insurance through Visa Signature.
You have to check with your credit card to get specifics and then make sure the rental company would let you decline their insurance. Every situation is different.
Asking like many others… Where is the link or discount code?
No code needed when you go through my VIP link on my website ❤️
I went thru your VIP link and rented from Blue Car. I had a reservation thru Enterprise but got a better deal with BC, so cancelled my original reservation. Thank you for the reply!
Bottom Line at 7:30
Hey...i am an indian, so will my driver's license be valid there? It is in english and has my photo on it too!...So will it be valid??
helllo nice video.....its my dream to do ring road trip of iceland....thanks for info..cheers from India.. :)
Thanks for watching!
Can you tell me which camper company iceland is best??? Happy or kuku or any other ??
Thanks! I love you😊👍
Would you recommend the ring road in December w/ an AWD Subaru?
Always depends on how many days! Watch my 2wd vs 4wd video.
where would the best place be to hirer a 4x4 camper for 2 adults and a child in july august time??
Minimum age to rent a vehicle and things required to do it
Also, booked a rental car through Green Motion. Good company?
What do you think about travelling to iceland as a family...with a 4 and 6 year old?
What do you mean by Wifi device? I thought all phones had at least 3G/4G built in, so why bother renting a device?
Do you know of any rental companies that have motorhomes with seating/belts for 7. We have 4 adults and 3 small children. And would like one vehicle so we can take turn driving. But the motorhomes I’ve searched may sleep 7 but only have seat belts for 6. They said Icelandic law mandates everyone be seat belted when driving. Thanks
There are lots of choices for this; I would encourage you to do a search to see what works for your group. The companies are generally very good at helping you assess your needs.
Where is the discount code?
Awesome. That new Suzuki Jimny is my favorite vehicle! I was wondering if I could rent one when I went there in November. Since they dont exist in the US. :)
We loved the Jimny! Such a great vehicle and so photogenic ;)
Very helpful
I really messed - my auto rental has poor reviews and 1 star ratings. Ugh! Not sure if I should cancel as my trip is a week from now. Found Jeannie too late!
If I am coming from the U.S. do I need to get a different sim card for my iphone to get signal and accurate directions in iceland? Ive read about problems somewhere else.
Brandon Smith Media following.
Yes you will need a local SIM card to get signal.
Brandon Smith Media I have Verizon. They also have a plan that says it will work in Iceland. It does say speed may be dropped to 2G
Is it true that you need a license with at least 12 months?
