During Vince McMahon's Attitude Era, there was an idea to do a legit boxing tournament called the Brawl for All. The pitch was made by Vince Russo, who wanted to see John Bradshaw Layfield get knocked out in real life.
Find out why Dan Severn entered the tournament after being told he was ineligible. Also, hear what Ken Shamrock believes was really going on behind the scenes.
Coincidentally, the Brawl for All also ended the careers of Dr. Death Steve Williams, and in many ways, the winner as well, Bart Gunn.

Because he was smart, he avoided loads of strikes to the head in early MMA by being a wrestler who would just take you down

More like what kind of personalities they are-Dan will talk all day about himself and his perspective, humble bragging. Shamrock seems a little more thoughtful.
Same, however the thing was a dumpster fire before it got started, at that point im sure Dan would have hated the idea of the boxing gloves.

ECW already had got me going to live shows if I was in Philly but when I saw that Severn and Shamrock were in WWF is when I went full tilt into my second love affair with pro-wrestling. Mid to late 90s was a great time.

Work, shoot, whatever. The Brawl For All could've and should've made a superstar out of its winner, Bart Gunn. I legit think his handling afterwards is the absolute worst thing Vince Russo ever did in the WWF
I'd always heard it's because he pissed off Jim Ross by beating Steve Williams. not sure how true that is though.
@@jreese2474 JR tried so hard to get Williams hired, vouching for him only to have Bart Gunn kill any momentum he may have had. I would imagine JR was extremely upset, no doubt.
Bart Gunn wasn't even supposed to win. Vince Russo is trash
BART could have easily played an impressionable henchman with lethal power for Vince.
Supposedly the idea came about when Vince Russo thought about it cause JBL kept mouthing off that if this was real he'd beat everyone. So Russo said OK let's see about that. I really think Russo had a role in coming up with it because it was so off the wall like his style.

Unbelievable these guys have 167 MMA fights between them, one can only guess how many rounds sparred, have took endless pro wrestling bumps and yet they both still speak really well and are great to listen to 👍
I like how Ken completely acknowledges that Dan would have won no problem but the way they way they went about it was a farce. Respect amongst warriors

Interesting video , very cool Dan Severn and Ken Shamrock to talk about this strange tournament. I agree both of them would have whooped everybody if they participated. I think Severn was asked and kind of confirmed in the beginning ; because WWE felt they needed actual fighters to make the tournament more "legitimate". Brawl for All will remain one of the strange promotions by WWE to shake up the action.
Dan did take part and struggled with Godfather. The big boxing gloves and rules were not good for Severn (a pure grappler).
Dan never had good hands. He was a pure wrestler.

I think the only three id see in the final was Dan, Ken, and Steve mufuggin Blackman.
Remember they had friggin boxing gloves on, and there were no wins or points via submission holds. So in the end it favored a heavy handed striker like Bart Gunn. If it was a true no holds barred match those three guys would win any match (not facing each other) in seconds.

And then, bro, we have him lose a fake fight, bro! But SWERVE! He admits it was fake and he's tired of playing in these fake fights, bro! He wants a real fight for the title, bro! But SWERVE! My guess is they initially wouldn't allow Dan or Ken in it knowing they have so much more experience either one of them would dominate and bury everyone. But they turned to Dan last minute cause someone was a late scratch, either injury or they had 2nd thoughts and would have asked Ken if Dan said no.
Yes but guys like Dan were hampered by the rule set of brawl for all. They had to wear boxing gloves and only takedowns were allowed. It was an odd rule structure. I don’t think Ken would have done well either

This is quite something interesting to see. And they are quite right in the regard to Vince “exposing” wrestling through that.
Though it would have been pretty cool to see like Dan, Ken and Blackmen in a real fight. Even through the lens of WWF (or E…) you can see how tough and dangerous all three were

That night , bart was unstoppable . They trained him to " proper " box butterbeer and he lost.
He never had a prayer of beating Butterbean. If he threw punches like he did in the Brawl for All he would of got KO’d the same way. Putting a guy with almost zero boxing experience against a guy with 50 pro fights, he has no chance
@@Provos7777 The funny thing is both Bart and Butterbean were fine with working the match but the higher up knuckleheads in the company actually thought they could have a legit shoot fight. Stupid.
They "butterbeaned" him because he beat the guy they wanted to win in Steve Williams. Bart was set up to lose because of that

So glad they didn’t take part in it (well Dan had one fight) but it did sound like a set up cause to them if one of the wrestlers could possibly knock out legit fighters that would bring more ratings and possibly legitimize this shit show of an idea Vince Russo had. Man oh man though even without much training I know they both a long with Blackman would of ran through everyone especially with takedowns a lone. Judging by what I seen in some of the fights it wouldn’t of been that difficult to win against most of those guys lol

I loved the brawl for all it showed which wrestlers were legit badasses and which ones weren't
And the real badass (Bart Gunn) got screwed the most, go figure.
The urban legend is it was to legitimize Dr. Death Steve Williams and set him up to go against stone cold for the title. But he tore a hammy in the match with Bart Gunn and kept going literally becoming a one legged man in an ass kicking contest.
I didn't think it showed anyone up, they all gave it 100%.

Why do a legit shoot fight when you are 99% sure these guys are going to be in the final? And why pit professional MMA fighters against pro wrestlers who are not trained to fight? This sounds dangerous.
No-one could be sure of that. Vega, Blackman and Mero all had striking skillset, Williams and Severn were wrestlers, everyone else had a punchers chance, in a format that heavily favoured punchers over grapplers.
Either Steve Blackman or Dan Severn would have won the Brawl for All if they hadn't withdrawn from the tournament. However, Ken Shamrock would have got knocked out and he just likes to blow his own trumpet.
Doc was the odds on favourite & who the company thought would win-he was killing Bart Gunn before the freak injury that left him a sitting duck. He was so freakishly strong & a great wrestler who pinned Dan in college.
@@daveborder7751 He wasn't killing Bart Gunn before he got injured. Bart Gunn had taken him down thrice and had landed some heavy hands. Dr Death couldn't throw a punch to save his life.
@@chaoticdays Williams was winning handily on points. He only went down when the injury happened. Why would a guy at Olympic level amateur wrestler be boxing with a guy with boxing skills?
@@daveborder7751 the scorecards were deliberately rigged to give Williams the victory, and this was echoed by wrestlers who were watching backstage. Watch Bob Holly's interview. That is why the entire locker room erupted when Doc hit the ground.
Blackman barely beat Mero and didn’t throw a single strike. He kept going for takedowns. If he was afraid of Meros hands he would’ve lost to Godfather or Gunn.

I'm talking about they stayed on their feet both Severn and Shamrock I believe would get knocked out by Bart Gunn and they would probably both think they would kill him because they were from the UFC but they weren't the best strikers and Bart just had that raw ability and WWF dropped the ball to make a new star with him.
@@dannythedon82 I know what you're trying to say, but I think you're underestimating these two. Cardio alone would make them so much more efficient, faster and powerful. Bart was like a bodybuilder with real technique (yes he could punch a non fighter who was gassed)
That’s if he could land a shot. He fought oafs who couldn’t get out of their own way. In an MMA fight, Shamrock would of submitted him in under a minute. Severn would of laid & prayed. Straight boxing - I think he definitely hit hard enough to KO either of them, Idk if Bart had the skill level to actually land a KO punch against two seasoned guys

Kinda sounds like shamrock is making excuses for Dan, even if they did ask him the night he was actually trained in fighting, wrestlers can't train afew m9nths and then be fighting machines, look at what happened to CM punk when he went over to ufc, got smashed and that was after nearly a whole year training and he fought a nobody, poor excuse kinda sounds like there trying to save face
