Triangle Strategy: A Mixed Masterpiece

  • While 2022 will always be remembered as the year of Elden Ring, one game stands out as an incredibly polished yet occasionally polarizing title of that year- Triangle Strategy.
Some corrections I didn't notice while recording:
-Serenoa is not the heir of Glenbrook (that would be Roland), just House Wolfort.
-In Agarest War, the overworld encounters are not random; there is a set number you encounter in between each dialogue episode, which is... quite worse.

What you said at @10:50 about the characters' absence being felt in the gameplay is so on point.
    SPOILERS...
    .......
In the Utility ending route, you lose your fire mage and end up fighting against Aesfrost, who's mages and archers are all weak to Fire. (Mitigated a bit of you have Narve)
In the Liberty Route, you fight the first 2 stages on an open field against enemy horsemen, who are weak to spear attacks. But you lost your only spear user. (unless you recruited the Dawnspear, but his requirements are high).
And on the Morality route, the final stage is an escort mission, but you lost the tactician character who can buff the NPCs' movement speed.
I thought this was a great way to make you feel the loss of those important characters in the gameplay.

I’ve wanted people to talk about this game forever. I gave it a miss after hearing reviews, especially hearing about how linear progression was. What I wasn’t expecting was how tightly designed the levels were, and how every party member was viable and had their specific uses in certain situations.
It’s one of the only games where I’ve completed all of New Game+ right after beating it the first time, especially without any trophy incentive. The new secret playable characters were definitely worthwhile

I get the rich cake metaphor. I absolutely adored my first playthrough, but the last thing I wanted to do was play it again. I was worried I’d take the experience for granted and wanted to savor the remaining play throughs. Now 2 years later I’m preparing for my second playthrough and it might be my most anticipated thing this year.

you can actually get the true ending first if you make the "right" choices
Albeit the path itself is ridiculously difficult if its your first attempt since it was probs wasn't intended for 1st runs
Getting the true ending on your first attempt however feels soooo satisfying

Perfect recommendation. I've been sitting on triangle strategy since release after being scared off by the number of proper nouns in the first cutscene. Really needed a breakdown like this to see if it was worth indulging into. Also, I enjoy your humor and "good shitty" editing.

Triangle strategy is probably my favorite game of the past decade, glad to see another's appreciation. A few things, I did not know there was an update (thank you! Would have hated to miss it), you do not need to complete all other routes before golden, you could do it first try if you got lucky (though if you are doing it without a guide you probably need to play about 3 times taking different paths to see how to do it). On the first run through before accessing new game plus and seeing the nuts and bolts of how the decision system works it felt almost magical, the things you say and do actually changing the game and not in the dumb "evil 'cause I feel like it vs unambiguously moraly perfect" but actually interesting ethical decisions with uncertain but reasonable responses, it is the most I have ever felt a game giving me actual agency. I could go on but should stop.

Great video. I share a similar perspective where I played through the game once, thought it was pretty solid, but even after i moved on to other games I kept thinking about it Triangle Strategy more amd more fondly over the last year. Then I went back and got all 4 endings and now i really appreciate it as one of the best Square Enix games in quite a while. And i think it easily carves out its own spot as one of the greats of this sub-genre.
If we got a Triangle Strategy 2 someday it would be an instant buy for me.

It's so strange to me as an old-school Final Fantasy Tactics fan to hear random encounters identified as a problem in a TRPG.
Granted, I last played FFT when I was a kid with what seemed like infinite time in which to grind for whatever nonsense build I was trying to make or monster I was trying to recruit, and granted, in systems with less customization of characters, those sorts of battles are less necessary. But to hear them brushed off as entirely heretical shows me how much the genre has changed since my childhood.

I also find myself appreciating this game more and more as time goes on. It's just missing one thing that keeps it from GOAT status and that is team attacks like the ones in Suikoden tactics or Stella Deus on ps2. Team attacks add another layer of risk and reward gameplay to srpgs that gives the player incentive to constantly try different, risky and innovative new strategies. Triangle Strategy was supposed to include a team attack system originally but the developers dropped it for some reason which keeps this game from being a masterpiece imo

Fantastic review/overview. 👏 It was interesting to see you make the comparisons between Triangle Strategy and Record of Agarest War. I've played the latter and had to eventually give it up due to the slow pace. Progress was more of an endurance test than an actually fun experience, though I liked some aspects of that game. After watching this I'm much more inclined to buy Triangle Strategy in the future despite a kind of mixed experience with SRPGs overall. Sounds like an outstanding title overall.

That's a nice video of an equally nice game.
It struck a cord with me, that you seem to be very keen for some good and deeper tactical RPG's, so I must leave a suggestion here:
The game I'm speaking of is Jagged Alliance 2, for me, as I tirelessly try to find a better game, I just can't find one that even came close to its depth, even the vanilla version (V1.02 - 06.1999), which I love to play every summer and winter, there's just nothing that could come to it's vicinity.
can't say much about the mods that been cooking since the early 2000s till now.
Unfortunately, even to tackle those you need to actually play the vanilla a couple of times, Gold version is what it's called now.
    have fun dude.
edit: there's no point for me to elaborate, When you start feeling it, you'll know, but even after that, the game will surprise you with things you've never thought about that could be possible, and that'll just be touching the surface. and that's still the vanilla. in 1.13 mod that overhauls the whole system to be more complex, that mod is compatible with all the other mods that gives even more.

You had me at rich, and at stand the test of time. Sounds amazing!
While I very much like the genre, I am not what you'd call an SRPG junkie, probably because it's rare for me to find one I truly love. Now I will say that the first one I ever played, aka Final Fantasy Tactics, had me so absolutely & hopelessly hooked at the time that I literally spent most of the time in my room during my family vacation simply because I could not pry myself away from it.
Not many games over my lifetime have hooked me in like that game did. Another was the self titled Fire Emblem for GBA. My god did I LOVE that game!! Those are the only two I can think of that had that sort of effect on me though, and I've played many SRPG's since then & none have done it quite as well as FFT or Fire Emblem.
I have played each & every Fire Emblem since by the way, and still none have measured up to FE7 for me. The character Jaffar sticks out in my head about the game most of all. Loved his character so much that I seriously considered getting the same Tattoo he has on his arm 😅.
From what I've heard though, this game may have a chance at having that same sort of effect on me. Am looking forward to it!

parts of this game just feel like like a visual novel and have a big gap between combat situations. I like good story writing and branching paths being a fan of visual novels but when you want to play SRPG, you kinda wanna play it without holding the fast forward button.

You are wrong about the Golden Ending ; it doesn't require to have all three endings done, only to hit certain goals in one playthrough (not using the wildfire traps of your hometown, trafficking the salt to meet the Aefrost border captain, going to visit Seraona's father out of the three options, and I think protecting the Roselle ?).
It can, in fact, be your very first ending, though it gets easier the more playthrough you have as it requires you to split your army in three parties for some of the most difficult map in the game and you only get all 30 characters on a third playthrough.

But really they were just asking me to devote to much time to all the dialogue when I really just wanted some fun tactical jRPGs with some beautiful pixel art. I hate being that guy, but… it’s blatant misinformation to say that you need to finish even one of the default three endings to do the Golden Ending; to get it as an option you need to make a handful of correct choices across the story. In fact a few people have unlocked it by sheer chance, as they happened to build the right Conviction to make some difficult votes (particularly the salt smuggling one) work; many of these didn’t even know these were the correct choices, although for the most part unless you’re using a guide it’s easy to miss one of them.
[For fun times, surrendering Roland actually makes it easier because you get some Utility for later, but also because it guarantees you haven’t used the Wolffort wildfire…]
A lesser note is that Serenoa isn’t the heir of his kingdom, he’s the heir of the highest noble house of Glenbrook; his BFF is Roland, who… yeah, more in line there.
