To show my age, whenever I see the Vienna game I think immediately of Weaver Adams and his book, "White to Play and win," in which he claimed this opening gave White a forced win; his view was skewered by Larry Evans in his 1970 book, "Chess Catechism," of which I still have a dog-eared paperback copy. Great play by Anand--thanks for showing this!

As a big fan of the Vienna gambit, after 5. Ng7, Nf3 is even better than d4. You stop the check and you have a massive lead in development, you’re threatening Nd5 with a tempo on the queen and threatening the knight fork on c7 and your opponent will be forced to react to your threats the rest of the game, until you checkmate them. They’re pretty much lost the moment they accept the gambit.

When I was 12 I played in an U16 tournament that was a serious event with cash prizes.
The year before my friend who was the U16 British champion won it with 7 1/2 out of 8, the highest score ever.
I won it with 8/8, the first person to do it in the 100+ years the tournament had been running.
I needed some serious luck to win the final game.
