It turns out that it's the year 1493, and not 1619, that we need to go back to in order to understand America's problem with racism. It was that year that the Doctrine of Discovery was created which allowed the enslavement and stealing of lands of people who were not Christian.
It was thought that by giving Native Americans European civilization and Christianity, that was payment enough for their land and anything else they had.
