  • Footage of preserved steam-hauled trains around Barton and Broughton, north of Preston on the West Coast Mainline, filmed between 2010 and 2017. Locomotives featured include:
    - 46233 Duchess Of Sutherland (LMS Stanier Princess Coronation);
    - 46115 Scots Guardsman (LMS Stanier Royal Scot);
    - 45690 Leander (LMS Stanier Jubilee);
    - 45699 Galatea (LMS Stanier Jubilee);
    - 45407 The Lancashire Fusilier (LMS Stanier Black 5);
    - 44871 (LMS Stanier Black 5);
    - 45231 The Sherwood Forester (LMS Stanier Black 5);
    - 48151 (LMS Stanier 8F).
    - 60009 Union Of South Africa (LNER Gresley A4, sister to 4468 Mallard);
    - 61264 (Thompson B1).
    The locomotives were hauling a variety of workings including:
    - The Fellsman;
    - Cumbrian Mountain Express;
    - Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express;
    - The Great Britain VI;
    - Loaded Test Runs;
    - One-off excursions.
    Barton and Broughton (down goods loop) is located 4-5 miles north of Preston railway station on the West Coast Mainline. The former station, which was located to the north of the loop, closed in steam days, prior to the electrification of this section of the WCML in 1972. Originally built as the Lancaster and Preston Joint Railway in 1840, this section of railway was later subsumed by the London and North Western Railway, and continues to form an essential link on one of the country's primary express routes. Barton and Broughton are 2 separate villages located on the A6 between Preston and Garstang.

    In the spirit of comedian Bob Hope’s lifetime theme song “Thanks for the memories”. Video goes down smoother than a shot ofJack Daniels. Classic presentation as always. Thanks!

    Yet again outstanding stuff. Cheers me up during these strange times. Cheers.
    Saw the Duchess at Exeter last year during a service stop so managed to get close & personal.
    What a masterpiece of engineering..

      Thank you very much Barry, much appreciated and there's nothing like a bit of 'steam therapy'! I quite agree, the Duchesses were/are true masterpieces. Many thanks, David.

    My word, you bring back the memories! I was at College near Garstang and once saw the "Pilling Pig" Wonderful stuff, thanks David.

      Many thanks Alan, much appreciated. Was that Myerscough? What a small world we live in, and I'm amazed that you've seen the Pilling Pig, quite a claim to fame round these parts!

      Myerscough was just a plan when I left - it was at Winmarleigh that I was educated! Just a mile or two West of Garstang. The Pilling Pig was on its last legs then, too.

      Many thanks as ever Bob, much appreciated. It's a shame that the Fellsman no longer heads this way, it presented an enjoyable morning or evening jaunt.

    Quality as ever David, not really filmed around that area but after this in sure I will be soon. I remember being on a Fellsman behind 45231 and we were looped at Barton to let a few passenger trains past us .

    • @Linesider1
      @Linesider1  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks Steve, The Fellsman was pathed to call in there and sometimes did, sometimes didn't. Great t hat we can see 45231 again but would probably prefer it to be a Carnforth engine.

      Many thanks Austin, a local haunt over the years. I have fond memories of seeing 46229 either side of the loop on its last run in 1996, but alas I didn't have a video camera.

    It’s rewind to the 1960s when the duchesses took over the west coast mainline alongside the princess royal locos

      Thanks Scott, yes the Duchesses were all withdrawn by 1964, so it's great to be able to recall those times every now and then.

    Excellent footage with the one possible improvement being to always show the whole of the train, please. Too many shots have the last couple of cars not showing.
    If we are ever let out of our island continent 20000 km away, I'll be returning to UK to do more than the three heritage and most main/branch lines I've already travelled on. Thinking of and more importantly at Mass praying for you in UK during your month long lockdown (which many believe is ineffective).

      Many thanks Edmund, very much appreciated. With regards to the 'show all of the carriages passing or not' conundrum; Funnily enough, I have received exactly the opposite comment before (i.e. 'please don't show it all passing'). I deliberately cut some of these shots early bearing in mind the overall flow, and repetition, but respect your opinion on the matter.
      Thank you very much for your best wishes - here's hoping that the vaccine is effective and can be made widely available, but we shall see. I hope you are keeping well in your neck of the woods! Thanks again, David.

      @@Linesider1 David, many Australians would consider that the UK has the best mainline (and tourist/heritage) rail scene worldwide. While my city of Melbourne in normal times has 'Puffing Billy', the world's highest patronised steam heritage railway at now almost 500000 trips per annum, we don't have 217 tourist railways like you do/did, nor the amount of marvellous main line steam operation, the latter of which I have only done one trip that was through Blackburn, UK (not the same suburb in my city!)
      You would be surprised at how all these UK steam videos (and diesel ones) attract a worldwide audience. Your sequences are terrific. When lockdown ceases, please keep up the good work.

    • @Linesider1
      @Linesider1  3 роки тому +1

      Many thanks again, Edmund - very much appreciated. I will try my best, it is easy to forget how rich the scene is in the UK, and particularly the Northwest in terms of mainline steam. I hope you enjoyed your trip through Blackburn, I have joined and alighted several tours there over the years.
