Great German Shepherd . Most aren’t real fond of swimming but they get used to it after a while. I’ve had many dogs through my decades living in Hawaii. Always two at a time, I once had a German Shepherd who outlived his older buddy who was a Collie. Neither liked the water much so I decided to get a tiny black lab puppy for Kimo the shepherd to raise. Kimo took his responsibility seriously and kept the young lab “Koa” out of trouble. Taught him how to fetch a stick, showed him what dogs do. Weekends are beach days with the dogs and this would be Koa’s first time seeing the ocean. As soon as little Koa’s feet touched the sand and he saw the ocean, he started running right toward it. Kimo cut him off before he got there and scolded him. “That’s water! It’s wet. You’ll drown. Stay away from there.” Koa looked at his uncle Kimo like there was something wrong with him? “Of course that’s water. I’m a water-dog. I can swim. I HAVE to swim!” So my girlfriend held onto Kimo while I let Koa discover his mission in life. He wasn’t like other dogs, who’d run to the edge as the wave ran out, then run away to avoid getting their feet wet as the wave came back, he just charged right into the waves. He got rolled into the beach by the shorebreak and with a big grin on his face, charged right into the ocean again. He was determined to get passed these pesky waves and get to swimming. I helped him out by carrying past the waves and setting him in the water. He was swimming like he’d done it for years. Kimo was on the beach, barking and having a fit that his nephew wasn’t ready for this and everyone is gonna die. Koa ignored all the commotion and started swimming out to sea, bound for Molokai. I kept turning him back, but Kimo had finally had enough of this nonsense and decided to rescue us. (I never seen him swim this far out) He was coming for his friend. So to spare his misplaced concern, I walked us back in. “Thanks for rescuing us Kimo. That was a close one.” As Koa got older and the beach weekends continued, Kimo finally decided he needed to be a man and get comfortable in the ocean. There’s no way he could convince Koa to give up swimming, so fetching the stick meant throwing it as far in the ocean as possible. Koa would always win that race so Kimo always cheated. He’d try to trip Koa or block him but there’s no beating a black lab in the water. So Koa would always get the stick and Kimo would wait til he got close and grab half the stick so they swam in together. Kimo always got half credit. Anyway, that black lab got my shepherd to actually like the water. Sort of. Yours is beautiful and thanks for reminding me of this story.
He's very sweet 😍. Did very well with stairs. The other pool he assessed that he wasn't sure how he would get out. Looks like you guys had a good time 😀
