  • On Spokenspanner in this third episode in the restoration of this classic 1979 BMW R80/7 after finding it takes more than just a charged battery and fresh fuel to start a 43 year old bike we delve into the starter motor problems. Other ignition problems are solved and shockingly the bike starts for the first time. Next episode we get into the front end rebuild and immerse ourselves in hard chrome plating.

Thoroughly enjoying your videos of this BMW R80/7. It's well presented and the filming is intricate enough to see what is going on. Plus, my Border Collie Isla sits and watches just to see your Sally..👍

Thanks John, that's really great, I try and strike a balance between entertainment and properly practical help. Nice to hear about your Border Collie. The next BMW video on the front end rebuild is on its way.

Wish I still had my R80/7. Mocked it up like a R90S. PUT R100 Jugs on it,braced the swing arm,Lester mags, Alfabet 2into One,drilled airbox.R90S faring .Best Motorcycle I ever owned.

Sounds fantastic, the R80/7 is arguably the smoothest and nicest ride of the airheads, enough power but not stressed so long lived and the heavy flywheel was much better for the low down torque than the clutch carrier that came later. Had to take a break but another video is on the way.

Having replaced the original Bosch starter in my R50/5 I know how difficult they are to get out! I bit the bullet and went for a non-original Nippondenso replacement, which appears to weigh about half the Bosch and is used in Toyota pick-ups. I also swapped out the points for a Boyer electronic ignition unit, again not original but life is too short! 😊

Hi Steve, that is interesting, having read about the interference issues and for authenticity I wanted to stay with a Bosch unit... Like a Bosch! although the weight saving you refer to is always welcome, I put a Lithium Ion battery in my R1200 and it significantly reduced the weight when lifting off the stand. On the ignition front as you saw, replacing the points and gapping them resulted in an instant start - initially on one cylinder and I was so shocked I forgot to keep the plug grounded other than through me. As it all seems to work so well and the bike miles are so low I thought I would stick with the standard setup and the benefits of being able to complete roadside repairs. I know a lot of owners with electronic ignition also carry their old bean can in case of trouble. Time will tell when it is on the road as to whether components fail on age rather than mileage, the selenium rectifier is one concern but I have read that they tend to expire on extent of use rather than age. Once it is up and running I shall also try out some mods such as the pulse jet ignition and see if I can make some dyno and subjective assessments as to the benefits. So far the only mod I am planning to fit during the refurb are damping rubbers between the fins as this was done on later mods by BMW themselves.

Hi there, thank you for your comment, next BMW video on the fork rebuild is coming out soon, I will be looking at how to align the forks and busting some myths. Had to break off to fix the clutch on a young friend's Ninja 125 to keep them on the road and living the dream of motorcycling.

Would'a looked a lot better if your table wasn't an impressionist fever-dream ;-)

Nice video. I would personally prefer hearing the spanning and screwing to canned music, but perhaps I am alone in this.

Are you saying you would prefer no music and listen to your own in the background, its a difficult one but on the later videos the music is quieter and less intrusive so hope that's ok

Everything is okay, I just personally prefer to hear the real sounds of the work, rather than music. @@SpokenSpanner
