Thank you! There are some embarrassing bits in the full, 8 minute version. Like, bad acting. Also, I did embed some music that would get me a copyright strike for unauthorized usage. Back when I made it, some samples were fine. Nowadays, not so much. So I really can't post it unless I made some significant changes to the beginning. Which would be a massive amount of work.
Holy shit this hit home. I've never read or heard of this, but God that hit me. All of it. The whole thing, the comic itself, the small clip from your short. I've got to read this now
It's funny how little things like this express the importance of art as therapy. I can compare this to something I've read called Maximum Minimum Wage by events in there relating to things that happened in my life. And how they tend to be celebrated, awarded even, but get overlooked unlike the people looking for escapes. Which to be fair isn't a bad thing; Mark Russell's Superman Space Age showed how little pleasures like that can be a source of strength to get through strifes.
Thank you for another fantastic video and sharing your film. Now a days I think everyone feels the soul crushing work days and being a number some company. And never being recognize real work. Keep up the good work
Happy Belated Birthday Allan! I was lucky enough to find your fantastic videos just before covid started and I'm glad to leave my first comment as my present to you lo
All the stuff I was planning to comment was mentioned in your video. I didn't realize there was a fourth edition. I started this with Taboo. It's such a departure from Nicholson's previous work in Ultra Klutz. This is a book that clearly was on his mind for a while, and the one he keeps returning to. It doesn't get more personal than this.
Can't believe you make quality videos at such a frequent pace that are so well-informed on the comic book industry. Will keep Through the Habitrails in mind when looking for an indie comic to read. Also, nice short film at the end.
There's an issue of The Dreaming that *must've* been done by Nicholson. It's thematically very similar to this, culminating with the protagonist passing out into the Dreaming after a failed attempt to take his own life, and (basically) becoming an adherent of "the Pumpkin Man". I'll verify that when my roommate wakes up and I can get into his comics stash. The art too is unmistakeable, and now I'm vaguely lamenting having lost a comics collection and whatever book I'd first seen him in. Anyways, thank you for all the work you put into these. Edit: And, happy birthday! May you have many lovely years to come🙏
A nice profile of Through the Habittrails, which was lost amidst the plethora of personal comics published in the 90s. Despite its liminal nature, it’s subject and themes were horrifyingly real. Glad to see it given deserving attention
Another good video my good sir. I'll add this to my reading list. Sounds perfect for me since i am possibly having a career crisis atm and sees how mundane my job is really needs me to push forward. I like realism that doesn't seem pretentious but done with honest intentions. Again really good video and thanks for the personal take you have of it.
I was already a huge Ultra Klutz fan in the early 90's. I was first exposed to this story through a preview chapter in the back of an issue of Cerebus, which I read regularly but was probably too young to really understand. I currently own editions #1 and #3 of this book. I assumed that edition #4 was just a new printing of #3. Is it worth buying #4 if I already have #3? Did he add the cat lover story back in? By the way, one of my favorite Jeff Nicholson comics is called Jeff Nicholson's Small Press Tirade. It was originally released in the early 90's as a self-published mini comic. It has since been reprinted in a compilation with some of Jeff's other work and in a Fantagraphics omnibus of small press comics. Have you read it? It may be an acquired taste. It's mostly Jeff ranting about the 80's small press and indy comics scene. I really enjoy your videos. Have you covered anything by Dan Clowes or do you have any plans to?
I have read Small Press Tirade! It might be a good thing to review at some point because it's a good time capsule of the mid-late 80's mini comics scene. I have yet to cover any Clowes. But I probably will at some point. It's a matter of sitting down and rereading it to refreshen it in my mind.
very interesting, I will give a look when I can for sure. it reminds, or at least shares some themes, goodnight punpun, a manga about a character that struggles with depressions and functioning in society and has some very disturbing content but that is relatable despite being surreal
I MUST now read this. Fantastic video, and happy birthday! Edit: bought it. Should arrive soon. I'm glad I got a later edition, I just lost my life long cat and I don't think I could stand the cat chapter right now. Reading Hairball at the moment is hard enough.
Thank you and thank you. Considering your recent loss, I think the Cat Lover chapter would be where you might put the book down for good. It is kind of rough and honest.
@@StrangeBrainParts Finished reading this last night, such a fantastic piece of work! It's striking and profound in the most uncomfortable way. It's hard not to see parts of your own life in this work. Thank you for remaking this video, I'd have never read this without it.
Did Jeff Nicholson ever see and react to your original review and/or the unauthorized adaptation? I have not read this work, but it's interesting to compare to his earlier Ultraman parody "Ultra Klutz."
To the best of my knowledge, Mr. Nicholson is unaware of this channel. The original, full video had maybe 20 views after I posted it. So, I would say he probably didn't see it. Or the original review.
@@StrangeBrainParts No, I have not seen the full film version (would love to). I did see the original Overlord Comics version of the Hab review from a few years ago, however. I searched for it recently and it was gone (I assume down due to your updating it), and pleased to see the search led me to the short film and this new one and the updated inclusion of the fourth (digital) edition. A nice surprise.
I liked the segment you showed at the end. I mean this in a good way, but you kinda got a melancholic Bill Nye/Victor Garber look going on in that clip.
You know, I'm good with both of those comparisons. I am not an actor! But I didn't know anyone willing to stand in front of the camera and look morose for a few hours. :)

So many good graphic novels off the beaten path i'd never have awareness of without this channel
totally agree. I have found so many incredible stories through this channel!
Don't know about anyone else, but I'd love to see the whole video. Had a very indie, art film kind of vibe. Liked your narration, too.

@@StrangeBrainParts happy birthday, guy! And hopefully many more!

Been thinking a lot recently, about all of the time I spend (working) making other people’s dreams come true at the cost of my own.

Love your film clip! Looks GREAT. BRAVO.
Cool that you're an artist and not just a critic. Would love to see your paintings!
Thanks for this, never paid much attention to this comic. I'll add it to my reading list.
I hope you enjoy it!
Your channel is a gold mine for hidden gems of comics. Keep doing what you doing, my good Sir.

Indeed, it was vastly different from Ultra Klutz. As was Colonia! I was a big fan of that, too.

Gives me Severance vibes. Not one-to-one obviously, but the two seem like works that say what we all know about jobs out loud
