    I’m a 30yr Forest Service veteran. In winter we sell Christmas Tree permits for folks who want to go out and chop their tree down. A family tradition! One year I was watching a dad drag his tree out of the forest in deep snow with the tree on a blue plastic hay tarp. About 15ft by 15ft I guess. He had roped tied to the grommets on the tarp and to his fanny pack on his waist. With the slick plastic he barely knew he was towing a tree. Watching the sled rescue I remembered this and started thinking it would have worked in this situation as well. You could even place a 2x4 across the tarp at the top, wrap the tarp around the 2x4 and then hook the rope on the grommet if this makes any since. The 2x4 would keep the sled from pushing the tarp below snow line if you kept the tow rope short.

    Great video !! I had always wondered about argos in the deeper snow ? They don’t have much ground clearance the belly is always dragging on the snow but this showed me they do pretty darn good I will have to do more research. I’m currently running a 700 pound atv with camso tracks I use it to access some remote antenna sites in winter. Sometimes there are pretty big drifts in the way . Great rescue

      They may have low ground clearance, but the smooth bottom helps it act like an otter sled and it just slides on the snow.
      For the work you do, if you get an Argo with a cab, you will love the Argo.

    Pendaliner, Trail FX drop in pick up truck bed liner is the best recovery rig. Cut the sides off wrap the bulk head with a pair of 2 X 4's bolt it together like a sandwich with a tow strap. The grooves in the bed liner keep it going straight.

      @CL McCartneyThey dont have schock absorber, the tires do the thing. Those are working machines and not for casual riding. That why a also have an Artic Vtt along my Argo Hdi 750. I mostly plow, hunt and work with the Argo.

    So... This is some serious terrain to be traveling over. Looks like the
    Argo did well. I live in snow country
    And am constantly amazed by
    Folks from our of our area who
    Think their sleds can go anywhere.
    Not. The modern sleds are designed
    Mostly for groomed trails. The
    Long track mountain sleds are
    Way more capable in real snow.
    Great video.

    I think you guys did a real good job of rigging the snow go up to be towed, definitely a little bit of slippage between the towing Argo's tracks and the snow tho

    Would it be fair to say, an Argo doesn't do well on a snowmachice's trail and a snowmachine doesn't do well on an argo's trail? Great video 👍 thx

    • @nvgun40
      @nvgun40  2 роки тому

      I am not sure I fully understand what you are trying to say here. The Argo's did great going cross country to get the snow machine. The Argo's in this video have run great following snow machine trails and there have been many snow machines that do great following the Argo trails.
      Thanks for the compliment on the video though.

  • @brustar5152

    As always, the performance of side by side tracked vehicles in deep snow is limited by the belly pan taking weight/traction off the tracks so then the forward movement depends upon the track architecture with it's cross piece profile.

    Did they take off the belt? Why cut the spruce tree branches off?

    • @nvgun40
      @nvgun40  2 роки тому +1

      The diamond drive (transmission) was seized. The track couldn’t spin even if the belt were taken off. That’s why we had to strap it on the sled.
      The spruce tree branch tied to the ski loops was put there to help lift the ski tips when necessary.

      @@nvgun40 diamond drives have a problem still

    • @nvgun40
      @nvgun40  2 роки тому +1

      @@darrellroeters4951 The snow machine is a 2008, that is the first time the diamond drive has ever had any problem. During the pre-season maintenance, when the diamond drive was drained and the cleaner/flush was put in, the person performing the maintenance got called away for something else and by the time they came back they forgot to drain the flush/cleaner out and replace it with the proper gear oil. In a very short time, the cleaner/flush cooked away and the diamond drive was running dry.

    Waaaay back in time we would recover a disabled sled using a Krazy Karpet under the track. Don’t know if they are still sold?

    • @sparkyzeroca
      @sparkyzeroca 2 роки тому

      There still around. in Canada anyway. They didn't like to stay under the track very good. I think the sled is A good idea if you can find one long enough for today's machines.

    I want one with a kabobs diesel engine in it but I know that's not a option yet I will have to make it myself.

    • @rowdyhoundsman
      @rowdyhoundsman 2 роки тому

      I have a Max II that I’m going to swap a 3 cylinder 722 Kubota diesel into. I just have to rebuild the Kubota first. It seems like a fairly easy swap. Build an engine stand that’ll hold the radiator and engine. Design it to mount to the Argo/Max’s frame rails. Mount it up and wire it up. I hope to get it done this winter and will post videos of the build up on my channel.

    Cool machine, but thats not very deep snow. Love see some photos of these units going through 2 ro 3x that depths. Always been curious how well they would do.

    • @nvgun40
      @nvgun40  2 роки тому +1

      The snow depth from the parking area to the snow machine ranged from 3 feet deep to 5 feet deep in many places. In the still photo at the 1:50 mark, the Argo driver is standing, yet his feet are not touching solid ground. The Argos did just fine.

      So that's why those relatively young guys driving the Argo's are seen in the video with big smiles on their faces and the machine built primarily for the young people is the one being dragged on the end of a rope?

    The snow scenes were great. The video, not so great. Two things ruined it for me. One the music, cutting out the sound of the machines. Two, the fast forward and no narrative.
    Video was probably super great for those who were out recovering this machine. They were there and experienced the sounds and the real cold and satisfaction.
    But a failing grade on a good video. Better luck next time.
