This is just excellent. We think it's essential to own your successes, starting at the easel, before anyone else sees your work, because you may be able to shut out everyone else, but the inner critic is always present in the studio. One point you made that really resonates with us is the importance of identifying the feeling of leaving the comfort zone as distinct from a feeling of failure. Art is a field that tests our confidence on a daily basis, and oddly, after a while we can come to crave the gratification of pushing past perceived limits, even if we're sometimes uncomfortable with our results. That feeling can sustain an artist, even after we take some lumps from a critic, selection panel, or gallery owner.

So true! I'm slowly starting to crave being outside of my comfort zone. The fear is still there, but the excitement is getting stronger :)

Stay Strong Christina. Thanks again for sharing your feelings. Your words point out the truth; the whole world would think the sky was falling if we all realized how the people we view as geniuses or to be unstoppable and incredibly confident were really feeling. What they actually had to fight through mentally to create what they created and how they even may have felt after. It is a good thing to have artists speak about this. I hope this reaches everyone. it might actually help us all if the sky falls a little.

Thanks DeVerne! Glad you liked it :) Hopefully we can make more progress in normalizing these feelings (and destroying the myth of the invincible genius!)

Great video. I used to perform in London with a small collective of poets, singers etc. I would be in bits inside, and the walk up to the stage was difficult, but I'd force myself there, do my thing, and it would be OK. I'd get asked back, but despite this, every time was the same 😊 We have to manage ourselves inside in ways many don't even know. Some of the great poets, actors, singers, and artists were like me, in bits inside. Seeing other performers make mistakes is also great because it's proof, even the best, make mistakes. We are too harsh on ourselves in ways we don't judge others. All the best, John

Thanks for sharing, John! Glad you were able to overcome it (at least in the moment) so you could perform. It's true, many great artists and performers share this anxiety. At least we are not alone! We are all allowed to make mistakes :)

oh boy does this hit home...
i agreed to be in a silent auction for a customer painting for the highest bidder. i once did the same thing and no one bid on it...this year (8 yrs later) someone bid hundreds of dollars. now i'm just nervous about it and worried about the pressure given the money, rather than relishing someone would pay that much for my work

I feel you, when someone pays a lot for our work we can feel a lot of pressure. But often we are our hardest critics. If they paid that amount, it is because they value your work ❤️

Excellent video, Christina. I think imposter syndrome also comes from a mismatch between one's self-image and the reality that sometimes clashes with it. And one more useful thing to try is to ask one's inner critic (the one who says 'no, this can't be right: you having this success") what it's worried about. What it fears might happen if you just accepted your success?

Thank you so much for this. The comfort zone remark felt very valuable, and I will definitely put it in my toolbox. I will occasionally rewatch this video: ua-cam.com/video/whyUPLJZljE/v-deo.htmlsi=E_yzQ_GMn8ocL0rz when I’m feeling really squeezed by “the Imposter”. I find it helpful to put things into perspective. I wish you continued success and the ability to enjoy it!❤
