This was excellent. Thank you so much for the time and effort it must have taken to produce. My grandmother's people are from far off to the northwest but learning about this part of Scotland was a wonderful use of time. Bless you.

There were FOUR member families in Tynedale with the DODDS being the one that made blackmail their speciality... These four families were known as the Four Graynes (equivalent to highland clans). The bit about Kinmont - that was a PELE tower not a bastle. Great video though - well done!
@@AlexIlesUK It was a bad joke. I'm glad that (or I hope that) you didn't take it too seriously. My ancestry DNA report claims that my DNA is from England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, and Norway. I am still trying my best to colonize this part of the country, so I don't necessarily take a negative view toward colonization.
Thompson from Dumfriesshire and Cumbria before they sent us off to County Down in the 17th century. I always heard we came from horse thieves way back lol. Pretty sure these are my people. Pretty sure a lot of these people ended up in Southern Appalachia for sure
@AlexIlesUK I, too, sometimes feel a deep rooted desire to rangle up some cattle or sheep lol. Jokes aside, it's absolutely wild what stories and folklore will stick with a people 300 years after they were forcibly removed from their homeland. We've been in Virginia since the 1700s. Long after we forgot when we came here exactly, we remembered being horse thieves. It kind of makes me sad for what we have lost.
@AlexIlesUK I did enjoy Your Video Mate! Hope You don't think I'm picking fault with it! If You wan't some really good reading about the Reivers try the Steel Bonnets by George Mcdonald Fraser! He lists a lot of words in use today that started from Reivers!
Hi Ian, Not at all, I appreciate it and try to improve (theres always one area in a episode where I make a mistake - I hope a Bastle for a Peel tower isn't that bad) and I am learning at the same time because while I read a LOT, there is always more to read. I did read some of Fraser a few years ago but I did find it heavy going! Thats likley why I did not remember it!
@AlexIlesUK Being a Borderer I found it easy due to knowing and perhaps having been to or passed by a lot of the places! Try it again as Your making these videos it may seem less heavy a read! Have You visited the Borders at all?

All these channels are same when it comes to calling Kings of Scotland there has never been a King of Scotland it's King of Scots ie King of the Scots people, the King of England is King of the land hence the reason you cannot own land in England. . .
I made the change. It's important to recognise that the Scots came from Northern Ireland and settled on the west coast of the north of Britain before expanding and conquering the Picts and Britons who were living there. As the bloodlines mixed the current king is the King of England and the King of Scots.
@@AlexIlesUK The Scots did indeed come from Ireland/Eire and settled in Dal Raita/ Argyll and this small area became the 33rd county of Ireland/Eire. . .

Not only Scotland; those south of the Border were not always entirely law abiding...including my own ancestors.

Thank you!
Thank you, Alex. Great second episode on the Border Reivers!
Glad you enjoyed it! Feels so long ago since I did it!
Very good video, I enjoyed it.
Thank you!
I'm now eagerly awaiting the UA-cam short of Alex going I DID IT as he sprints out of a field leading a confused sheep

@bethmarriott9292 did EWE?
@@AlexIlesUK ewe got me 😭
Great history, thank you for posting
You are welcome!
The Picture of Reiver at 8.18 is of I think Gregor Scott of whom I worked with for about 6-8 years!
Interesting I'll look him up!

There was a lack of images to use and sadly I didn't have time to go and take more myself so I used what I had to hand but I've taken it onboard!
There all still here in abundance, all those names are still so common round here I probably know several of each.
Many did stay that's for certain

Clan dalziel. They fought at Otterburn. But I don't think they were all to prolific. From lanark.

Nice!
I know a place that is still like this today. It's the border of Texas and Louisiana.
I do want to visit the USA but I think I may not have that as the first place on my list.
@@AlexIlesUK Leave it off your list entirely. Everything here is already spoken for anyway. There is nothing here to colonize.
Who said I was going to colonise it...
Texas is actualy high on my list to visit, it looks like an amazing place! I want to avoid California, it looks hellish.

Blackmeal was a term for Cattle hence Black Cows !
