The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Wow. Never knew Makeba appeared on Sullivan. Incredible.
Yesss! Ed Sullivan opened the doors to a lot of African American artists. He had soul!!!
You can't be in a bad mood listening to this wonderful song.
I love to see REAL talent like this. Her voice is incredible. She is gorgeous. And she is dressed beautifully.
I had this 45 and played it constantly. This clip has me smiling inside and outside.
Fabulous hit which had originally been released in the U.S. in the fall of 1967. Miriam Makeba also was signed to Frank Sinatra's own Reprise Records when this hit originally broke out that year. Also, Miriam Makeba was married to the great trumpeter Hugh Masekela, who came out with his first U.S. million-selling smash hit in the spring of 1968, "Grazin' In The Grass."
married to stokely carmichael
@@rrmauriello Yes after Masekela
With so much going on in the country at the moment, we could do with songs like these. LEGEND!!! who is coming with me to 2022?
I'm right there with you .
When I was a little girl my mother would play this song I would sing along with Ms. Makeba singing I got to go I got to go. lol💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Song was co-written with Jerry Ragovoy, same guy who wrote "Time Is On My Side" and "A Wonderful Dream" (recorded by The Majors} and co-wrote "Piece Of My Heart".
and also used the name Norman Meade for witing credits.
@@whatever0090 Absolutely wrong? One might think record labels would be a dependable source.
@@Playbyplaymedia Never saw co-written... I get you
What a fun dance inspiration!!

Really GREAT to see. She was banned from South Africa, moved to New York, and, I believe, she was married to American activist Stokely Carmichael at this time.
Correct. Husband #2 (Miriam was married to Hugh Masekela when she moved to NYC in 1960)
Yes she was married to Stokely Carmichael at the time of this recording. I worked with his sisters at Trans World Airlines in NYC and met Miriam about a year later. An incredible memory and honor !
Stokely was actually born in Trinidad (he was banned from there)and did activism in the US
Love the Ed Sullivan videos! Esp ones don't remember. This 1 is terrific. Thx!
Pure magic like lightning in a small bottle
This, right here, makes this whole confusing nonsensical planet worth living on. Thank you Miriam, you cool as hell person.

May she rest in peace !
The first time i watch this video and Mirian, from my times when i was a teenager, great time, in the 70s i listen this song.
I was around 8 or 9 when this song was a hit. I think children enjoyed this song more than the adults.
why would someone give this a thumbs down?
She was a pinko commie.
Because they don't know true talent. She was wonderful.
Very beautiful Lady Grace and style. Puts me in the mind of Diana Ross without makeup.
Grande
Ed featured a diverse set of performers when that wasn’t so common
Hermoso recuerdo.

Love this song! So does Mark Rober lol.
Before Myla, there was Miriam Makeba.
