Miriam Makeba performs live to an enthralled audience at AVO Sessions, Basel, Switzerland (2006).
Zenzile Miriam Makeba (4 March 1932 - 9 November 2008), nicknamed Mama Africa, was a Grammy Award-winning South African singer and civil rights activist. In the 1960s, she was the first artist from Africa to popularize African music around the world. She is best known for the song "Pata Pata", first recorded in 1957 and released in the U.S. in 1967. She recorded and toured with many popular artists, such as Harry Belafonte, Paul Simon, and her former husband Hugh Masekela.
Makeba campaigned against the South African system of apartheid. The South African government responded by revoking her passport in 1960 and her citizenship and right of return in 1963. As the apartheid system crumbled she returned home for the first time in 1990.
Makeba died of a heart attack on 9 November 2008 after performing in a concert in Italy organised to support writer Roberto Saviano in his stand against the Camorra, a mafia-like organisation local to the region of Campania.

Yes! Now everyone primos and preensthey want the title but not the work that goes into becoming your best. To be fair she was blessed with a voice like no other but she also worked hard and pushed herself!
She lost her only daughter Sibongile yet God gave her a whole lot of grandchildren
Mama Africa ! God bless you in heaven. Best wishes from Germany.
Das macht einfach Spaß, zu sehen mit wieviel Freude Miriam singt. Der kleine Trommler ist jawohl der Kracher!!!
Miriam's great grandson!
@@donnamoreno9750 Leider kann ich nicht so gut Englisch, darum schreibe ich lieber in Deutsch.
Ich glaube das ist sogar ihr Uhrenkel.
Aber egal, der ist der Kracher.
First Africa to win Grammy award
I grew up listening to Ms Mekeba and fell in love with her voice and language. May she rest in peace.

I was a little boy when I first heard of her (Pata Pata) and I have loved her every since. One beautiful lady. Her music will carry on and continue to be a legacy. RIP Miriam Makeba (Mama Africa).
I heard this on the radio in Hawaii 2021 and I played it for everyone I know! My second grade teacher introduced our classroom to the song and the dance she did on Ed Sullivan's show😍😁👏👏💃
That's mall boy on the drums is super talented.....may ur star shine ever brighter son of the soil.....
Love this song. Don't understand the words......but it sounds UP and positive. And I dance whenever I hear it. 😊
Pata Pata in the Xhosa language means "touch touch.' There is a dance that accompanies the song. She and the backing vocalists are doing a very subdued version of it. It's somewhat suggestive and flirtatious, as the man and woman take turns touching each other as they swivel down to a squatting position. Here are the lyrics:
Saguquka sathi ‘bheka’
Nants’ iPata Pata
Saguquka sathi ‘bheka’
Nants’ iPata Pata
Yiyo mama, yiyo mama
Nants’ iPata Pata
Yiyo mama, yiyo mama
Nants’ iPata Pata
Translation:
So we grooved and said "Check it out"
This is the Pata Pata
So we grooved and said "Check it out"
This is the Pata Pata
That's it lady
This is the Pata Pata
That's it lady
This is the Pata Pata

This show gets even more delightful after seeing many whites in the audience recognizing this singer's talent. In fact, most of them are whites!
Well the show was in Switzerland. That’s why the majority were white folks. But definitely the audience knew already ahead that they were going to see one of the most talented singers ever…
RIP Mama Africa....
Aye! Love her! As a child in the 70s in Jamaica 🇯🇲 we admired her.
