I was intrigued to learn about the Delonghi after living with our Philips 5500 for almost three weeks now. We bought the Philips because it is a super automatic - in other words, once set, you don't have to babysit it. Watching you continually fiddle with the Delonghi reinforced our Philips decision for an automatic machine; if we want to tweak or fiddle, we use our Breville BES870XL. BTW, the Philips allows you to measure in ml or oz by making the appropriate settings selection.
This is another fair and unbiased review from you Tom. I love how your not sponsor flirting and the channel is all about you and your honest impressions. Please keep up the good work.
I love the new section title animations! I'm not in the market for a super auto (just bought an Ascaso Steel duo), but I love watching your videos anyway.
Thanks Tom, another great review. I would have mentioned a couple more advantages on the Delonghi. 1. The brew group never needs lubricating (delonghi advertises this on their machines), whereas the Philips one does. 2. You can control the milk froth level on the Delonghi with the dial on the milk carafe, something you cannot do on the Philips. I too think the the Dleonghi is the clear winner.
@@kamyar9085 I believe so, yes. I think Delonghi advertises all their brew groups as never needing to be lubricated. But as far as the ability to control milk froth level, this varies from one Delonghi model to the next, you'll need to look at the milk carafe and see if it has a dial on it. Some do, other don't.
I got Philips 5500 on BF sale also from Romania, big point for me is I drink only cappuccino and the milk container has no tubes, simple to clean, no sour taste. Wish it had stainless burrs, overall very good machine. And it makes cold drinks
Great comparison. I also prefer De'Longhi over Philips after thoroughly comparing the Philips Saeco SM8785/00 with the De'Longhi Primadonna Soul ECAM 610.74.MB. While both machines deliver solid performance, De'Longhi stands out in several areas: coffee quality, consistency, and overall build durability. The advanced brewing technologies used by De'Longhi, such as their Bean Adapt system, allow for a more refined and customizable coffee experience. That said, for most casual users, the differences might not be as noticeable - it's something that coffee enthusiasts truly appreciate.
I currently own a Philips 3200 latte go and have had it for about 3 years, and a few issues will be noticeable with long term ownership. 1. We were quite sold on how easy it is to clean the Latte Go container, but the drawback is it's mostly foam but if you have a non-fussy family it may not bother them as much. 2. The brew group needing a bi-monthly greasing gets tiring, but more annoying is the way it's constructed, you'll need a toothbrush and it's a pain to get coffee grounds out of all the corners. The Delonghi seems much easier to clean + no greasing. 3. Top hopper is so shallow and the grinder adjustment knob is in the way so every 2 days I have to manually scoop the beans into the intake in the corner. Aesthetically I'm a fan of the Philips and it has been rock solid, making 1-4 drinks a day without skipping a beat with regular maintenance. That said, I'm ready to swap it out for a Delonghi as the brew group is capable of making larger pucks along with a finer grind for better drinks, and appears more convenient to own daily.
Delonghi hands down: it's centred on the quality of the drink, but that seems to come second to looks and ergonomics on the Philips. But to be honest I'd go for a much cheaper Delonghi and froth the milk myself. It'll have the same brew unit and produce a similar quality of drink to the pricier one, and frothing jugs are simpler, less wasteful and easier to clean than auto-carafes.
I prefer the Delonghi to but the Phillips did serve as a good gateway into automatic espresso for the coffee aficionados I know. That being said I always steer friends looking to star out towards the Delonghi which is my favorite brand for automatics.
I saw a deal for £399 in the Uk for the Dinamica plus, it’s the 370.70 model not 370.95, I believe main difference is lack of app and measuring water level precisely. Is that the best super automatic I could buy for that price range?
Bought the dinamica plus 4 weeks ago. Marks electrical about £425. Dosent have the app but using the my function can customise and then save drink settings. So far ive been delighted with it, ive tried coffee works beans and also lavatza super crema. Have to say i actually prefer the lavatza beans at grind setting 3 and max dose. I take sugar so im not sure my palate is refined enough to separate speciality beans from the more mass produced, but the lavatza hit my sweet spot for about one third of the price🙂

I bought the Philips 5400 2 years ago, at Black Friday in Romania. Because my wife loved an 3000 series that i had in the past. This 5400 is way better than that, but trust me, after i saw the first reviews of this Dinamica Plus at you, i regreted the purchase😂 Because i had an Dedica, i was the man of purely manual experience...and i loved intense cappucinos...and this is not that intense. 😢 but i use the "extra shot" function to get an stronger shot...or, i make a strong coffee to my cheap moka pot, in traditional italian style😂 Greetings from Romania and happy espresso drinking Tom!
Thank you for this comparison - completely validates my real world experience of a few Phillips and delonghi machines. Phillips are weaker in terms of the coffee they make. I’d say more like a nespresso machine whereas the delonghis are just a bit stronger. I’ve also as I noted in another video experienced the variation in grind time on delonghis which is I think quite annoying. I think the encoder varies grind time based on tamp pressure of the last shot - but it means a definitive dial in is impossible. I’ve had two delonghis and one at work, different models, but all the same. Variable grind times. On the magnifica s at work it can grind for anywhere between 5.5s and 9s on max dose. Which is a pretty big variation. If you get a 9s grind you get something really rather good. However for people who drink cappuccino or americano I don’t think you’d tell the difference and they still are better than the Phillips shots I think.
with these types of machines I am always interested in how strong their steaming is, our Jura can steam half and half but fails miserably on heavy cream which is our preferred cream for making breve
Thank you Tom, no one does a comparison video like you! CanI ask you a question though? Between the Dinamica Plus and the Ninja Luxe Cafe, which one do you like better?
Hey Tom, I am a beginner in the espresso world and about to purchase my first machine. How does a machine like this compare to something like the Ninja Lux or the Meraki Espresso Machine? Is there a significant taste difference between a automatic machine vs a „semi-automatic“ espresso machine like the Ninja? Thanks
Well, a semi-automatic gives a lot more control, and in my experience makes the better drink. The Dinamica does pretty well though, if you use the Doppio+ and stop at 2:1 ratio. But in the end, the semi-automatic will win.
Great video, I had the 5400 and now have the EVO and do agree that the Delonghi will produce a much better shot that is more full-bodied. I also agree with your assessment in terms of the intuitiveness of the Philips. Concerning the pucks, I have tested my EVO's 2X Doppio option, and I also get different weights from 12-15 grams or 8-10 seconds of grind time. It seems to depend on the bean type. Would have been nice to test both at their regular strength espresso settings, I'm positive that the Delonghi would have beaten the Philips as well. The colour and crema difference between the two is very evident.
Yea, I was kind of irritated that he didn't use the automatic settings for the Delonghi. It's an unfair comparison at that point. You should do this over.
Thanks for the great comparison. What are your thoughts on the Gaggia Academia and new Kitchenaid KF8? Torn between both. Do you plan on reviewing them in the future?

Thanks for your reviews. Due to a video of yours on the Delonghi Magnifica Evo, i just bought it today. My first super automatic. I haven't even turned it on as I'm waiting for freshly roasted beans 🫘
No need to turn the machine off you can just press stop after grinding and it will eject the grinded coffee. And i think the differ in grinding time on de De'Longhi has to to something with resistance because when you grind coarser,it grinds longer and shorter with finer grinds.
Hi Tom, great review. In another video you said that Delonghi in the doppio+ recipe can grind up to 15g and brew a real espresso. I understand that this is not always possible and sometimes it is only 12g? How is it with the Rivelia coffee maker, there is no doppio+ recipe there, and in the last video you said that this coffee maker can also grind about 14g of coffee? Maybe you can also make a comparison to devices such as Jura and Dr. Coffee C11 where they can brew up to 16g of coffee and Miele and Nivona where you can brew 14g.
I just tested the Rivelia with the 2xEspresso recipe, and I get about 14 grams with it. With the Doppio+ it seems that sometimes it grinds for 8 seconds, 9 seconds or 10 seconds, so that's kinda weird, and it affects the amount in the puck of course. I'll have to cave and buy a Jura one of these days...
Of course. The coffee you get from one of these is not even close to the Nespresso. You get a much better quality coffee if you use good beans from a super auto

I bought a dinamica plus recently in amazon spain when have discount. I paid 550 euros the version with 24 preparations. Its the best machine that you can get if you compare with the philips
This is brilliant, next time I'm round someone's house with a coffee machine I can inspect their coffee pucks like a naturalist checking over some elephant poop.
I just purchased the Phillips 3300 today and I'm super disappointed as to how weak/watered down the coffee tastes. Ive changed the coffee beans, probably spent half a bag of just testing and re testing and not happy at all. Haven't even been able to get a good Crema on it. Might need to exchange it for a Delonghi...?
That's very strange comparison video. First, you didn't take Philipp 5500, which is top of the line and does things like iced coffee with lower temperature brewing, which Delonghi can't even do. The price range is also subjective, the Dinamica Plus is almost twice more expensive than comparing Philips model. I would think you should compare it to something like Melita Latticia or Jura E6 in the same price range. Then you didn't even play with a grinder settings on Philips, which is different for different coffee beans, didn't try a double shot option (18g)... Not sure how this whole video can be named like that unless someone had biased opinion from the beginning. Or paid promotion.
Well, the 5500 model just adds cold drink functionality. It still only does max 8-9 gram pucks. Sure, you can pull two shots, one after another. But since the puck is too small to begin with, I find the extraction in general lacking. That's my honest opinion. And no, no one sponsored this video. I made this in response to the dozens of times people ask me, "what's better, Delonghi or Philips". For me, it's obvious. Jura vs Delonghi is probably less obvious.
@@TomsCoffeeCorner then your video should be called "DeLonghi makes better espresso shots" and stop confusing potential buyers. Also, super automatic machines are something more than just espresso and on the long comparison chart that includes things like "price-features ratio", I think Philips not worse but probably better than DeLonghi.
considering both brands atm for purchase, not the exact model but something around 250-ish euro although Delonghi beats philips but i find philips interface and ease of use much more valuable than Delonghi ! u can set the amount of water and everything, i don't like the bit where u had to stop Delonghi to get the same amount of shot to compare i do like strong coffee since i'm used to pure Egyptian coffee making with lots of ground in but the purpose of the machine is to make life easier 😅
I know it doesn't really matter, but apart from the screen the Philips looks like cheap trash. there's massive gaps between the panels like a cybertruck, the metal looking stuff is dull, and the over use of the black plastic makes it seem tacky, low build quality and cheap.
I have a Philips 5500 and I know it doesn’t hold as much grams per shot as other machines but I use the *extra shot* button and problem solved? My pucks come out perfect I not sure what’s wrong with yours in the video, how many drinks are on your machine? Is broke in properly? Philips gets a lot of hate, I think for the price it’s a good machine, it’s not a $3000 Jura or Miele and some people say it’s crap. That’s like saying your Honda civic can’t drive as nice as my S class Benz well no shi* but doesn’t mean the civic is crap it’s good for the price point
BTW this bit about delivering a latte macchiato and calling it a cappu seems to be gaining ground elsewhere. I just had a "cappu" out of a machine in a supermarket* and it did the same thing. Very soon the great unwashed won't know the difference. They won't care, but it'll irritate the hell out of the rest of us. * yes, I know. I was out on my bike, though, so I'm pleading extenuating circumstances.
On day to day usage, De'Longhi operating system is better, it's just one press on screen and machine lines drinks on screen by popularity, so one you mostly use is on top first. De'Longhi could have a bigger water container and it really doesn't warn you about water running out, as it assumes you always make espresso on it. Also the water level is difficult to see compared to Philips. Philips uses less milk for drinks. Philips is noisier. (I have one cheaper Philips in my garage, my sister got one those Philips in video and De'Longh dynamicai in my kitchen)
I hate philips coffee machines, I used to have one broke down then replacement was also bad and then they offered me a Saeco which also broke down. The coffee was like yours. Mush pucks. I bought a Delonghi for 4 yrs now and it is finally perfect.
Ordered Delonghi 372.95 yesterday. Ive seen many videos now where people show how it makes coffee nad few months later how it is. Philips just looks and feels cheap. At this price point unacceptable.
Tom is lying about the pucks from Philips. I have the machine and I get nice solid puck from it. Philips does not recommend to adjust the grinder right away. Read the manual!
I got Dinamica plus 37085 from Amazon, it didn’t work, replaced with a new one didn’t work disappointed, just returned and can’t trust De’Longhi anymore
The point of the video is to prove that Delonghi beats Philips. I get people asking me all the time which is better. This video is the answer to that question.

u can set the amount of water and everything, i don't like the bit where u had to stop Delonghi to get the same amount of shot to compare
i do like strong coffee since i'm used to pure Egyptian coffee making with lots of ground in but the purpose of the machine is to make life easier 😅
In Hungary 370 is more expensive than 380, and 380 is the newer model, right? Strange for sure.
I’d have to research which came first. I think they’re really similar. Drinks should be the same…
I know it doesn't really matter, but apart from the screen the Philips looks like cheap trash. there's massive gaps between the panels like a cybertruck, the metal looking stuff is dull, and the over use of the black plastic makes it seem tacky, low build quality and cheap.
Will the delonghi make lattes on par with Starbucks? Thanks.
Replacing our 15yr old seaco Vienna super automatic that finally failed, with a De’Longhi hope the new one lasts as long!

@@tuntematon82 Thanks for posting your experiences!
Aaah, you said exactly the same thing - my earlier comment was too early!
I hate philips coffee machines, I used to have one broke down then replacement was also bad and then they offered me a Saeco which also broke down. The coffee was like yours. Mush pucks. I bought a Delonghi for 4 yrs now and it is finally perfect.
Can you make iced drinks with the Delonghi ?
I suppose brushing the touch panels by accident is a bit more likely when you're standing behind it and reaching over the top of it lol.
Yeah I know. But it’s happened to me a couple times otherwise, too.
Ordered Delonghi 372.95 yesterday. Ive seen many videos now where people show how it makes coffee nad few months later how it is. Philips just looks and feels cheap. At this price point unacceptable.
It's worth going for the more expensive DeLonghi, Philips aren't experts in coffee machines, just OK at best.
Philips latte go system is unbeatable. No pipe to clean...
It is easy to clean, that's true.
Is the Delonghi worth 33% more than the Philips 5400?
@@WhatTheFlipOfficial For me, yes. No brainer.
Tom is lying about the pucks from Philips. I have the machine and I get nice solid puck from it. Philips does not recommend to adjust the grinder right away. Read the manual!
@@0cool966 I’m glad if you’re getting good pucks… I just haven’t managed it yet, even on the finer setting. I guess your mileage may vary.
Thanks Tom!
You can get the Phillips on sale for $600, the delonghi costs twice that much… not a fair comparison
I got Dinamica plus 37085 from Amazon, it didn’t work, replaced with a new one didn’t work disappointed, just returned and can’t trust De’Longhi anymore
this review is bogus, so you're testing to super automatics but one of them you run in manual mode - see the problem.
Completely agree
I used to have philips. They never lasted. I have never had a delonghi
Delonghi pay you😂😂😂

The point of the video is to prove that Delonghi beats Philips. I get people asking me all the time which is better. This video is the answer to that question.

Мелитта и Нивона лучше всех. Филипс вообще плохо))

@@GERRThanks for your comment. I haven’t tried Nivona yet, but I’ll have to do that soon enough. Cheers!
Got Philips it was cheaper, dinámica it's way to expensive 🫰
