Hammock Camping in a Thunderstorm with my Dog

  • Indi and I are back camping together and this time I am in my hammock, camping in a secluded, protected spot, out of the wind that roared all evening on the other side of the trees. I was so pleased with the cosy set up and relieved to be well protected when a lightning and thunderstorm hit in the morning. It poured down with heavy rain as I lay in my hammock and dosed in the morning light. There is nothing more relaxing than lying in a cosy bed listening to the sound of the thunder and rain, knowing you are snug and dry. This was the most relaxing and magical start to the day.
    I hope that you will all enjoy joining us on this trip and sharing the adventure with us.

    That thunderstorm would have been awesome - there is something soothing in a good rolling thunder. And Indi looked as snug as a bug in her jacket and sleeping bag. 😊

      I agree about the thunder. With the first flash of lightening I sat bolt upright (pardon the pun) and quickly thought through whether there were any risks, but then decided I was safe and settled in to enjoy it.

    I watched this video off/on over the course of a couple of weeks, I hope the view counts on the YT algorithm! I love how Indy greeted you in the morning, trying to get into the hammock with you 😂 and as always the sound of the rain. Question, I think your season is Summer right now, so when it rains, is it more like a warm storm with humidity? Just curious. I also love your camera work, especially the shot showing you in the hammock in the morning with Indy next to you. Great video, thank you for sharing another camp with us! 👏🏼

      Returning viewers are always good news. Thanks for persevering, even if you only had small chunks of time. I do the same, watch videos as I make dinner, then watch the rest the next evening. Often our rain comes across ahead of a cold front, so typically we don't get warm humid rain where I am, more often than not it's cold with the rain. Thanks for the comments about my camera work. All self taught and I stuff up lots along the way, so a compliment goes a long way there. Thanks.

    To Cathy. I have been watching your channel since the beginning. Thank you for the thoughtful and relaxing kaupapa you put into these videos. I love being able to sit down with a cup of tea and both reflect on my past adventures and plan new ones, inspired by your adventure OT.
    A thought - your gaiters which are no longer waterproof.... are they made from GORE-TEX and/or canvas? Mine are ancient, made from canvas and lined (I think) with GORE-TEX from Katmandu (about 20 years old). They too are not as waterproof as they used to be but I treat them with the same product I use to waterproof my canvas style (non-leather) tramping boots and shoes. This works surprisingly well, I literally can see the water beading off the canvas after crossing a stream. Of course if the gaiters are oversaturated with water over time, the product will wear off. Thus you will need to reapply. Food for thought maybe...... :).
    Kindest regards, from a fellow solo, female tramper.
    Verity (Bumble Bee)

    • @verity_elder
      @verity_elder 5 місяців тому

      Alternatively you could explore using a product designed for waterproofing other GORE-TEX style products like rain coats.

    • @adventureot
      @adventureot  5 місяців тому +1

      Hi Verity. I loved your comment. Thank you so much for taking the time to say hi. Good idea with the gaiters. I have a potentially very wet camp planned for this week so will treat them with the waterproofing that I have and see how I get on. I always like to keep things going if I can. I hate to throw things out. Usually if they are quality items you can give them another life and keep them going. Fingers crossed.

    That is the flattest hammock hang I've ever seen. Now I have over 600 nights in a hammock so please hear me out. A gathered end hammock pulled flat will pinch you inside making it impossible to lay diagonal. You want a 30 degree sag in it so a structural Ridgeline connected to your carabiners will achieve that. It should be 83% of your hammock length roughly. In order to lay flat your feet is 11 o'clock and head is 5 o'clock. Another advantage to a structural Ridgeline is it pulls your hammock ends in so your tarp coverage is better. Bridge hammocks can lie flat since there's no calf ridge down the middle. Hope this helps, Try it!

    • @adventureot
      @adventureot  5 місяців тому +3

      Ah ha, oki doki, I am following you and that makes a lot of sense. So you don't lie lengthways, but on a 5 o'clock 11 o'clock angle. Ok so that would flatten out the hammock. What you say about the ridgeline makes sense when I think about a few set ups that I have seen. I just never took the time to understand why they had them, now I know. Thanks for sharing your learnings with me. 600 night, wowsers, good stuff, keep camping!

    • @randybeeson3424
      @randybeeson3424 5 місяців тому +2

      @@adventureot It's weird but the flatter your hammock, the tighter the sides pinch in, holding you in the center. Once you clip in your structural Ridgeline, it can stay connected all the time giving you the right pitch no matter how far the trees are apart. I strive for 5 to 8 normal steps between trees. Oh and you can use an extra hammock strap for this ridgeline making it as close as possible to 83 %of your hammock length. Give her a try.

    • @adventureot
      @adventureot  5 місяців тому +1

      Ha ha, yes I think that is always the fear, falling out. The only other time I have camped in a hammock I did just that. It was a flat canvas type though. Definitely not designed for sleeping in (although, hmmm, all hammocks should put you to sleep really), lying out in the sun, dozing away.

      Well that weather is sounding promising for you. Takes a bit for the ground to finally dry out though hey. Here it is the first day of no daylight savings, so our clocks have gone back an hour and we lose an hour of evening light. That means I have to have camp fully set up and ready for night fall at just 6:09pm, and that will quickly shift earlier and earlier. Yikes, it will be a challenge.

      About the first 10cm at the head end got wet. I did a bit of shifting around of the set up (not on camera as it was boring, lol) to try and get the two lined up as best I could but could have done with a purpose made hammock tarp that is longer through the ridgeline part.

She keeps a really keen eye on it so would walk out with it again the next day, but like a teenager on a device, I usually take it off her in the evening and suggest she find something else to do. She can get a bit obsessed. Then I know it is safely in her dog harness for the walk out. Have a lovely day.

      Thanks Rebecca. Those Swedish pancakes do sound similar. Such basic ingredients but for some reason they always feel so special to me. I think it is the association that I too have with my mother making them for us.

    That's clever to use clips for a makeshift underquilt. Nice trip. If you need hammock tips, Shug's videos are great.

    G'day Cathy, "Evening Viewers" Did you get Hoges Show in NZ in the 70's/80's ? - if so you would know Strop & Delvine as well as Leo Wanker & Donger and how he opened the show.
    Another great camp in beautiful NZ.
