"Black Jeopardy" is a recurring sketch on the American late-night live television sketch comedy and variety show, Saturday Night Live (SNL). In this sketch, contestants play a version of the popular game show Jeopardy!, but with a twist: the questions and categories often revolve around African-American culture, norms, and experiences.
When Tom Hanks hosted SNL, he participated in a memorable rendition of "Black Jeopardy." Hanks, known for his versatility and comedic timing, took on the role of a contestant trying to navigate the cultural references and humor inherent in the sketch.
The sketch typically features Kenan Thompson as the host, Darnell Hayes, who guides the contestants through the game. Despite initial skepticism or misunderstandings from the non-black contestants, they often find common ground and humor as the game progresses. The sketch cleverly explores issues of race, identity, and societal norms in a lighthearted and comedic manner.
Overall, Tom Hanks' participation in "Black Jeopardy" likely added to the sketch's humor and charm, as he engaged with the unique dynamics of the game and interacted with the other characters in the sketch.
Michael Che was the main writer on this sketch, and said that it came from observing how many similarities there were between the inner city neighborhood where he grew up, where there was a lot of religion, a distrust of the government, a lot of pickup trucks, and everyone had guns, and rural white neighborhoods that featured the same things.
and the women are fat
It's very true. I'm a black man from Kentucky. I've lived in the projects & in a rural trailer park. I've always told people that THE only difference besides skin color was simply the music.
Because when slaves were freed, the only people black people were allowed to live next to were poor whites. So they adopted a lot of the culture of those poor white people. Which is why they are so similar.
Same same.
@@TheeTwanSolothe only part of that surprises me is the pickup trucks.
I love what you'all talked about, if you are from the same social class, you got a lot in common. A friend of mine put it like this: They put $10 on the table, and get us fighting. Because of my race I think I should have 6 and you 4. Because of your gender You think you should get 7 and me 3. And they egg us on because if we stopped fighting we'd notice.. wasn't there supposed to be $100 on this table? where'd that other 90 go? And the answer is always the ones stirring us up to fight over the $10.
Exactly.
its why a lot of politicians don't even bother talking about governing or policy or anything useful. they just lean into culture war crap because it gets people riled up and emotional and they go vote based on that and meanwhile everything just slowly gets worse
No war but class war ✊
Olli laughing like he's been through a roll or two of Car Tape in hard times. 😀
LMAO! That's my window right now! Not to mention its control panel has been hanging on by the wire harness for...I honestly don't even know. 😂🤣
Try, snl's meet your future wife.
Olli hit it straight on -- the REAL divides in our country are based upon economic lines, which is why the people at the top have to stir every other pot to divide people; race, religion, sexuality, etc... anything to prevent the bottom half of this country from rising up against the top.
For two good bits on this, check out George Carlin, 'similarities and differences'(especially the first 2 minutes) and 'American dream'.
I mean, there are some things that are unique to each race and whatnot as far as the oppression they've had to endure, but poverty looks like poverty no matter where in the world you are.
That's partially true, but doesn't tell the full story. As the sketch shows at the very end, it goes a little deeper than that.
Bingo. MLK Jr started talking about the economic divides, shows up to a union strike and that's when he's assassinated
Bacon’s rebellion
"That's how they get you." Should be relatable to everyone in the world.
Dangerous to assume it’s always true, cause then people can manipulate and take advantage of you just as much. But that doesn’t mean it’s its not often true.
Only in america.
@@gustlightfall and the even dumber response rolls in.
@@Souledex Oh no, the government is after me! No one is interested in you and your kinky secrets. Ah typical american obsession and paranoia.
And that's how they don't get me... in part because my fingertip is just not reliable.
If Tom Hanks is on SNL, you know it's going to be a great one.
Always
And David S. Pumpkins is his own thanggg
If Tom Hanks is on a flight, you know it’s going to crash.
Fun fact, the part where Tom Hanks pulls back when Keenan went to shake his hand that was an ad lib , Keenan didn't expect it
Yeah, you can tell one of the other contestants is trying hard not to laugh 😂
hanks is an icon
Have to remember that Tom Hanks started off doing comedic movies before drama. This takes him back to his roots
Boosom Buddies ❤❤😂😂
That’s true! He was HILARIOUS!!🤣🤣🤣🤣
Remember? That's common knowledge.
And Tom Hanks has hosted SNL a million times and always puts on great performances when he does.
@@bossfan49 You would be shocked at how many young folks have no idea.
This is probably one of the better skits from the last decade or so...for a wide variety of reasons.
Tom Hanks is such a good guy, that if you woke up tomorrow and read “Tom Hanks Slaps Nun” as a headline your first thought would be, “… Man, what did that nun DO that Tom Hanks needed to slap her?”
Martin Crane, Archie Bunker, George Jefferson and Fred Sanford all sat in "the good chair."
As does my dad and my grandpa before him. 😁
I'm a white guy and sanford and son was the funniest show I've ever seen, we lost something in America when we stopped laughing at each other, that's how you really understand each other
@@tru3sk1llAgreed but I will say the Weekend Update banter between Michael Che and Colin Jost is amazing, doesn't shy away from irreverence
My dad was so surprised the last time he plopped down in his chair and it exploded into pieces. We were just surprised every time it didn’t.
The part where Tom raises his hands like he’s afraid was completely improvised and not in the original script.
Props to writer Che and Kenan Thompson (Darnell) who nailed it.
I like Keenan. He always delivers.
all in... im a old white bread middle 'merican. ... i think we just need to break bread together, ten minutes together... needed this and love it.
No matter how much money you have your kitchen still has a packet dwar
i'm still trying to figure out why everybody has a bunch of those silver ramen flavor packets in their junk drawer. what happened to all the noodles?
Junk drawer is what I call it lol
Exactly. We save all that stuff.
This is true. We have one. Isn't that what drawers are for?
Very important point raised relating to the unifying nature of 'class', it's the system that maintains and propagates the divisions in society, loved the sketch (-:
This was a super skit! Tom Hanks grew up and went to Skyline High School in Oakland,
CA I was 2 years behind him there. He was voted "class cut up" even back in 1974! Oakland
gave us the best ever life lessons. Not to mention RAIDERSSS grin..
Tom Hanks, bringing people together. We can't have too much of Tom.
Eeeew ….he’s one of those island boys….just eew
"Not a damn thing" 😂
Good reaction. You people are funny. Am I allowed to say that?!
You can, my bah-rutha.
We'll let this one slide
That skit is hilarious. ❤😂
And Corey has it right about how much we have in common.
The categories always crack me up. "They out here sayin'" 😂 When Keenan went to shake his hand ..😅😅😅😅
This sketch is probably one of the best moments in SNL.
I so hoped it might be a start to showing each other we aren't different at all.
It took longer for the message to be heard than I would have liked, but it's being heard, and that's really what's important.
Kinda of a shame they went back to the same old slop afterwards, but it was great in the moment.
It’s true. You can listen to Chris Rock, George Lopez, and Jeff Foxworthy and relate to all of their stand up if you were poor. On a serious note, if you solved our differences in race, nationality, religion, etc. There will always be a difference in classism and that scares the shit out of the ruling class. That’s why they peddle fear and division. They don’t want us united over class because they are greatly outnumbered. Anyway, great skit. Also, the ongoing joke with this sketch is that the white people on Black Jeopardy always have the worst answers. Any other character is the same. They switched it up on this and it was the whitest person you can think of. 😂😂😂
that was why Fred Hampton was so "dangerous" to the powers that be - he was reaching out to Black, Hispanic and white groups in Chicago on the issues which should unite the poor and middle classes.
@@kelly9876 Exactly! Well said. Same thing with all our great leaders who were giving power to the people.
Brilliant! Leslie Jones cracks me up. Next up- Black Jeopardy with Chadwick Bozeman as T’Cholla!😂😂😂 Thanks for doing Tom’s! ❤❤❤
Yes- Darryl Hammond was the very saucy Sean Connery on Celebrity Jeopardy. 😂
Will Ferrell is hilarious on “ More Cowbell”. A must watch!
The bland potato salad!
I totally agree! Chadwick’s skit as T’Challa in Black Jeopardy was good. But, the Tom Hanks’ one was the funniest one I have ever seen. It was shockingly funny and thought provoking. It was so to the point. One of the best skits from the series!!! Tom Hanks has always been my favorite actor!!!
Oh, the one with Chadwick Boseman is THE BEST! He was such a talent. I don’t know how he did that without laughing.❤️
Nice little reminder of class solidarity. Very cool.
We have a miscellaneous drawer. Holding various packets, twist ties, fast-food straws and many other items we'll never need, unless we throw it away.
My mom used to call ours the "junk drawer."
Don't throw it away. You may need it some day.
I have lived with multiple cultures, everyone has a misc drawer. It is necessity of life and living.
I actually reach in there for the taco bell fire sauce packets but I'm pretty sure there are some soy sauce packets in there older than me 😂🤣If you need soy sauce after the apocalypse go visit your local hood or trailer park 💁♂
White Canadian here, grew up with not much to our names all up and down British Columbia. We also had “the good chair”, “oven heat”, “car tape”, down/upstairs neighbors hitting the ceiling/stomping the floor cause the only rent I could afford isn’t in the best of neighborhoods, “my mechanic friend” who’ll do near anything for a flat of beer and some smokes, like all of this stuff in the Black Jeopardy sketches is super relatable to me and it makes me laugh my ass off. I’ve had to scrimp, claw, and sacrifice much of myself to crawl out of the poverty line, but let me tell ya, this province man.. this province goes out of its way to render whatever gains I attain mean nearly nothing by the time I get it. It can be depressing, so my mom taught me to look back on it all, and laugh at it. Because it’s all so ridiculous.
And you better believe now that I’ve finally become a homeowner at nearly 40, one of the first things my wife and I agreed on was which one was the “packet drawer” ;)
When I saw this as a white man I recalled the time me and my best friend, also white, realized we were black.😉 We went into a grocery store at 2 in the morning and came out with fried chicken, crystal hot sauce and orange soda. This may seem racist but it's the opposite. Who doesn't like fried chicken, hot sauce and orange soda. We are not black but why is this a racist trope. Not saying that we have any idea what it feels like to be from black ancestors but when you're 20 years old, it's a bit of a wake up call. Love this sketch.
Oh yeah. When Dad’s in the house ain’t nobody sitting in his chair except for him!
This is becoming one of my favorites channels. Awesome reaction as usual. Look forward to your new content gentlemen.
The reason i love this skit is that i grew up in the projects in my town. We were all in the same situation.
As soon as I saw the title I clicked because I've seen this many times and Tom Hanks is amazing in it😅😅😅
The best I've seen in years is a skit called "Close Encounters" with Kate McKinnon. Imagine if Cecil's kids got abducted by aliens. 😂
I don't know what they're called but those little emojis of you guys not one of them looks like any of you😅😅😅

Tom Hanks pulled that off
The people at the top need the people at the bottom to keep fighting; otherwise, we might realize we have a common enemy, and turn on *them*.

I’ve watched this a million times and this was the first time I heard “the sound of the broom 🧹 hitting the ceiling…”
I just moved into an expensive gentrified old apartment and I can’t tiptoe across the livingroom floor from 10pm to 7am without the lady in the studio below me banging on her wall.😫😫😫
Get her some noise cancellation headphones, it is impossible to not make noise when you're the upstairs neighbor. My heart goes out to you.
I could watch this over and over again and it's not easy to do and Tom was so believable😅😅😅😅

my packet drawer is just a baggie in the fridge.
I agree with his assessment that opinions are more often along socio-economic divides than racial. Poor whites have much more in common with poor blacks than they do with wealthy whites. As long as the wealthy keep the hate going and the lower economic groups fighting each other, those socio-economic divides will continue to increase.
There are actually multiple of these and they are all hilarious.
You’re right .. we collectively have a lot in common.. same creator, built the same from inside out. Thanks for doing
I tried to join your FB group several days ago and it shows that my request is still pending. Not sure what went wrong. 🤷♀️
When we focus on the differences we unfortunately forget everything we have in common in this human experience.
okay
My car window, no tape. I did the pieces of cardboard wedged down in, so it could not fall on its own, tryin' to make it look like it was straight. But no. Meanwhile, when I had good windows, I had mo-fos bust in my sh*t during the rain, goin' through my dash and shiz like I got treasure up in there. The one damn window they broke that one time cost more than the f-ing after market stereo with a cassette thing bitch stole! Dayam!
I liked y'all's show. Thanks for being you.
She's Sturdy 😂😂😂
Celebrity jeopardy has many skits and sean Connery always takes the category and says it in a sexual innuendo, catch these men=catch the semen
Car tape!🤣🤣🤣
This never fails to make me laugh. Watching you all laugh your butts off makes me laugh even harder. I adore you men. Thanks for the chuckle. Enjoy the day.
You guys are great. 😂
Take the media out, we would all be friends. Well, most of us anyway.
Invite C.Thomas Howell and make him watch *Soul Man* with you.
The Black Jeopardy with Chadwick Boseman in character as The Black Panther is also hilarious!
In living color jeopardy was would be a good reaction.
Fundamentally we are all pretty much the same. Great reaction to a great skit. Subscribing to you guys.
The SNL skit was funny as hell , and this reaction video just put the icing on the cake!! I look forward too your next video!!
What is: not a damn thing!
At my office a few years ago, someone found an online quiz called How Ghetto Are You? To their great surprise, two of the people who scored the highest were me (a white man from rural WV) and a white woman from rural central PA.
Shout out for saying “it’s all the same shit..”
One of my favorite all time sketches…and I have been watching since 1975…I was a 5 year old that year, have always had sleeping problems, used to sneak when my folks were watching SNL.
Yes/ do Celebrity Jeopardy with Will Ferrell and Norm McDonald. 😂😂😂😂
More SNL: MORE Cowbell;
IN A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER;
JAMES BROWN’s Hot Tub Party
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Life without my 500 mph tape is not worth living. :D
People are all pretty much the same no matter their skin color. We all want and need the same stuff. This might be my favorite SNL skit of all time. Just wonderful. Race aint nothing but a construct anyway. HUMAN race right? 🤷♂️❤️
Love the big chair joke! That's right "You get your young ass up!" Just like" Turn the heat up Grandma's cold!" Meanwhile you're so hot you're dizzy.
But it's the right way act!
Enjoyed this! This just appeared in my feed, so I clicked. Then I saw Corey! HEY COREY!
my ex's dad had the best 'good chair' ever. i used to fall asleep soon as i sat down.
2 great older SNL skits are "Reagan Mastermind" & "Intercepted by Warlords"
I can't beleive they are prejudise against skinny women.......lol
Fenom202 with the Sean Connery cut! That was the viral episode before Tom Hanks.
no divisions here. I grew up as mexican-american in LA. this skit brings us together. let's all stop being so defensive and just LOL.
Ok, the packet drawer thing, what's up with that? I keep packets. My fiancé gets irritated if I don't throw all the packets in the trash the SECOND the meal is over.
You might want to watch Rolls Royce blowout with Randy Quade. Living in Oregon this 1 hit home.1 of my favorite skits.
I grew up a white kid in the 1970s in an all white area. I was in my teens when we moved to a city where there were people different than me. It was not so much about skin color but people who saw the world different, had different ways of thinking, and even different senses of humor. Glad my parents took me out of that boring all white town. Met so many great friends and learned so much about the world. I never learned anything from someone who agrees with me all the time. I see that in the worst kind of politics today.
I think you guy overlooked the best moment. Darnell crosses to shake Doug's hand and Doug backs up; hands in the air. From what my black friends tell me watching this, it's true. They cannot help an old lady without her clutching her purse.
You are dead on about the similarities when it comes to class regardless of race. Of course there are cultural differences but SO many similarities more than differences from what I have experienced. And yeah the Celebrity Jeopardy with Will Ferral and "Sean Connery" always raging on the host and his momma lol.
Black jeopardy with Chadwick boseman if y'all have not seen it
Okay. Even before anything happens .. "You can do with this, or you can do with that!"
I constantly see stuff online that's like "you'll only understand this if you're black" or "you'll only understand this if you're latino." I think people are just looking for shit to feel like they're part of some cool club. Because my white ass grew up with all of the stuff those videos highlight. We have way more in common than we don't.
Hillarious Always trying to divide us. So much more in common. The Good Chair❤️
I've seen this skit a few times and laughed my butt off, but your reactions made a new experience! Thanks guys!
My favorite part of this skit is the negative space joke. None of the contestants picked "I'm gonna pray on this" or "white people".... nah i'll go with 'you better' for $400
Go on and call me out if you think I'm wrong, but to me racism mainly comes from fear and, or, just lack of exposure to other races and cultures. I grew up in a predominately white town in Indiana before moving to KC after 7th grade and I found myself being given a choice between two high schools because they had changed the districts to try and end segregation. I chose Raytown South High School only because I preferred going where the VOTEC school was right next to the high school. I always felt like this must've been difficult for black kids that went to South because the school had a strange admiration for the Confederacy. You could get your class ring from Jostens with a Confederate flag under the stone. I got expelled for challenging my history teacher over pushing the narrative that the Civil War was fought over states rights and that slavery was just one of the issues. It wasn't appreciated that I pointed out that America had never lived up to the words in the Constitution, that all men are created equal. I pointed out that if that were true then there would have never been a need for the Civil Rights movement in the 60's. I can never understand fully the black experience in America, but I know lies when I hear them, and America is really good at lying about how great we are as a nation and pretending racism ended when Obama got elected. It will never end as long as ignorance and fear continue to drive the hatred or we can at the very least have honest discussions about the history of this country and how we can change it going forward. I feel like we took massive steps backwards after 2016, and I just hope we don't repeat that mistake again in November.
Hey guys. Been wondering when someone would do a deep dive and reactions to the Disc Jockeys of the 40’s, 50,s 60’s. They were so famous and they were A PART of music. You guys would be perfect to do a series like that. My generation listened to Wolfman Jack.
An example of racial humour done right.
I can't be the only one who thinks no one else could have pulled that off like Tom Hanks.
We are all more alike than different. My dad sat in the good chair. And always got the first chicken breast! 🐔
The question is, AIN'T BE! DING!
"Uh, Who was Frances Bavier that played the lovable Aunt bea from the Andy Griffith show Darnell?"
Its so damn true, they want to divide people by colour but the only division I have ever witnessed has been based on Financial status and the upbringing it produces. Sure the experiences may differ somewhat, but there is so much more that connects us than divides us. From personal experience I have connected much more with people of many different nations on the same economic level than I have with people of the same colour on a different social level.
Leslie Jones losing it at 6:45 is great. America isn't really racist, it's the economic class and culture you are from.
Actually, the end point made is that America is racist. With all the similarities of economics and culture, the Tom Hanks character was going to fail that last question by saying either white lives matter/blue lives matter/ or the fox get out clause of "all lives matter".
The point should be, if we had more exposure to all people than negative news bubbles like Fox, we could concentrate on improving all economic class.
@@philwill0123 I'd still disagree that this is a racist country. There are racist people sure, but there are racist people of all races, colors and creeds.
Racism was mostly dead until people and media conflated bad police training with racism when a few unarmed black people were killed by police, even though nearly twice as many unarmed white people were killed by police at the same time.
This just shows how uninformed you are. This country still has many laws in place that are racist. People don't understand that racism is about class at it's core.
There are still laws put into place strictly to keep black people from rising up to middle class.
This is why most either do it by sports or music. Education is a huge limiter and so are housing laws and discriminatory employment practices.
And why wouldn't there be more white people killed then black people? This country's black population is only 13%. Even with twice killed that's still more black people killed percentage wise.
But regardless no other country has nearly as much police deaths or incarcerated people percentage wise. So many police deaths is unusual and a result of immunity allowing them to break laws and avoid punishment.
The police target poor people because the are less likely to be able to fight back. And the vast majority of poor people are minority.
That is why racism exists because at its core it's about deciding who or what kind of people have power. Racism is not so simple as I don't like you because you look different. It's about power. Economic power. Financial power. Social power etc.
The haves and the haves nots. The mistake is in thinking the haves will care about you because you are also white and that you too can become part of the 1%.
It bothers you that your country is considered racist but it's the truth. The most decorated unit in the Army was a group made of Japanese Americans. While they served and died for this country their families were imprisoned in interncamps.
The Nazis learned about gas chambers from us and many US senators were actively working with Hitler.
So many civil rights leaders were actively assassinated by the Feds.
Instead of living in denial why don't you look at the truth and real history and decide that you want more from your country?
When I was in school they used to teach that the civil war wasn't about slavery but states rights.
The state right to do what exactly? The state right to own a human that's what the true history was.
@@CorsetGraceOh no. US most definitely has racism.
But different races do share commonality due to their economic situations.
@@Elena-er7zp I agree it has racist individuals, I just don't think it is a racist nation. Racism was almost a forgotten thing in the early 2000s until certain people, who were being ignored, decided to bring it back because their victimhood was being threatened.
Great Video. Hilarious Sketch & also sends a realistic tone, in that, person of diversity share so many commonalities. This sketch allows us to laugh & to learn at the same time. Let me know what you think
11:30 - I had to do that exact same thing on my car window when I was in my early twenties and broke af. Eventually I figured out how to replace the window regulator, but until then there was a bunch of duct tape on my window.
That is a really good point that Olli made. Not all black people are the same, not all white people are the same, but some black folks have things in common with some white folks, and other white folks have things in common with other black folks. It seems like Olli is right that the real divisions in society are on more economic lines and not as many racial ones.
In the end, it's rich peoples way of keeping us divided and fighting amongst ourselves so they can stay in power. They want us to stay distracted by all the things going on in our world that they can use against us.
it's too bad that people have the ability to "get offended"...it's such a useless emotion. Stereotypes are the funniest thing on the planet...it is the flavor of life. favorite part of this skit for me..."car tape"
