Lennon just seems to sing about the crisis the protagonist of this song is in. Mark sounds as if he IS the protagonist. This cover is a real jewel among stones.
Dude you hit the nail on the head. First heard it back in 2001 about 4 in the morning after a heavy night in Macedonia. Just found this song and your comment
I like this - was listening to the tribute CD today while running errands and have always thought this version of Lennon's song is very good - inspirational lyrics, great tune and your video nails it on the head. Thanks...
@pjam07pjam The Working Class Hero John Lennon Tribute cd is available on Amazon. And it's not that expensive at all... it is getting rarer though. I found it for 50p in a bargain bin at an independent record store many years ago!
@MrPekingCat actually, I take it back on the part of Marylin Manson. From listening to his voice upon hearing his cover for the first time, I think he does get what the is song truly about.
Great cover. I wonder sometimes if John Lennon even wrote the song. Perhaps a ghost writer. Imagine too. It's another great song, but you have to be insane to come up with that. You can take three cords, play them in the same pattern and just change the timing and come up with and endless number of songs. I'm not a downer. There's always hope. ML lives. Lennon too.
I love ST and Lennon, Mark's voice is great for this song. It's kindav like Cornell with Imagine on Conan O'brian, not as good as Lennon's but still it feels like the song was made for them.
@TheMetalChefOnline you think Billy Joe or Marylin Manson really know what that song means anyways? The melody and lyrics make for a nice tune that any punk from suburbia can relate to, but are they actually there themselves on the same open ground level state of consciousness? I wonder..
i wonder how could it be stay on the left side in the States. i'm European, for us is different, i don't even know if in the US you have got a left wing as we intend it.
As soon as you're born, they make you feel small By giving you no time instead of it all 'Til the pain is so big you feel nothing at all A working class hero is something to be A working class hero is something to be They hurt you at home and they hit you at school They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool 'Til you're so fucking crazy you can't follow their rules A working class hero is something to be A working class hero is something to be When they've tortured and scared you for 20 odd years Then they expect you to pick a career When you can't really function, you're so full of fear A working class hero is something to be A working class hero is something to be Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV And you think you're so clever and classless and free But you're still fucking peasants as far as I can see A working class hero is something to be A working class hero is something to be There's room at the top they are telling you still But first you must learn how to smile as you kill If you want to be like the folks on the hill A working class hero is something to be A working class hero is something to be If you want to be a hero, well, just follow me If you want to be a hero, well, just follow me For anyone like myself who doesn’t know all the lyrics just yet but wants to jam along
Green Day might not be the best band, but they did a fucking good cover of this. This is also fucking good. If you want a version to bitch about listen to Manson's.
Billie Joe sounds like he's singing some platitude about anti-establishment bullshit, much like his own songs. Lanegan is singing like he just took the bullet Mark Chapman put in John's head.
This video seems to emphasise, more than anything, the efforts of working class men. Men employed very physically. I tend to see this song as one about being the marginalised individual, the thinker, the misfit. Have you ever noticed that the culture of declassing is winning a bit too much? They declass the lower middle.
Lennon just seems to sing about the crisis the protagonist of this song is in. Mark sounds as if he IS the protagonist. This cover is a real jewel among stones.
The lyrics hit harder now than ever.
Solidarity, comrades.
Thanks! It was a first attempt....
I always loved Mark Lanegan's voice and I think he does this song justice
Yes, dude, you"re right. Seems like he carries all the pain of the world over his shoulders
I spend my life hunting for gems like this. Fantastic cover, why haven't I found it before!
I am in awe! January 2012 and this is the first time I hear this cover. Wow! Thank you for sharing.

such a beautiful cover from an overwhelming song of the universe, thank you John forever!...traumhaft schön, magnifique ****
Rest in peace Mark... Thanks for this, my favorite version of this song.
Amazing cover. It sounds as if Lanegan wrote and felt the lyrics himself. You cannot say that very often about a cover.

Thanx for uploading this
@ostritchman101 IMO its about the feeling in it. Lanegan and Lennon both sang it with real passion
❤️
@Wez666 Exactly, There is a drought of bands with soul in they're music. Good ole Mark is still doing his thing, so at least we got that!

Pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty good..........:)

Oh, right! I knew that song
great version, almost as good as the original one
I love ST and Lennon, Mark's voice is great for this song. It's kindav like Cornell with Imagine on Conan O'brian, not as good as Lennon's but still it feels like the song was made for them.
Screaming Trees ... nothing else to say ....

When did they record this? And why is it only now, 2010 that I am hearing it?
A thousand "Likes" :)
It's 2019 when I'm hearing it
As soon as you're born, they make you feel small
By giving you no time instead of it all
'Til the pain is so big you feel nothing at all
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
They hurt you at home and they hit you at school
They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool
'Til you're so fucking crazy you can't follow their rules
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
When they've tortured and scared you for 20 odd years
Then they expect you to pick a career
When you can't really function, you're so full of fear
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV
And you think you're so clever and classless and free
But you're still fucking peasants as far as I can see
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
There's room at the top they are telling you still
But first you must learn how to smile as you kill
If you want to be like the folks on the hill
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
If you want to be a hero, well, just follow me
If you want to be a hero, well, just follow me
For anyone like myself who doesn’t know all the lyrics just yet but wants to jam along
Why is it that this album is nowhere to be found??
try amazon or piratebay
@chronicreptile
Well the song makes all that searching more worthwhile. Mark Lanegan isn't a media whore like most bands around these days.
i love this version, but how is greendays version crappy? i love that version too. in my opinion, its a fucking beautiful song no matter who its by.
@KevCosmic
Green Day might not be the best band, but they did a fucking good cover of this. This is also fucking good. If you want a version to bitch about listen to Manson's.
Manson's stays very true to the original.
Billie Joe sounds like he's singing some platitude about anti-establishment bullshit, much like his own songs. Lanegan is singing like he just took the bullet Mark Chapman put in John's head.

3:05 ... so... COMMUNISM RULZ!
this and the elbow vesion. the ONLY good cover versions of this song. the rest are mediocre in comparison
