Brenden Fraser was one of the most enjoyable guest stars they had on the show. He was so engaging and childlike through some really hard-hitting emotional episodes. 🐸
Michael J Fox was another stand out.
I also really liked Colin Farrell. His episode was a one off. But just the twist to his character made it interesting.
John C. McGinley (the actor who plays Dr. Cox) is SUCH a good actor - he conveys SO MUCH emotion after they found out it's Leukemia (at the 28:24 mark) - that's the "I'm a doctor and I know the stats and what is in store for Ben" look in just a quick glance. Also, he IS ripped - you may not be aware, but he's done A LOT of movies - his first big break was in Platoon and has played buff guys like that before.
He's one of my favorite actors
Have you seen "Intensity"? It's a gem of a movie but never got alot of publicity. I just happened upon it one day. He is very scary in it. I suggest when watching to be wide awake as it is long. It's a book by Dean Koontz and I'm guessing the movies was in 2 parts. If I remember it's 4 hours with intermission at the 2hr mark.
He's also hilarious.
And he was in Wall Street and Office Space, just to nsme a few! 🐸

The fire on the arm can be done fairly easily coating the skin in sodium/calcium chloride and igniting it, a pretty fun experiment we did back in high school chemistry to become the human torch for no reason 😂
There is a vampire film from the 90’s I saw, where the bad guy gets completely set on fire. He’s just casually walking about and continues talking normally to the hero for ages.
I totally believe that there is a liquid solution that burns relatively cool and the skin is protected through the Leidenfrost Effect en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leidenfrost_effect but I doubt that sodium chloride or calcium cloride would be it since the former is just able salt and I have never been successful in igniting salt water. Something actually flammable that has a very low ignition temperature and a heat of evaporation below skin temperature seems likely... I suppose you could be right that a salt like sodium/calcium/potassium chloride could be dissolved in something like alcohol... Just a little research suggests that it likely is a low temp flammable like jellied alcohol applied over a substance like this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fire_retardant_gel
If so, the stunt relies more on the latent heat of the encapsulated water. I think this likely since if you watch the footage from the episode, we see some "drops" of flame falling from Fraser's arm.
My friend used to do it every Halloween and freak people out. He never showed me how to make it, but he never hurt himself so must work very well.
Sarah Chalke is such an incredible actress. The way she just turns on the tragedy like it's nothing. Incredible.
Pimentos are the red thing typically stuffed inside a green olive. They're a type of pepper, and the ones in olives are generally very mild and not very spicy.

I wish you would react to Scrubs in chronological order, from the beginning. Overall story is connected and there is progress along the way. Watching sporadically is not they best way to experience Scrubs. ✌

Good pick up on the lack of bandage and wound. As you've probably already noticed it was supposed to be a subtle hint that the scene that was playing out wasn't real. Scrubs is full of these really subtle things, such as in the episode with Ben and his Camera in the TBC ep.
Fun fact: the actor that plays the janitor originally auditioned for the part of Dr. Cox. He didn’t get it (obviously) but they loved him so much that they made the janitor character just for him! However, because he wasn’t originally a part of the script, for the first season he is meant to be a figment of JD’s imagination (notice how JD is the only one who interacts with him and how surprised he was to see a photo of him)!!
And he never got a script as his improv is funnier than the writers can do

If doctors accidentally remove my appendix I hope they'd at least not charge me for it. Also I think when Ben's arm is on fire that was probably a prop arm. 🐸
nah that's something you can do in adobe after effects in less than 5 minutes.
Neil Peart was an amazing drummer in my opinion. He was the summer for Rush and passed away 2 years ago.
I cried the first time I ever watched this episode and today was the same. Scrubs is 1 of 1 as a comedy show doing serious stuff 🐸

The firey arm was probably done with a professional fire-performer's burn gel. It's a transparent paste that disapates heat before it can reach the skin. Stuntmen use it all the time in movies.
Definitely not CGI, as you can see drips of fire fall away from his arm.

Maybe, but even back then it was pretty easy to composite footage of fire onto existing footage using layering. Any professional could do it with either film or video. It's one of the easiest special effects to be honest. Fire is bright enough, you can just isolate out the darkness and be left with only the flames. Then you position it over the scene in the correct location and ta da!
“How did he get a nail through his hand?” Trust me, accidents happen all too easily on a work site. One day I was using a sawzall with a metal cutting blade to cut between boards that had been nailed together - cutting through the nails. The blade skipped off one nail and the saw went up, but I was still pushing down on it so I pushed it straight down into my boot through my foot. Luckily I let go of the trigger immediately so my foot didn’t get all chewed up.
Yeah shit happens. I cut the palm of my left hand with a sawzall. Another time, shot a college in the arm with a nail gun

Masi Oka, who played the lab tech Franklin, would later go on to have a starring role in the hit show (at one point) Heroes, as time traveller/manipulator Hiro Nakamura. Masi is also a certfied genius, with an IQ of 180, and has a black belt in kendo, making his fight scenes with George Takei all the more impressive.
I get excited every time I see him there!
Plus he used to work at industrial light and magic when it was under Lucas as a vfx artist. He is credited for all of the prequels, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, among others.
🐸 "Hey he's is okay, the bandage is gone"... and noticing the huge box of photos came from nowhere. You caught the clues to the fact it wasn't real. But it's so hard to tell them from real continuity errors and other fantasy scenes.
Knowing what's coming and watching these few episodes has me catching all the small hints.
Noticing how his hand is fine in that one scene shows that that only occured in JDs head.
Pimento is roasted red pepper usually stuffed into olives.
I can tolerate it in olives. My mom likes pimento loaf (bologna with pimento in it). Yuck! She also likes the cheese spread with pimentos in it. Yuck again.
I very much enjoy and appreciate your little "sciency" tidbits during the hard scenes. It's informative and actually adds weight to the scene when it's portraying something that's medically accurate! At least in my opinion.

That Hold On Hope song though is one of (not saying it is, but it’s one of them) my favorites this show has used. It has a lot of amazing song choices. Including the theme song too! Such a brilliant show. Love it all.

Speaking of Muppets, did you know Elmo is in one episode?
IIRC in Hollywood stunt effects, they make this stuff called cold gel that with trained personnel you can easily coat someone in, add a fuel light them on fire for short periods of time without heat transferring to the skin in any damaging fashion.
I think Mythbusters played with this stuff, they coated their whole body in it and did the man on fire stunt. I have vague memories of Adam Savage freezing his ass off while they coated him head to toe in this goo they just pulled out of the freezer.
In this scene they hide the wetness of his arm with the blood stain on his sleeve, in the frame just before it is far lighter in color. You can also see little drips of gel and fuel jumping off of his arm as the burn progresses. I bet just behind the camera they had a crew ready to dash in with fire blankets and ice to extinguish and strip his arm of the gel and make sure no heat has transferred to the skin.

ooh, after the Brendan Fraser ones, u should do season 8 episode 2, not to spoil too much but it goes rly deep into death and dying and how doctors deal with it, it was a rly good episode

a pimento is the little red thing you see in the center of green olives at a bar or in stores. The show is right, they don't really digest and if you eat enough of them, they'll be visible in stool. It was a joke because Eliot had just put her cocktail olive in her mouth.
Please please do the whole series! I am sorry I can't support you on patreon, I am a poor almost entry level office drone. But I am subscribed, and love watching these! You always have the most info and it's super fun and educational. I've seen every episode fo scribs 100 times, but never watched with a doctor who could explain the technical stuff or notice symptoms as they happen on screen!
If and when you need breaks from Scrubs, no one has ever done every episode of House MD either :D

🐸🐸 I'm pretty sure that the arm on fire would probably be his real arm, most likely with rubbing alcohol and water. It'll burn off the mixture, not burning his arm. That'll have to be a lot of it to last that long though!
There is a product called "Zel Gel" made for stunt work that is normally applied to the skin to form a barrier - it has a consistency similar to petroleum jelly and then they can put whatever lighter fluid or whatever on top of that. It's still a dangerous stunt but for a quick scene of just a few seconds it's normally okay.

11:30 After effects and 3 alpha layered flame assets. 2 anchor points and some key frames = boom. That's why the majority of the shot was his arm still. that's the easiest to lay in. Only the 1.5 seconds of motion requires anchoring and keyframes as well as the 2 other flame assets to appear as if the flame is moving. All available in 2005

Bleed - Meshuggah. For all the obvious reasons (Tom Hakke had to relearn his drumming technique) plus, they're my fave metal band and I saw them live in Freo a few years ago, incredibly impressive. Bleed is also about a brain aneurism "thrusts of pain increasingly engaged" (Aneurism was the OG name for the song). Dream Theatre is a contender too though (like metal for the intellectual-dreamers). Hello, fellow metalhead!

For your crazy drums question I would say a song called "the great divorce" by 'nothing more' . There is a UA-cam video of a guy doing it if you search and it's pretty crazy but you seem like you are game for a challenge. Love the videos, keep it up ! :)
As sad as this episode is the hematopathologist bit always gets me. I work as an administrative medical assistant in pathology (for three more months at least, after that I am moving on to orthopedics) and I have a close relationship with most of our pathologists. I say this with so much love but pathologists are weird lol. They are the strangest of the strange and I love them. And our hemato-guy is the most forgetful weirdo out there - but man is he an expert in what he does. But not the least bit scary haha.

Practical effect, there are ethanol-based gels that burn at a very low temp, at to that some water-based gell as isolation directly on the arm and you don't run any real risk of burns.

This episode is so good and it establishes some of the character relationships you've already seen. Ben is first introduced here, and Jill Tracy is the one that died of Rabies later.

Best drumming moment: Song for the Dead by QOTSA, Dave Grohl kicks it up to 11 and it made me fall in love with drummers. Also, fave drummer is Bill Ward from Black Sabbath.
A lot of people mention that Ben's hand isnt bandaged in that one scene, but that was kinda the first clue (at least the first one I noticed) that it wasnt real. 🐸🐸🐸
with the fire, its either a "fire elements" rotoscoped on to the arm or they use the gel and a specialised sleeve that allows you to have fire on your skin.
Scrubs had the uncanny knack of selecting the right song for the moment. I used one of the songs from an episode to create a photo/video montage for my wife's and my anniversary last year.

I would guess the fire was added in post. As of 2010, I know there were a lot of stock effects for scenes like that. Not sure how easy that was when this episode came out, but probably easier than working with real fire for such a simple scene.
This is the perfect reason to do the whole series. This episode wasn’t as impactful because you already knew the ending. I would love to see you do all episodes in order

I was kind of a frequent flyer in one of the surgical departments at a nearby hospital in my 20's (as in, one surgeon opened me up via ventral laperotomy 5 times before I turned 30). Starting with the porter coming to wheel me down to theatre, I'd be asked my name, which would be checked off the wristband and notes, if I knew I was going to theatre; when I got to the pre-op department, same again at handover, with some more detailed questions on why I was there, who my consultant was and so on, repeated in the anaesthetic room.
Mistakes can still happen, though. After one surgery, the line from the morphine pump wasn't properly connected, so instead of analgesia, I was getting a wet elbow. Which is a difficult concept to convey when you're coming round from anaesthetic, and all you're really sure of is that the wound hurts. A lot.

"Hear Me" by Devin Townsend, drums by Samus Paulicelli (66Samus on UA-cam) is one I can think of that you might not have heard.
I'm not a drummer myself, so I can't really judge the difficulty, but I know that Devin specifically hired Samus for this song, because he thought he was the only drummer who could play it.
Awesome drumming: Porcupine Tree - Anesthetize (Live).
You can find it on UA-cam. You won't be disappointed. But I can't agree more that Mike Portnoy is a powerhouse, and his drum parts are (were?) always unique and challenging. I grew up drumming to him, and all the other legends.
Honorable Mention: Danny Carey...any Tool song. But there's a crazy syncopated part he plays in Eulogy. I'm a very good drummer, but damn it if I haven't figured that one out, yet!

8:00 When I had my last surgery (nothing serious, just kidney stones, ureteral splint I think its called in english) the doctor, a nurse and the anaesthetist asked me one after the other which procedure is about to performed on me and on which kidney. I guess that was also to make sure that I got the correct procedure.
Had the exact same thing happen to me when I had an operation two years ago. Also was explicitly asked about my name twice - obviously to prevent mixups like in the episode ;)
