At about 24:40, "I hope you never see me again," you reminded me of a time I went to the emergency room over an abscess. I get navel abscesses all the time, sometimes dental, and they always resolved themselves. My right eye was almost entirely closed and I look like I chipmunked a small lemon into my cheek. He initially wanted some scans done, I told him my medical history, he wrote the prescription, and I missed exactly one day of work. I called the hospital after about 2-3 days, to let him know I appreciated that he listened to me _and_ I could tell he was super drained by the time he got to me. The nurse I talked to said he wouldn't be in for another week. Dude was such a legend.
Mike and Ike's is an American candy. Pretty much caramelized high fructose corn syrup in candies with 5 fruit flavors/colors. They're pretty delicious. Can be found for sale at grocery stores and movie theaters
I've had two different experiences as a vegan in hospitals: 1) amazing food. Like... better than what I would make at home sometimes. (sadly the rest of the clinic was meh) and the chef actually told us to tell him any extras he should watch out for. 2) rice with tomatosauce. 6/7 days a week. Complained like 10x. Nothing. Also the rice was clumped together and dry... and what was worse... so was the tomatosauce. so yeah... It depends on the hospital!
When I had a few months stay in a hospital once I could walk I would go to the cafeteria almost every evening to eat. The food there wasn't very good but it was way better than what they brought around but I'm a fussy eater so that would explain it. I'd usually just get sandwiches, though breakfast was my favuorite, getting weetabix and toast in the morning was always worth looking forward to.
A really fun video/series would be for you to play The Sims Doctor career (need The Sims 4 and Get to Work DLC) and to see how fast you can get from level 1 of the career to level 10.
I've literally just come out of hospital. Diagnosed with crohns, diverticulitis and a bowel perf. The food they gave me were not even close to the diet I was supposed to receive. Ended up causing a massive row with the gastrodoctors, dieticians vs the catering staff was quite an experience.
In our hospital, if a patient asks for something, they can get it. We've had diabetics that have asked for chocolate cake and tea full of sugar, of course it sends their blood sugar through the roof. Then we need to deal with that,it's very irritating.
That’s one of my concerns about ending up in a hospital. I’ve been on a special diet for over half my life. Had to see a gastroenterologist for the first time at age 10.
@@heathergarnham9555 that's it, but the stupid thing was they put my diet on the catering board. But they still ignored it os I ended up getting loads of fresh veg and fried foods. It got to the point where one of the gi doctors was going to the shop to get food for me boiled rice, with grilled chicken and Soups. Something needs to be done in hospitals whether removal or preset menus and introduction of meetings between catering staff and specialists to ensure proper nutrition.
I can't prove it, obviously, but I had on and off dental issues for a few years and some of my worst infections occurred after ingesting candy (something I did very infrequently) bacteria do like their sugar...
My longest stay at a hospital was 22 days being treated for viral meningoencephalitis. I did get 3 meals a day and as many tea and biscuits I wanted (this was in Scotland after all), and while I am a bit to a lot food cautious I can't really say that the food there was bad because it was really good. Not the stereotypical bad hospital food you always hear about.
Your pen movie has a potential connection to this episode - Hospital Pen: Covid Edition. The exact same idea you had but with the same premise from this episode of visible transmissibility
Food: Depends on the hospital. When I was at MD anderson and Methodist, there were menus, suited to every type of surgery, with great food. When I did my residency in South Carolina, they were growing some of their own vegetables and herbs, and had an actual chef overseeing the food line in the cafeteria. It was crazy excellent. When I did med student rotations at Coney Island, they were accidentally handing out cruddy ham sandwiches to the Jews. Oh the whole green infection spread is weird. I didn't experience this in med school but as part of my mom's nursing training in the extreme wayback, they were shown an educational video (in an OR) of how a contamination then spreads over everything. I think they used the color red, but still, weird.
I don't know about foreign hospitals, but here in the US there's a statistically high probability of a patient being released with clinical malnutrition after an extended hospital stay. US hospital food is notoriously awful, and nutritionally empty.
The comments about pens going missing made me laugh so hard. When I worked for a specialist in Sydney as his Admin Assistant. Every time he would come out of his consulting room he would take a pen from our desk to use for the billing slip and then pocket the pen and go back in, despite still having about ten pens in his pockets. He would then leave his lab coat in the room at the end of the day and we would take out huge handfuls of pens then redistribute them through the practice and the cycle would begin again the next day. When I went back to a GP practice (that I eventually managed for a few years before leaving) I became really aware of the way the doctors and nurses would come out with a pen in their pockets (clearly visible) and then use pens from the front desk and take them back to their rooms. Highlighters too. Most of the time we would find them again later and redistribute them but I still had to order so many pens to replace the ones that just got taken home because they wouldn't pay attention to what was in their pockets before they left for the day. Even keys to the basement would go home with one of the doctors. LOL I imagine it is the same at the hospitals.
IDK how things are in Austrailia, but I've been stuck in a hospital in the USA north of Boston for the past week and yeah, the food is actually decent. They gave a menu, and you call down to the kitchen and order based on what your doctor said your restrictions are. They have a big variety to fit every dietary need... except mine apparently, lol. I've eaten pretty much the same thing for the past 2 days because I have to be low fiber (intestinal surgery) and yeah, that restricts me to mostly bread products. I stare enviously at the entree options and the salads, lol. But even when I was on liquids, they had a good variety of broths, juices and flavored ices. It's been almost a week and not bored of the food yet, which is great for those in and out!
In Australia we have a private system and a government run system. As a rule the food in the private hospitals is better but the patient/insurance pays for the privilege. In my recent experience the food in the public system is similar standard to economy airline food
Fun fact, non-medical: that raven is African. It's illegal to own a native, migratory species of bird in the US. You can tell from the white patch on its back. They probably leased it from a zoo who used the show's footage for promo material. It costs several thousand dollars to actually buy one. EDIT: Yes, and the white armpits. I paused the video instantly when I saw the back patch and forgot it was such a fixture of the episode.
Hi Dr Syl! NO! Dr. Acula is never a finished production but it is a running joke every so often. HOWEVER JD’s actor Zach Braff and Turks actor Donald Faison both fantasize about making it a completed production
I'm not going to say I'm happy we have to deal with COVID, but one of the things that I've noticed is that people are taking infections and cleanliness much more seriously, now. Obviously it isn't perfect as COVID is still a thing, but even in myself, I've noticed people recognizing that they should wash their hands more, as well as notice when you wear masks and keep away from people who even just have colds. I know a lot of jobs that used to be like "you should come to work unless you're dying" are also more likely to tell you to stay home. Things aren't perfect, and your mileage may vary depending on where you are, but it's nice to think people are taking infections a little more seriously.
Dr. Acula never gets published iirc, but we do get to see some scenes in the S5 ep "My urologist". 🧛♂️

I would definitely watch a lost pen film. I work in an animal hospital, and I lose pens all the time. I accidentally steal then too 😂
I don't know about foreign hospitals, but here in the US there's a statistically high probability of a patient being released with clinical malnutrition after an extended hospital stay. US hospital food is notoriously awful, and nutritionally empty.
This episode reminds me of my dad passing away. He had a second stroke and while in the hospital, contracted MRSA which killed him. :-(
The comments about pens going missing made me laugh so hard.
Mike n Ike is a candy in the US. Its kind of a pill shape but not really enough to confuse it as one
Hi, doctor Syl, I love your voice ❤ so cute
I’d watch the ‘Life of Pen’ short film :)
"Negligence"? In Cabbage's case, it's straight up obliviousness.
handling the iv….NO GLOVES OR CLEANING THE PORTS!!!!
Thanks to this video I'm now imagining the opening to Lord of War but with a pen instead of a bullet.
there is a deathcore band called Dr. Acula.
their first song wasn't bad, but it probably only got the attention due to the band's name.
To my knowledge Dr Acula never got finished unfortunately . :/
there was amateur video of dr. acula with him and turk 🙂
I wonder what Syl woukd think of Ed from season 8 of Scrubs
He never publishes Dr. Acula but the do show a bit of a scene that he filmed once.
Mike n ike is an American candy that looks like little tubes
Yes, in one episode we can actually see a scene from "Dr. acula"
you know, for a very cranky dude like Kareem, he sure does appear in a lot of comedy shows. 😁
No, JD never published Dr. Acula; the Janitor Incinerated his screenplay
Hi Dr Syl!
NO! Dr. Acula is never a finished production but it is a running joke every so often.
HOWEVER
JD’s actor Zach Braff and Turks actor Donald Faison both fantasize about making it a completed production
Haha I have my own unfinished fantasy production..
i dont think he ever publishes Dr Acula, but i know he films some of it at one point
