    I am kicking around the idea of a diesel conversion too. I am considering doing it to my Cox Queen Bee for one of my smaller planes. I like these videos.

    I saw your finder bounce.lol. As long as it doesn't catch you,A pound of flesh is required as sacrifice for the hobby. I learned on Vintage race snowmobiles to replace all the old fuel lines with clear lines and watch for bubbles during tuning. I almost melted a piston on an old Air cooled Twister 440 because it had an air leak on one of the carb lines. An old racer told me a dark fuel line is never a good thing. I also learned it on oil injected engines. Air in the oil line is instant death for an engine.

    Black tinted exhaust oil residue means the oil is being partly burnt due to lean needle settings and very normal with model diesel operation..Its when that oil is like black paint that there is a serious problem lurking inside the engine.

      I still have bits of bark off my hands from little slip ups like that... Just this weekend gone actually. :) Great video too btw. I am in the process of doing up/rebuilding a little Magnum GP15 an turning it into a diesel. I hoping to finish machining the cylinder and piston in the next month or so.

    A few years ago a friend of mine did a diesel conversion on a. 46 size engine.
    I remember that his exhaust was black.
    After about 20 hours of run time the connecting rod failed. If I remember correctly he was using a 12x8 prop. May have been too much load for that engine.
    Good luck, I look forward to your next video.

      That is not a "may" it is a "sure" haha big prop for test engine... Honestly due to high compression I wouldn't go bigger than 11x7

      Well also... It may have been an engine problem. I've ran 14x6 on my 40la hahha

    Some my last run with this engine as a glow produced a top RPM of 8760 RPM with an 11x6 prop.
    This run shows 8460 RPM with a 12x6 prop.

    If your fuel contains up to 2 percent Iso Propyl Nitrate combustion will be more stable so you will get a smoother run and improved throttle response.

    Back in the mid sixties I was running a super tiger 2.5cc disc valve diesel in RC combat. From memory I would say you were under compressed. I think I used to compress up until max rev was achieved and then started to slow down, then back off the compression till the sweet spot was found. Hope that helps. I think this was the engine. i.pinimg.com/originals/87/d6/e4/87d6e40a763d3727358eba128d22e2f1.jpg

    As a diesel driver black exhaust just means excess fuel that isn't being burned when you really get down to it. Not sure if it applies for a tiny "nitro" engine. This is super cool though

    • @glyndowning3076

      These engines dont run on diesel, their fuel is a kerosene base with oil for lube and ether as the igniter. Yes, they are compression ignition engines but the term diesel is a bit misleading.

    • @dmrcflyr2
      @dmrcflyr2  7 років тому

      That is what I read in an RCGroups post, but this engine seems to be running well and it has pretty dark exhaust.

    • @bruceparr1678
      @bruceparr1678 3 роки тому

      @@dmrcflyr2 I think the black exhaust is too low a compression which causes late ignition and incomplete combustion. I always overcompressed the engine until it started to slow then backed off to the sweet spot.

    • @glyndowning3076
      @glyndowning3076 3 роки тому +3

      Yes! The mistake most newbies to diesels make is to crank up the compression from cold. Dont!! Start the motor under compressed - that 'burp burp' sound, then leave it to warm up. Diesels have to reach running temperature to be at their most efficient, so let it run a few moments then slowly lean out the fuel, shen the revs drop or it sounds like it is going to cut, open the needle half turn whilst slowly increasing the compression. You have to learn to balance the one with the other. It takes a while but you get there in the end, and remember, the most important part of the whole operation is your ears. Learn to listen, that is most important. And one more thing, forget everything you think you know about glow engines. These are a completely different ball game.

      Too much fuel. Full size diesel engines smoke heavily with too much fuel, but they get all the air they can ingest and the fuel is regulated by injection. This is a fuel/air mixture controlled by throttle. I would lean until the black ALMOST goes away because you still need the lube.

  • @vincentpremel4817

    Please David, don't use electric starter with a diesel. You can easily bend the conrod !

    • @dmrcflyr2
      @dmrcflyr2  7 років тому +2

      Only if the engine is hydrolocked. I have a bad shoulder and can't always keep flipping for that long.

    • @vincentpremel4817
      @vincentpremel4817 7 років тому +2

      David McIntire Sorry for your shoulder. Hydrolock is very easy to achieve with diesel... For starting diesel engine I usually increase the compression when cold, the engine heat up. Then I decrease compression to use better the flywheel effect.

    • @dmrcflyr2
      @dmrcflyr2  7 років тому +1

      No worries. Watch the video I just posted about setting the compression ratio. That will show why my shoulder was bothering me. Shot the same day.

    I'm ignorant of model diesel motors so my questions my seem dumb. but what is the advantages of converting to diesel and how do you shut them down? In line fuel shutoff? I'm all for modifying and changing things up. Just curious at what the difference between glow and diesel performance.

    • @dmrcflyr2
      @dmrcflyr2  7 років тому

      Well I am pretty ignorant also but I think I can answer your questions. I guess the main advantages of diesel are as follows:
      1. No glow plugs to burn out and replace.
      2. No ignitor battery to charge.
      3. Ability to swing a larger prop than you would with glow and thus generate more thrust.
      4. Better fuel economy also.
      As far as shutting them down, the same way as a glow. Pinch or pull the fuel line, or let it run out. Much more can be learned about diesels at the Davis Diesel website and many RC forums.

    • @ghorn4968
      @ghorn4968 7 років тому

      David McIntire There are several advantages then, especially turning a larger prop. Very interesting. The motor sounds like it runs good. Keep up the videos, very informative.

    • @vincentpremel4817
      @vincentpremel4817 7 років тому +2

      Guy Horner 4. Better fuel economy. You can easily use a half capacity tank.

      is it possible to mix gasoline and diesel?

    • @NewHampshireJack
      @NewHampshireJack 3 роки тому

      @@dmrcflyr2 Greeting from the Republic of the Philippine Islands. I have not looked at these cool little engines since my childhood. An adult friend was an advance model builder and also a WW2 pilot who was into building and flying ultralight aircraft. He had a model diesel that he would occasionally run up. Those days hooked me on part of my future career path. Enough of my history.. Diesels, without exhaust treatment are considered "dirty" because of the particulates they generate. They can actually be much cleaner and more environmentally friendly than their gasoline counterparts. Two things you need to keep in mind with your small hobby engines: 1. Diesels are a heat engine. The compression and heat is what ignites the fuel. Your aluminium alloy engine sheds a lot of heat fast compared to a diesel truck engine witch is mostly cast iron. That loss of heat will lower combustion efficiency. 2. Diesels have very high pressure fuel injection systems. The finer the fuel droplets, the better (and cleaner) the combustion process. You are running a two cycle diesel with a carburetor. The exhaust byproduct on your fingers is just about what you may always expect. Some tweaking and adjusting may improve things a little but it is what it is. Have fun and enjoy.

    Jesus, sorry I spoke. Four year old video or not, you don't need a starter for a diesel, and regarding your comment that it's a glow designed for an electric starter, no it's not a glow, not any more, you converted it. And no engine is 'designed' for electric starters. That's just a last resort. But hey, what do I know, I'm just a 72 year old who knows a bit about engines!

      The funny thing is that I have NEVER wrecked in engine starting it like that, nor did I ask for your advice regardless of you age and experience. That is the problem with many people, they cannot help themselves when it comes offering unwanted advice. Age, experience, intention mean nothing. If advice is not asked for then it should not be given. A bit of self control should always be exercised. What I do on my channel has no impact on your life whatsoever. And such, your unwanted advice has no impact on me or my life. That is as it should be. These videos are for entertainment purposes only. I never stated that this was an instructional video and that others must follow these guidelines, so again, no impact to you at all. Have a fine day.
