PAW 149 in flight

- My modified Brodak 'Jr. Lightning Streak' powered by a PAW 1.49BR (single ball bearing) diesel. Fuel is Coopers (30% ether); prop is a 7x4 Tornado. I just put this back in service after a long storage period. I stopped after the vertical 8's as I was not sure how much fuel I had remaining. On the last flight, I attempted the entire pattern and had to bail out of the hourglass when the engine sputtered.
A very enjoyable demo. The PAW certainly runs sweetly. I could not afford one at a kid in the 60s. Bought a 2.5 BR version in 1980. It's never been run. Have just spent a little time reviewing availability of the ingredients for the diesel fuel. I've only just realised that PAW are still trading. It's maybe time to get my grandchildren into control line flying wing combat... At least they would have to hug each other instead of fighting :-)
Diethyl Ether is extremely hard to find in the US. I think there are a couple of fuel companies in the UK that still blend model diesel fuel. I don't know what the team race folks do, but most of us here use John Deere starting fluid. Kerosene and castor oil are fairly easy to obtain and cetane booter can be purchased at truck stops.
BEAUTIFUL model... BEAUTIFUL flying 👍👍👍
So nice to look and hear an old diesel engine at work 💖
Thanks so very much for sharing this with us fans of CL models!
Here's my PAW .19BR powered Ringmaster:

I'm just coming back into control line flying after years of RC. I still have my PAW 19 that I bought when I was 15 years old; I am now 61. I have bought a George Aldrich "Peacemaker"; a plane a used to fly as a kid - and I am really looking forward to it. Nice bit of flying there Fred; great looking model as well.
Dave, check out my latest posting of my PAW .19BR powered Ringmaster ua-cam.com/video/egO-So_F8bY/v-deo.html
Вспомнил наше детство золотое -эпоху кордовых авиамоделей ,когда ещё не было RC-моделей !👽👍
Bloody nice plane mate & that diesel magic great flying 👍🙂
Many thanks Fred. I live in Africa and I forget you guys have winter hibernation seasons. Good luck for the Summer. Keep well.
Regards
Woody.
Nice model. Nice flying. Nothing like direct control, like being in the cockpit!
There is a legend that the owner shares the plan of this model.
It is a Brodak Jr Lightning Streak with reshaped fuselage, stab and wing tips
@frederickkrueger783 Raxmat
That's a great looking little stunter. I've just got a new PAW 1.5 TBR, still deciding what plane to build for it. Will be for the boy to learn stunt on. Nice flying by the way.
Very high confidence level flying over concrete. I was always afraid I would crash and destroy and engine not to mention the whole plane.
That's one nice looking plane and even nicer flying, great job.
With the exception to the cowling on the inside, the Brodak remains me of Carl Goldberg's Wittman Buster, a plane I build back in the earl 70s.
Nice flying, love the diesel.
Oh my!!! A CL plane with a diesel engine !!! Feels like I am 14 years old again ! :D
Wow flicking it with bare fingers!!! Now thats experience. Great to see these Macclesfield born engines all over the world.
Wow.. That's a madly powerful 1.49 diesel. Wish I'd had something that strong when I started flying C/L in 1953. Our 1.5cc engines then were barely able to get off the ground. Great stuff - I do prefer "Non Profile" models though. Thanks for the effort..!
The PAW 1.49Br is quite a potent little engine. That airplane was based on a plane designed for a 2.5cc glow. Unfortunately, we seem to have developed a love of profiles here in the U.S. (simplicity I guess). I have a PAW .8cc powered full-fuse stunter of my own design. The engine is not cowled however (fuse stopped at the firewall), but I thought I could form a cowl from aluminum. I fly mostly glows, but get the 'diesel bug' frequently'. Check out my PAW .19 powered Ringmaster (sorry another profile!):

Thanks for this Fred. Adrian from Cheshire, England, not far from PAW factory!
Nice! You even start it by hand, as they should be, well done.
Why ?
Nice video, great looking model too.
Hermoso ,modelo y motor un lujo Saludos desde Argentina!!!
Gracias
Yes nice model ya have there mate great flight too
Thank you. I haven’t flown that model in a while. It has some hanger rash. It is a nice flying model and the engine is sweet. This Summer I was having issues with my diesel fuel. Pre-mixed diesel fuel is unavailable in the US, so I mix my own using JD starting fluid (80% ether). It worked in previous years. I’ll try a fresh mix next Summer. Again, thanks for the comments.
@@frederickkrueger783 No worries mate hope she runs again , sure like here in Ireland can only get nitro , no chance of diesel mix here good flights 🤙
@@homienat3374 I'm in Australia, but I believe you can get "Model Technics D1000" diesel fuel in the UK.
@@dingalarmg'day mate, im a ozzie living in Ireland for near 20 years thanks for tip ,but im not sure if it can be sent from England to here but will look into this, thanks
@@homienat3374 G'day! 🙂 No worries. Good luck!
What a beautiful plane!!!
Good looking plane and sweet motor.
That motor kicks ass
I worked with Gig in the 1950's-60's and made the first of the 1.49's, then the 2.50 and experimented with the 19 (3.25) - l still have the first of the 2.50s and 19s, makes them 60 years old, l also have one of the early scherle ported 2.50 l flew A And 1/2 combat - the early 1.49s suffered frequent broken conrods - my engines seriously modified turning a 7x6 nylon prop could over rev - l still have a lot of motors, mainly diesels
Thank you for the feedback and history. Here's another of my videos with a PAW.19Br:

Wow, that was great! Thanks for sharing that.
C/l with diesels is a must for me, the sounds like music...
Thank you very much sir.
Beautiful Thanks for share it !!!
Super ! vraiment sympa ce modèle !
Молодец.
Спасибо

I've had a lot of paw motors in my time, great to use , but damn hard start in very cold weather. 🙄
I had a 2.5 and it started easily, I found the 1.5 could be a bit temperamental. Very powerful engines, I loved them.
Very nice!
Lines length / thickness used please ? Excellent video.
Very nice setting, slightly under compressed so it doesn't overheat in maneuvers.

Nice plane.
I think that model aeroplane moves faster than an A380!
What length / thickness lines are you flying this model with ? I would guess: .012" thickness and around 52' feet ? Also, have you tried to put an 8x4 prop on that engine ?
Why ?
Hi Fred...what a lovely plane. I have a brand new PAW 1.49 which is looking for a plane. I had an idea to take a jr flite streak wing and create my own fuselage tips stabiliser and fin much like what you have done here looking at the other comments. Quick question. ..what is the tail moment roughly from wing trailing edge to elevator hinge line roughly on your model if you don't mind me asking?
I also love your silkspan and dope finish. Great job man. Well done!!
Thanks!. Unfortunately the plane is currently in storage in my garage attic. Looking at a scan of the plans with my sketches on fuse, I believe I used the stock fuse material and added a turtle deck and changed the vertical fin shape. The elevator LE to the wing TE (not the fixed flap) is approx. 8.5". Hope that helps. Good luck with yours. Check out my PAW .19 powered Ringmaster S-1. ua-cam.com/video/egO-So_F8bY/v-deo.html
very nice, that paw really screams, is it a .15 size ?
.09 single ball-beary
Cool Plane and Great Flying! Those PAW Diesels really run nice. Also, can you post some video of how you made your Launch Stooge?
Make it your self basically 1 litre kerosene, 1 litre ether, 1 litre castor oil (30 weight) + 20ml Amyl nitrate - in competitions increase kero, reduce oil - experiment - fuels are atmospheric temperature sensitive
@@keithralfs5190 what are the mixing ratio's per ingredient?
@@GuitarGuys7299 that is the initial ratio, start with a litre of each, then adjust, increasing Kero with give more power, reducing oil will reduce oily exhaust, better quality oil will allow less oil and more kero - Ether is for starting - octane improver can be used instead of Amyl nitrate approx 2-3%
Ringmaster wing similarity....
Could you please tell me what covering you have used on the wings , I am building a built up model at the moment and would like to achieve that look , I am in the UK
I used silkspan and clear dope.
I have a 2cc RISE Diesel engine made in Detroit ??????need fuel???????????????
Hi mister. Pleas help me setting ASP 25 RC.. Whit my twistr.. My ASP and Master airskrew 9/4 and wett needle setting runnig 14000rpm.. I am flying engine and originál stock RC karburátor... Lap time 4,6
Change prop to a 10x4. Richen the mixture slightly to a rich 2-cycle or fast 4-cycle run. If that doesn't work, set the R/C carburetor at about 2/3 throttle. Twisters usually like to fly around 5.2 sec/lap on 60 foot lines.
Avezado Piloto!!!!!!?
Props 10/4apc or Mas? Thank you very much
Either. I prefer the APC.
Why ?
We're can I get the diesel fuel for it
Make it yourself :- 1litre Kerosene, 1litre Ether, 1 litre lubricating oil (castor, mineral) about 30 weight, 2-3% Amyl nitrate to stabilise combustion (octane booster will have similar effect) experiment increasing kero for more power, reduce oil to cleanup exhaust - l did not experiment with synthetic oils, however could make a dramatic improvement lubrication,
It's a 1948 can eny1 help me
Hello! Tell me please, how long is the cord on the aircraft model with the PAW 149 engine and the weight of the model. Thank you.
Line length is approximately 16meters. Sorry, I cannot check the weight as the model is in storage in my garage attic at the moment.
Thanks, you can tell what wing profile and swing is applied on this model, I want to make a similar model on the MK-17 engine.
This is a constant chord wing of 17.5cm. The flaps are non-movable. The wing span is approximately 80cm. The airplane was built from a Brodak 'Jr. Lightning Streak' kit. I modified the fuselage profile, the wing tips, the stabilizer shape and increased the elevator area. I would send you photo scans of the plans, but I cannot post them here.
Why you gotta make Profile Models, ay...? They are cheap and they look cheap, however well they fly.
I was enjoying you,r vid untill i saw you control it with a line i,m sorry each to thier own but control line flying makes me want to throw up i hate it sorry nice plane and motor but get rid of the control line l
bernie powell If you get rid of the lines how are you going to control it. Some people like CL.
bernie powell Line control is a lot harder!
Bernie, don't knock it if you haven't tried it..! There was a time that this was all we had, and another time when we didn't even have this...! It's a great hands-on experience, lot more like proper flying than you might think.
