I see two issues with this... Thermal mass of the wood may radiate more heat as it gets bombarded by the heat pump's output, which might make it less efficient. You'll want to make sure debris doesn't gather around it too, that could be a fire hazard. Second issue... If the thing needs servicing, many repairs will require access to the whole unit. I hope this screening can lift off or pull away from the unit. If it can, it should be okay.
Yes. I agree about your concerns and I will check pin it once I fire up the AC. Also, it will slide away, if it does cause issues I will remove and use the screen to hide my water barrels.
