To be honest, I actually have a similar theory for RB, but I would put Beckham there instead. Gerrard is far too complete to be wasted at RB. However, in the modern game, Beckham could definitely play the "Trent" role he was referring to, and probably do it better than Trent.

I see your point in putting that amazingly passer and cross-bound midfielder into a situation where he can do that nearly all game long, but how can you say he'd do it better than Trent? You need resistance, speed, anticipation, marking and 3 sets of lungs to go with that kind of RB. No way, just no way, but hey that's your opinion.

Reckon Trent, Beckham and even Jordan Henderson are more or less the same player interpreted by different eras of the PL. Henderson being the one somewhat caught between two positions, being «too late» to be a classic whip-it-in winger and too early to be Trent. In the end he had a tough time before eventually becoming a mainstay in a weak Liverpool side that eventually grew to be a top CL winning side

Rooney is an interesting. Rooney has had a wonderful career where he has won a lot. Although, a generous mark would be 7/10 for fulfilling his potential. Rooney seemed to peak at his beginning never got better over the course of his career, arguably 2009 to 2012 was his most productive when both Ronaldo and Tevez were out of the picture. I really think you had to have been watching United back in the 90s to really appreciate him. There is no one with the charisma he had playing today. He could play beautifully. He scored loads of goals and he was just damn good fun to watch because you never knew what he was going to do. I honestly couldn't watch United play for at least a season after he left. I missed the rise of the class of 92 because I thought 'what's the point?' Without Cantona, the magic was gone. His goal against Sunderland is still the most beautiful goal I've ever seen.

Chelsea won three PL titles in the 00s. Fergie's United won 6, and lost two of those missing titles by a single point. Despite this, no one picked Scholes, Rooney, Giggs, Ronaldo etc. so it's not about the title winners as such.

@@jackfoulkes3075 The only mythology here is this idea that Gerrard could do what Scholes did best with anywhere close to the consistency. Barring possibly Pirlo, who never played in this league, I've never seen a player able to make the perfect pass with such regularity. It was unthinkable how often his pass not only sliced open the opponent, but more how it was almost always right on the money in terms of perfect weight, perfect position for maximum advantage and how he didn't need too much space to pull it off. Decision making was also top. In a technical sense, he was the very best this league has seen in terms of passing the football. It's a massive exaggeration to suggest Gerrard had anywhere near the same consistent level of vision or the execution in his passing, he had a killer cross but that's a very different skillset. Gerrard had his own qualities that Scholes didn't have, of course, but let's not pretend Gerrard came anywhere close to Paul Scholes' best attributes.
As for the Zidane comments, there's no shortage of top players paying homage to Paul Scholes either. I remember listening to John Terry being able to sit there and openly saying that Scholesy could do things that he'd never seen other players do. Ronaldinho, Rooney, Zidane himself, Henry, Xavi, etc. all have said things along the same lines. He was among the most technically gifted footballers ever to play in this league, if not the most.
